Has anyone driven from Vegas to LA on Labor Day? I usually plan my trips Thursday - Monday to avoid crazy traffic jams but will driving back to LA on Labor Day be as crazy as driving back on any normal Sunday?

I can't say that I've done the drive on Labor Day anytime recently, but what tends to happen on holiday weekends is that some of the traffic gets split between Sunday and Monday, and somehow still seems to suck both days.

I would treat it like you would a Sunday- leave town by 9am or wait until evening.

Expect I-15 to back up from Primm to at least Jean, if not M Resort, if you don't leave early. It will also back up in parts of California but the worst seems to be the loss of lane in Primm.

If you miss early then you might as well wait until dark to head home. I've heard some holiday weekends taking 10-12 hours to get to LA.

I'm pretty sure there was a thread about long weekend traffic from earlier this year - maybe Memorial Day?

The other parts are the long uphills where everyone MUST camp in the left lane doing 55, and the Ag station, where it backs up halfway to Baker.

Driving at night is probably a good idea. A lot of people have figured out the take a day off and drive back Tuesday thing.

Labor Day is the absolute worst day to leave Vegas back to Orange County. You need to leave at 5am in the morning or 11pm at night. Anytime between you are probably looking at 7 hours minimum to get back to Orange County.

Not sure about Labor Day, but two years ago I headed back (at 8am!) after Memorial Day and set my new record for driving home, 7.5 hours.

I left Vegas last Memorial Day at 7am and had no trouble at Primm, slightly slow but nothing more than a few minutes. I left Labor Day last year around 2pm like an idiot and was basically in a parking lot from Jean to Primm with a bunch of cars driving on the side of the road which was rather annoying.

Note: I’m talking about Primm and Barstow, I head North to Bakersfield from there so not sure about 15s from Barstow to LA.

It's bound to get lighter south of Barstow because the NorCal traffic has turned off.

Nah. Cajon Pass slows it down, then you're into LA traffic. I've sat in bumper-to-bumper just leaving Barstow.

I drove from Vegas to San Ysidro (very south of California) on a Sunday. I left at 10:30AM and it took me 8 hours to get there, and 6 hours to get back driving in the middle of the night (1:30AM to 7:30AM). The traffic I experienced on I-15 South that Sunday was mostly coming into Primm and going through the Cajon Pass.

The way back sounds kinda long, did you experience some heavy traffic? We drove from Rosarito Beach to Vegas a couple of times in the evening / at night and got there in somewhere between 5 to 6 hours including a couple minutes of wait at the boarder. One time we made the mistake of starting during the day and wasted over two hours at the boarder and another 2 hours because of traffic on I-15 around San Diego and Los Angeles.

In my experience I don’t travel the Friday, Sunday or Monday of Labor Day. Come in on Thursday, leave on Tuesday.

If your schedule/life just simply won’t allow for that type of scheduling then be prepared for a 7-8 hour drive that’s usually 3.5-4.5 hours.

Don’t anticipate any road closures but check Sigalert.com before you leave. Depending on when you leave and what part of OC you’re traveling from (I live in HB) the toll roads 261/241 and 91 east will save you an hour for about $15 in tolls Las Vegas to Los Angeles traffic (Labor Day weekend)a real stress saver when traveling during commuting hours

Left Mexican border at 1:30AM Tuesday so, no, not really any traffic. I stopped in Primm at around 6:30AM and got home at 7:30AM.
