Read this in the Las Vegas Advisor. Thought I'd pass it on here..

We are seeking casino patrons in the Las Vegas area to participate in a market research discussion on March 1st and 2nd. We are looking to speak with both locals and tourists.

If you enjoy all the different amenities that casinos have such as restaurants, nightclubs, shows, etc., please give us a call at 800-507-6672 or send us an email at recruit@mmrcinc.com to see if you qualify. Those who qualify and participate will be paid for their time and opinions! We look forward to speaking with you soon.

Focus groups can be money homie. Got a call last month from an affiliate calling on behalf of TDAmeritrade (one of my brokers). They wanted plp for a paid focus group about some potential new products and services TDA was considering. They asked me some questions over the phone and I qualified.

I showed up on the day of and it's supposed to be 2 hours. There were 8 of us, they call 6 plp into the room and they leave me and this other guy outside. Said "sorry, we don't need you guys, but since you guys showed up, we'll pay you the agreed upon $175 anyways". Sweet! Got paid and didn't even have to waste anytime

I did something similar with Yahoo way back when I lived in Sillycon Valley.

I did a sitcom one at the MGM in Vegas at the place they have in the mall shops. Only got some worthless coupons though. The show was terrible. I was the only one that thought so, most others really liked it. I saw the same pilot run on tv a couple months later, possibly on the strength of those morons' opinions. It sucked as bad as when I first saw it. Never saw or heard of that show again.

I think the average person gets starstruck and is afraid to offer a negative opinion. I can't believe that 20 of the stupidest people in Vegas that day all ended up in that focus group.

when I was a student, I would call up the marketing companies that did the focus group to get into their database. Then they call you and screen you for upcoming focus groups. $75-$100 to taste pizza, talk about bug spray, shaving cream, etc - easy money.

When I was in school I used to go to these focus groups for all the easy money. One of them had little pieces of hot dogs on tooth picks and my job was to rate the taste of garlic in each of them. I didn't even know they put garlic in hot dogs until that night. I was paid in a visa gift card, went right to the ATM and took out the money.

Wat, how did you get money from a gift card? Didn't the ATM want a pin?

Las Vegas Advisor has been around for over 25 years, pitching comps, discounts, and freebies. (I recall them from the early 1990s when I was counsel to a hotel casino.)

It really is worth a read if you want that information.
