Rice's mission is to live his life contrary to any possible conventional wisdom. He has some notion that it is a great accomplishment to be living life on his own terms even if it's on the bottom rung of society.
Complying with any sort of logical or common sense life advice would be a failure on his part and he derives a great sense of satisfaction from resisting any urge or compulsion to do so.
Rice could actually publish a blueprint on how to do everything in the least optimal way and still come out feeling like a genius. Perfect example would be all the years he wasted at college and law school, never to work a day in his field. Rice will tell you he dodged a bullet there by avoiding the trap of becoming the cliched rich and successful lawyer.
