My wife at the time (divorced) used to send me to Vegas whenever she wanted some extra spending money in the post-Party Poker days. 10/20-20/40 at the Mirage were good for $1k-2k/night. It was so much fun and very easy.

I am in town for SFIG conference 2/24-2/27 at the Aria, so leave some money at the tables for me. Also, if you see dudes with dress shirts, no tie, blue sport coats those days, they likely have deep pockets and don't know too much about poker.

Looking forward to reading your trip report, Riverman. Also, I really enjoy your writing style. If you ever want to talk about the old days of online poker, just let me know. I starting gambling on the internet in September of 1996, and started playing online poker in September/October of 1998 (right after rounders came out). I have some very interesting stories, but that is for another thread. Good luck man.

In fact, for a long time, they didn't offer any game over 15-30 limit. And if you had any idea how to play limit holdem, these games were a license to print money.
Boy was this ever true. I wish I had the sense back then to realize what was happening and what I had. I was 4 tabling the 10/20 limit and making 3k a week on the side of my full time job. With neteller getting cash outs was EASY, usually back in my bank account within 24 hours. I remember bringing my dad and his family out to Vegas to party for a week, all on my dime. The good old days.

Now when I play I sit around a table trying to book a small profit. Times have changed.

The book was, "Positively Fifth Street: Murderers, Cheetahs, and Binion's World Series of Poker", by James McManus, great read. From what I understand in real life the guy was a real prick, you can see some Youtube clips of him at a WSOP FT for a limit event in the early 2000s and he seems like a jerk.

He hit the FT of the WSOP ME in 2001 the year before Moneymaker, his book I think really helped the 2002 boom. It looks like $20K event that OP references was from 2004 and I guess his notoriety from the book is why he got that buyin from the B.

I have found myself having these same feelings a lot lately. I'm not sure if it's me getting older or not playing as much as I used, or a combo of the two. My trip last month was by far the biggest let down I've had on a Vegas trip. Not due to losing money, but being less engaged than I was at one time. I'm hoping my annual guys trip in March will bring some life back, but we will see.

On a lighter note, I am looking forward to your TR. I hope the trip bring back old feelings for you. GL.

I don't mean to correct you but I believe the boom was in 2003.

Haha yes now I’m uncertain if the book was from the 2001 or 2002 WSOP.

Thread is generating some serious nostalgia.

I first started playing in casinos at the Taj. Yes, the Trump Taj Mahal in Atlantic City. Which was, without a doubt, the single most disgusting poker room I've ever set foot in. First of all, the chips had never been switched out since the place opened in the 80s. If you did the chip shuffle, you instantly had filth under your fingernails. The tables hadn't been resurfaced either. Or the chairs. Or the carpet. I **** you not, I once had a player at the Taj piss himself at the table. Dealer acted like it happened every day: "FLOOR...the 1 seat pissed himself."

Luckily for, well, everyone that played poker in Atlantic City, the Borgata eventually opened. Perfectly timed for the boom and very well run (they poached everyone decent from the Taj). After having some success in the 10-20 and 20-40 limit games, I eventually scratched together enough money to play the "big game," a 5-10 pot limit holdem game that ran every Friday - Sunday. And what a lineup it was.

Rocco, an old Italian nit who, in the 3 years I played in the game, never showed down a hand worse than QQ
Nicky D, an older guy with an eye patch who looked like he'd done about 30 years of hard drugs before getting sober. Just a miserable dude, constantly berated dealers and earned several suspensions from the room, but a good, solid player
Jason V, a fantastic pro and super nice guy who became a friend
Gil, a dentist from Baltimore; terrible player, amazing guy
Pete, a degenerate blackjack player with more money than sense; hilariously, he always had a seat locked up in the game no matter how long he was gone. He would often take 4+ hour breaks for blackjack and god knows what else (he loved weed), yet he magically never got picked up
Bernie, a scumbag NY rich guy who was 70+ but would bring down 20 year old "companions;" absolutely atrocious player - no idea where his money came from
Elmo, a local nit who one day randomly showed up with a face mask after being beaten to a pulp (never asked or was told how or why)
"G," a NY accountant who quit to be a pro poker player but was terrible at poker

...and many, many others.

A few times, Roger King came and played, he of "King World,' the Wheel of Fortune distributor. Roger loved (at least) three things: poker, cocaine and women. I remember the aforementioned Jason V tanking for 5+ minutes with 99 on a KKQJ9 board for a $20k all in; he thought was ahead, but had put all his cash on the table to play against Roger's infinity stack and therefore didn't have enough cash for a rebuy (and knew his seat would be gone if he had to go get money). Poor planning you could argue. But he called and was good.

As the poker boom happened, the 5-10 game slowly became 10-25, then 25-50. Far too rich for me. I still played the smaller game, but it just wasn't the same. I realized that, weird as it was, what I had really come to love about the pot limit game was those other guys. Having met me only in the poker room, they let me crash at their houses and borrow money. One invited me to his country club for a round of golf. I made more, and better friends in that 5-10 pot limit game than I did at college the same year. I often wonder what happened to all of them - I was told Nicky D died several years ago; the guy was a complete prick, but I was genuinely sad to hear it. Rocco is probably 80+ now, but I would not be at all surprised if he were still nitting it up every weekend in AC.

I miss it. I haven't looked forward to very many things in the subsequent years as much as I looked forward to hitting the AC Expressway every Friday afternoon to see the same group of degenerates at our weekly game. Serves as a reminder; live in the present, and have gratitude for the good times.

Thanks for posting what’s the chances Elix is alive and not broke? I recall watching a longer version of this and remember McManus being a bigger jerk than shown here. I also love Elix’s buddies who are clearly guys that are waiting around to collect from him once he cashes.

Hate when I’m right.

'Positively Fifth Street' is about the 2000 Main Event, won by f**king Chris Ferguson.

James McManus finished 5th, despite butchering some hands in epic fashion. Then again, the book in itself is a fun read into just how much poker theory has changed since then.
