I'm thinking take a bottle of Two Buck Chuck, then sneak the good stuff in and uncork it under the table.

Obvious play is to sit next to a table of hot chicks and use that policy as a way to get involved with them

My wife and i were eating at French Bistro here in St Louis which is part of a James Beard award winner's restaurant group she works for (or did work for regularly) and sat one night next to a regular VIP and his wife. The gentleman has a bottle of Petrus on the table and after much small talk he asks what my favorite wine ever was.

I told him about a 95 Longueville Lalande I once had that was a bucket list wine. And it was shared with old friends.

He replies, this one is a Friday wine, and its your new favorite, at least after the first glass. I said new friends are pretty cool too.

I have a new co-favorite wine as well. lol

We had a restaurant.com GC for ENVY $75 off $150, so we had dinner there last night. We were lukewarm on the experience; for the price (which was low even for "fine dining"), we probably would not return.

First, it was tough for us to get up to $150, so for more budget-conscious fine dining (oxymoron?), this might be a possibility. We ended up ordering:

Artichoke-brie cheese soup $8
Good soup. The brie is very subtle, and we both really enjoyed this. IMO, however, this is nothing to write home about. Just good soup.

Mozzarella-Heirloom tomato salad $12
Again, nothing to write home about, but definitely enjoyable. Tomato, basil, and mozzarella, so of course it was delicious, and the presentation was very nice.

Seafood tower for two $45
Positives: Big, gaudy, and we did not get sick after eating it.
Negatives: Everything else.
Ok, so basically this is a tray of ice with king crab legs, a lobster tail, 4 clams, 4 mussels, 4 oysters, and 4 large prawns. The prawns were overcooked, which is pretty unbelievable. The oysters and clams were not close to among the best I've had (of course, we're in a desert at a steakhouse...). The mussels were good, though I'm not used to mussels being cooked and then chilled. And then there were the sauces. Jesus. There was a tarragon aioli, which was downright gross, and I like tarragon. And aioli. There was an apple vinegar-y dipping sauce, which was fine, though, and there was cocktail sauce, which (I believe) had no horseradish. I think it had chili sauce or something. Maybe I'm picky about my cocktail sauce, but I would have liked just one good sauce for my seafood. Anyway, this was a huge disappointment.

Truffle Reggiano Fries $9
Perfect shoestring fries. Fried twice, shaved reggiano parmesan, and truffle oil. Very tasty, although not orgasmic as many reviews would lead you to believe.

Bone-in Filet $45
Delicious.

Sea Bass with wild mushrooms and crabmeat $36
Nothing special, though a fine piece of fish. The crabmeat added very little.

Garlic mashed potatoes and roasted veggies (came with meals)
As if we needed more food! The mashed potatoes were delicious and whipped nicely. Creamy and garlicky. If we weren't devouring the fries, we would have crushed these potatoes. The veggies were very good, too, but again, we were at our limit.

Pinot Noir flight (3 pinot noirs) $13
Very nice, and all heavy pours. Probably 2+ glasses of wine in the flight, and when 1 glass is $11+, this was a great value.

Service:
The bone-in filet, ordered medium-rare, came out somewhere between medium-well and well-done. After the disappointing seafood tower, I was ready to raise hell, but we calmly just pointed to the steak when the waiter came by, and the waiter was appalled at the condition of it. Within 3 minutes, the chef came out and apologized and told us he got the orders for two steaks confused and that both were sent back to the kitchen. He remade the steak and offered to remake the fish so we could eat together, even though we had already shared half the fish. We declined, nearly full already, but when he brought the filet back, he also brought a fresh plate of fries, and a fresh crock of mashed potatoes and veggies. All in all, they corrected their mistake very well, though serving a medium-well bone-in filet to anyone is a crime in the first place. The only service flaw IMO was that our waiter was switched halfway through dinner, since he had a group of 8 to serve at another table.

Ambience:
The hotel had quite a few people hanging out drinking, but the steakhouse had at most 4 or 5 parties. There was a table of 8, but the rest were about 2 or 3 at most. Certainly the place wasn't bustling.

Overall:
Again, we probably wouldn't go back. The difference in food quality between this and other mid-range steakhouses wasn't worth it. Service was good. Restaurant was pretty much dead. Chef was great at making things right when he messed up the steak. Don't order the seafood tower if you like seafood.
Has anyone been to Envy recently? I searched this thread and found Wyman's review from 8 years ago. Very detailed and helpful, just wondering if anyone has more recent experiences they could share.

i know im late to the party but i cant agree with this enough. we went years ago with my 2 sisters, dad, uncle, grand dad. it was supposed to be the 3 of them but they invited us also and i thought it would be good. it was my uncles pick, im guessing he changed the reservation and said "3 kids would be coming also" because they sat us in a booth near the back with a little tv in the wall. he said no, this isnt the palm and got us moved to a table in the middle of the floor.

the lobster bisque was ok at best, dinner i had the filet and half lobster. lobster was pretty boring but i may be spoiled on that as my (other side) uncle has a beach house in MA where yearly we'd get 20 lobsters caught that morning for $200 from a friend, and theyd always throw him $100 tip cause its so ridiculously cheap. the filet was terrible. zero flavor, needed salt. i can cook one myself for $15 thats far and away better. the martinis were ok.

probably somewhere in the top 5 most expensive meals but easily the most disappointing of any place ive ever been.

Wife and I ate at Giada a few weeks back.

Had the meat and cheese platter to start. Meat was just ok, cheese with the jam accompaniments was the best part. Three sizes available, we had medium.
Wouldn't order again

Both of us had the arugula salad, pretty standard but the cured pancetta made it better than average.

I had Fettuccine with garlic shrimp, wife had some Vegetarian Eggplant concoction. Loved my dish, not a big fan of eggplant, but wife said it was excellent.

Dessert was good too, brownie with Nougat and caramel sauce

Two drinks and tip- $200

Service was great, prompt but not intrusive.

Will be back.

What is the new restaurant inside Stratosphere?
I hardly go down there, but did overhear a player saying how it's the best nonsteakhiuse casino restaurant on the strip.

I'm trying to picture a conversation between some people who just left Joel Robuchon. First one says "that was the best meal of my life", second one responds "because you haven't been to Osteria Francescana yet" while the third one is like "or to that new place at the Stratosphere!".

Yeah, any word on the future of his empire? They just replaced both chefs in Vegas over the last few years. Robuchon was apparently more hands on with his executive chefs than most. Pretty sure both of those guys are younger than I am. Seemed like people were jumping ship at the end - Benjamin to Jean Georges LA and Le Tohic opening his own in SF soon.

Went this summer (partage), the food was good, not great. The pacing was incredibly slow. It was worth trying but I probably wouldn’t go again.

Did the tasting menu at Michael Mina last night. I'll be the first to admit, I'm not a big fan of baked seafood and shellfish but the entire menu was amazing. Portion sizes were actually bigger than I would have guessed as well.

I was looking forward to it but I had a similar experience to DeathDonkey, in our case we had a group of 8 and the meal took around 5 hours.

I thought the food was quite bad though, they try really hard but nothing really worked for me.

+1, A group of four didn't get that much food and we were there for 2.5 hours. It was nice but not memorable (though the oysters prepared 3 ways really stood out to me)

Have one free night on next trip - what's the current thinking on cut vs prime vs SW Steak? Appreciate thoughts of someone who has been recently - service/apps-sides/meat quality, everything....thanks much.
