He let it get so cold in his apartment once that his pet fish froze. He walked everywhere (no car), ate super cheap, etc. He would work 3 years, save his money, then quit and spend 3 to 6 months traveling and living in a region. One time it was Norway and Sweden and Iceland. Did he have any relatives there? No. Another time it was the middle east, Israel, etc. Was he a jew or devout Christian or muslim? No.
Then he would return to the U.S. and get another job, which was easy for him to do because he's a talented programmer and has low salary requirements, and start the 2 to 3 year cycle all over again.
Frugal living, mini-retirements, extreme minimalism.
Seems like the guy is a F.I.R.E. (Financially Independent Retire Early) kind of person which I assume el Diesel is. Many of them live the "nomadic van life" or live in "tiny homes". Many farm and grow their own food, and drive a bike (because cars contribute to the depletion of the ozone layer).
El Diesel, once he retires on 280k at age 42 to 44, intends to spend some of the principal every year (most probably 4% of it as all FIREs intend to do). He'll probably continue to play but for much less hours. He will own property (raw land) and probably put a tiny home in it, possibly off grid. By paying taxes today, he will have social security at age 62, which will propel him to having income once the 280k finally runs out because of the 11k per year withdrawals. He may be looking forward to inheritance since he seems to be close to his Dad.
I can't remember which philosopher said that happiness comes not from acquiring more things but by being satisfied with less. el Diesel has things figured out based on the values he lives by.
