I am looking for fly out to Vegas with some friends in the middle of July to play some WSOP deepstacks and bet on sports. I have found Allegiant air, cheap flight of $268 round trip from Missouri. We want to stay at a place that has a sportsbook so we can bet on baseball. Any good suggestions? Planning on staying July 14th - 18th.

My suggestion would be Tropicana but understand that while I know they have a sportsbook, I have never bet on sports. Also, it is at the opposite end of the strip from the end that's nearest to the Rio. The closest end of the strip to the Rio is NOT walkable in the middle of July.

If you don't like the sportsbook at Trop, you can go across the pedestrian bridge to the sportsbook at MGM.

I'm suggesting the Trop because that is where the fiancee and I stay when we're in Vegas and we really like it.

When you looked at Allegiant, did you figure in the cost of bags?

Gold Coast is right next to Rio, and it is inexpensive and they have a sportsbook, or you could just hang in the Rio sportsbook.

WSOP Schedule says deepstacks end on July 14th...

I'll have to look into the Trop. Thanks for the info. I have not figured in the cost of bags. How much are they?

July 14th, good to know. Might have to move the trip up a few weeks then. I've stayed at Gold Coast before but had no idea they had a sports book.

You may want to consider something mid-strip, like Bally's, Harrah's or Flamingo. Walking distance to a lot of sights, sportsbooks, and free shuttle to Rio.

I really don't know as the price varies for the type of bag and how you check it in. If I read it right, it seems like they could charge you for carry-ons.

Another drawback with Allegiant is it looks like they have one flight per day so if something happens where you miss the flight or it is cancelled, you will be scrambling.

I was going to suggest Southwest but I see they are dropping Branson service as of June 6th.

I would say Gold Coast would be a lot cheaper than Trop.

Thanks. Found a flight+hotel package through allegiant that is only $450 bucks. And that is staying at Harrah's. Might skip WSOP deep stacks and just play cash.

I'll have to check with allegiant and figure out the cost of checking bags. I'm from KC, so w/ the cost of gas to Springfield and checking bag fee, might just be cheaper to fly southwest.

I am guesstimating it will be about twenty dollars in gas each way if your car gets thirty miles to the gallon.

Why Springfield? If you are going to fly Allegiant, check out their schedule from Des Moines as it is only another thirty miles compared to the distance from Kansas City to Springfield.

But if you do drive out of town to catch the flight, remember you will have to drive back so you need to take into consideration what time your flight back arrives. If it is too late in the day, you will have the cost of a room to stay the night to consider.

Also, what time would you have to leave to make the drive and what happens if you run into traffic?

These are all questions I asked myself and why I decided against using Allegiant and I'm from KC, too.

As someone who takes the Springfield flight often, go Southwest. For the love of your sanity, spend the money and go Southwest. No bag fees, no carry on luggage fees, no charge for EVERYTHING. No drunken tourist flights. Add in your parking fees and gas, and Southwest will be comparable.

Unfortunately for you, Southwest is ending that service as of June 6th.

Hey OP,

If you are looking to book at Rio or any sister property, use wsop.com to get a promo code for the best rate.

I ran the numbers without using the promo code on the normal site and I was coming up with almost a thousand bucks with resort fee and taxes at Rio but when I used the wsop.com site, I was getting $535 without resort fee and taxes.

I've booked Rio and with resort fees and taxes, it was $722.

My frugal side is driving me crazy. I'm still waiting for prices on Southwest to drop and when I was looking there today, I got curious and checked package prices. The prices for some strip hotels with air are about the same as I am paying at the Rio without air.

I just have to keep telling myself that being where the tournament is taking place makes up for the cost. Plus, I don't know what kind of room discount I'll get for playing in a tournament.

I guess it just depends on what you want to do when your in Vegas. If you play the WSOP, its probably worth the extra money to stay at the Rio.

If you are not renting a car, you should take into account how much you will spend on cab fare based on the hotel you choose. For example, a room at the Luxor will cost you at least $20 more in a single round trip cab fare to Rio than would a room at Ballys. Those fares add up quickly to justify spending more money for a room in a better location.

Oh - I have to take the Allegiant one. I'm actually visiting Springfield, and it's the only flight that doesn't mean a hellish exchange. I use Southwest whenever I'm flying any other city, when possible.

It's going to be eat, sleep, poker. Hopefully, I'll be the Senior tournament version of Brock Lesnar. Eat, sleep, Conquer (poker), Repeat.

?? WSOP has already put their discount code on the website. You get no other discount.

Except without the diverticulitis, you hope.

If you read the FAQ, it says you will get a discount for actually playing in a tournament. This is beyond the rate it gives you for using the wsop promo code.

Regarding the diverticulitis, been there, done that. Thankfully, the fiancée has a medical background and made me go to the hospital. In the doctor's estimation, I was anywhere from twenty-four to seventy-two hours from cashing in my chips. It happened on a Friday morning about 2am and I waited until Sunday afternoon to go.

I know it may sound strange that a person who professes to be frugal is going to take a limo to the hotel, but the stress relief it will afford me will be worth it.

Yeah, but you should still be able to find out what the rate is. The site sucks, in the past it told you what the pre-entrant rate was and what the entrant rate was. You have to show your tournament receipt to get the entrant rate.

I think I got fairly close too. I was pooping a lot of blood every 15 minutes. I was hoping things would calm down enough so I could drive to the ER without fouling my car. Eventually it got to where I was running out of blood so I called for a ride and they chaufferred me in an ambulance.

Boy, this thread is bringing up medically related memories.

I had to call for medical assistance for the fiancée once due to trouble breathing and the responders ended up blocking traffic when they got here. One neighbor actually came into our place and asked if it was a real emergency or some kind of drill because traffic was blocked and he had to get to work.

Will be in Vegas June 20-24, staying at Monte Carlo. Plan on playing deep stacks, WSOP event qualifiers, cash games, Open Face Pineapple Poker, and bet on sports (Royals).
