Lived in Vegas for 7 years, been spending at least 2 months out here for last 20. Finally getting out to start a family, and eventually settle in the south. My wife loves Carson City and is a lobbyist so we decided to take a year lease and enjoy the small town life.

Any suggestions whether it be restaurants, poker, golf, bars, concert venues in either Carson city, Tahoe, or Reno that I need to check out while exploring the area? Thanks everyone.

Oooh. I'll be interested in hearing your thoughts on Carson City in 6 months. It's on my short list of places to move when I hit my retirement number in a few years.

Pros for me:

It's out west and I'm going to spend 4 months a year hiking, backpacking, kayaking, and camping for free on federal lands.

Decent access to poker: 45 min to Reno, 30 min to Tahoe.

Yea I think the proximity to Reno and especially Tahoe will make the big change in scenery much easier.

Unless it's changed, Tahoe poker is one place - Harvey's. It's mostly 1/3, sometimes 2/5. It gets a lot more active during the Circuit event in the fall.

I’m strongly considering moving TO Vegas later this year.

Would you say your move is more about optimism about starting a family and living a smaller town life? Or are the drawbacks to living in Vegas wearing on you. If it’s the latter, I’d love to have you say more.

I agree Vegas would be a terrible place to raise a family. I’m not considering it as a forever move, as I’m not married with no kids. If I ever do meet the right person and want to settle down, I’m very sure I wouldn’t want to do it in Vegas.

For everyone else, the “retiring to Vegas” thread has lots of great discussion about the very real pluses and minuses about moving to, and living in Vegas.

We are praying for a baby in less than a year, and one of my hard rules with my wife was that was not happening in Vegas. With that said the last six months or so has really had some moments that made me more confident in my decision.

1) The economy has certainly hurt. Never thought living in Vegas would be anything other than a value proposition (take away strip activities). Post covid living in a gated community in Summerlin is nearly as expensive as living in northern Virginia, Charleston, Dallas, places that I love and imo offer far more.

2) I don’t know if it’s getting older but Vegas has changed a lot. More homelessness, more crime, less places that I am comfortable having my wife be alone, pot is inescapable and a net negative imo.

3) Issues with my friend groups. I’m less fun with my single friends than I used to be, lot of divorces with our couple friends. Not trying to judge anyone but Vegas simply has a huge percentage of unorthodox jobs, crazy hours, available vices, and it has led to more unstable friendships than I would prefer (I’ve played online poker for 20 years so I check plenty of weird boxes myself).

I would recommend to anyone that is single with at least a small amount of stability to take a year to live in a party city (vegas, Charleston, New Orleans), live in a big city like dc, New York, LA for year to experience different things.

I would say though, I got divorced at 32 immediately came out here and it was an absolute no brainer. I bounced around between living inHenderson and Summerlin, did all the prototypical Vegas things that involved spending a ton of money, had a great time, would have been single for another decade if I didn’t meet my wife. I think the current landscape of living in Vegas is less appealing for a single guy than it was. Hope that was somewhat helpful and not just ramblings of an over the hill online player

Used to live in Sacramento, Now live in LV. But, spent a lot of time in Reno, NV. I played exclusively at Peppermill. I find it the best run room in town. At times, games are good at Atlantis, Silver Legacy or Grand Sierra, but the consistency of dealers, staffing, game/table choice and selection kept me at Peppermill.
Restaurants change over so much, both casino and non-casino, so any reco's would be old and stale. Histporically I've had good meals at Wild River Grill and Beaujolais Bistro, for non casino options.

I thought the four month deal is in Quartzsite? Or is this the two week deal in Northern Nevada and each two weeks is a differant location?

The Golf is pretty awesome up here. I relocated here in late '21 (15 mins south of Carson City) after falling in love with Lake Tahoe, (obsessed with snowboarding), had considered moving to Vegas, very happy we chose here instead. All the Tahoe / Mtn courses are great and will start opening in May. In the Carson valley area very close to you there's Sunridge, Genoa Lakes & Ranch, Silver Oak, Toiyabe, Eagle Valley... Wolf Run and Lakeridge are in Reno. I haven't tried all the courses yet in the area hopefully will by the end of this season. I'd be down to meet up and play a round with you, sounds like more fun than battling you at low stakes HU online!

Sounds great destroyer. I’m in great need of switching up golf courses, can only play canyon gate, Paiute, and lake Las Vegas so many times before getting bored.

Anyone who thinks Carson City is a small town has never spent any time in an actual small town.

Reno poker has taken a big downturn since the Covid. Peppermill is still a great venue though.

That basque place on 4th street is pretty good. Keep wandering down 4th street after and you’ll degen out big time

It's pretty hot in the summer iirc. Not Vegas hot, but still hot.

+1 Basque food and picon punches are the best reasons to move. Cat houses too I guess. I do find it funny you complain about weed on 2p2 (bananas yo) and promptly move closer to the emerald triangle. You aren’t missing much in Nova, that area is going downhill since hard street drugs were de facto decriminalized.

Two unrelated questions from someone who’s never lived in Nevada…

Where in Nevada did they do all the bomb testing?

I thought I heard that since Covid, the Lake Tahoe/Reno area has been overcrowded and traffic is insane. Any of this true?

At the Nevada Test Site, which is not far from Vegas, and still active doing whatever. A friend of mine worked there for awhile, but couldn't tell me what he did, of course.
