Hey all:

I don't think this question & idea has been brought up about Rice before?

Has he considered trading his car in and getting a mini-van or camper or vehicle that he could very easily, very comfortably live out of for a day or two?

There is a whole genre of video makers on the YouTube who engage in "van life" that live out of vans & travel around. Some of the vans are borderline luxurious (obviously they cost a lot more).

So why does not Mr. Rice engage in this to some degree? Over the long term, he could lower his living costs quite substantially. He could cut his Airb&b at least in half. When he needs to shower, go to a gym OR use a comp to get a room. When rooms are too expensive/expensive to get, live out of his van. That would also enable him to travel very easily and increase the venues he could play in.

He would not have to go to Airb&b's nearly as much.

Use the comps/cheap hotel rooms as much as possible. If not available, stay in the van!

As he is so frugal & smart, I am surprised he is not already doing this!

Even though Big Poppa is clearly Diesel, I still root for him.

Looks like he has 20+ subscribers for his newsletter.

as someone who's put a lot of thought into campervans

the skyrocketing demand for them has artificially inflated the price of all vans on the market - your base unit, even if it's a 2003 Econoline with 300k miles on it and will need regular and costly maintenance (and probably needs something fixed as is) will still cost you a few thousand dollars

Even the most basic DIY conversions will cost a few thousand dollars and quite a lot of time to build - bringing it to the people who specialize in converting them starts at about 20k and goes up from there

most of the camper vans you see online that look amazing can't be purchased for <40k and there are many which cost well into 6 figures

look at it this way, a software engineer working for google decides he wants to take advantage of Google's work from home and thus goes all in on a camper van so he follow the waves of the surf season to get in a morning surf session every day - as camper vans are not mass produced that's the kind of person who drives this market

you can see the market for yourself
https://vanlifetrader.com/

if we restrict it to vans under 10k then this is it

our hero rice is in luck, one of the cheap ones is in vegas! is this fate?

it's actually a pretty good deal if you ask me, but it's also a very basic setup as you'd expect from the price given the kbb for the van alone is about 4k

there's no heater nor solar, there is a camping stove and sink and a clean water and grey water tank

so you can cook and clean from the camper, there's also an interior battery that can be charged with a plug but no solar

no heating
no bathroom
no shower
no solar

it's a very basic unit, would need to get a heater added for winter time if he leaves vegas (which he does) and would need to be supplemented via solar because the only way to charge it is to park it at home (which he don't have) or to take it to an RV park (which would negate the savings of using the camper van)

but legit a good deal as far as they go, but still that's like a year's worth housing for him, not to mention it'll need more money sunk into it as well as have a hefty maintenance bill, can you imagine him losing it when he gets a regular 2k repair bill?

Have you seen what his hotel rooms look like after he's been in them? Hair and other garbage all over the floor. Because a maid cleans up. He probably won't want to hire a maid to clean up his car every couple days.

Hey all:

I guess I am lucky to live in the Detroit metro area. There are no shortage of vans here! You can get a cargo van from the mid 2010's that has been decently maintained with like 120K miles on it for well under $10K.

Spend a couple grand on upgrades/repairs to the mechanics of it....then spend a couple few grand on outfitting the interior. So maybe you've got $10K to $12K in it?

Rice doesn't have to make it luxurious, nor does he have to live in it for weeks at a time. Simply have a bed/refrigerator/hot plate/TV in it. A place that he can spend a night (or two) in IF he can't get a comped OR super cheap hotel room. This isn't where he spends ALL his time/nights in, simply a backup or short term option.

Would be good for traveling too!

He needs to lie down? He ain't exactly Kareem. He can fit in a van.

He wants a bed? That's the point of a van - you put a bed in it.

He wants to cook rice? Again, he could have a real stove in a van.

No wifi? Get a phone and tether it. What would that be, maybe $600 a year? I don't know, I have a pre-paid.

On the flip side, a standard full size van WITHOUT an extended roof, will not fit in a Vegas parking garage. No need to ask me how I know. A minivan would fit, and could likely be big enough to hold all the crap he needs, since he's so minimalist. A tiny van (don't know what they're called) like a small Transit van would be much better. Low enough roof and are basically a cargo van inside.

Didn't his lodging expense average about a thousand a month? He could cut a lot of that out. I think his biggest objection is NIH (Not Invented Here), iow, he didn't think of it.

it’s pretty funny those are the reasons he doesn’t want to live in a van.

years ago, i had the choice of residing anywhere i wanted. i narrowed it down to ac and vegas but ultimately chose ac bcz like rice, i have family in the northeast so i wanted to be in close proximity. i also didn't want to deal with 100+ degrees 5 months/year and i can get to vegas whenever i want for <$300 round trip out of ac int'l. if he needed to go to council bluffs, spirit doesn't fly to iowa so prob gotta go to kc and rent/drive but the dude's driving across country anyway so that shouldn't matter and that round trip is <$200. all of the above is much cheaper than paying for gas and putting all that wear on your own car

i mention this bcz like rice, i too am a minimalist. i rent a beachfront studio apt for $1300/month which includes all utilities/cable/full kitchen/gym access and most importantly, running water. this equates to $43/day and he can easily get to long island to see his folks anytime. granted, ac only has three poker rooms but with his strategy, it really doesn't matter where you play. and 6 other rooms are within a 3 hour drive with the nyc area likely opening a couple of rooms within the next 5 years. i too am budget conscious but unlike rice, i worked an office job for the past 20+ years, saved properly and retired at 56

bottom line is, believe it or not, he actually has less expensive/far more comfortable options than what life is now costing him. and i get that some see jersey as the sewer it can be, but it's been 60 and sunny most of april so i see being on the beach any day possible as a real gift. and with no kids, now is the best time in his life to try different things in order to find the right fit

But it always hurts my brain when people from the northeast choose there vs Vegas bc of weather. Dig deeper!

Why would diesel be a dealer when it’s very easy with a little work to make 50 an hour from 2-5 games? Why would he decide to make 8-12$ an hour playing 1-2 (1/10th of what luvdavlogs makes in the lowest stakes games he plays who is dumb and sometimes 1/40th of what he makes sometimes like today at the Wynn) for so many hours if he had the ability to day trade his massive portfolio? Why would he not pay a tax professional and instead not have any write offs, pay taxes in NY and also pay significantly more in taxes than he should? Why would he only invest in stocks that pay dividends based on an old wives tale understanding of how stocks work? Does he not understand that when a stock pays a dividend it comes out of the price of the stock and whether a company pays a dividend or not has no effect on how much money you make as an investor it just effects how returns are delivered, either in a higher stock price or in more shares with a lower price?

I think you’ll find there are lots of inconsistencies in things he does or says and he doesn’t usually take the highest ev decision

to each his/her own. i don't judge differing opinions or preferences. and i noted family as my #1 for a reason. but yeah, i like the change of seasons this area brings. plus, i'm extremely grateful to look out the window every morning and see the water. there's nothing more enjoyable than being able to sit on the beach/boards any given day sipping a drink and watching/listening to the waves roll in. and the sound of rushing water has also been known to be extremely beneficial to one's mental health. but that's me. you do you
