My father was from the Iron Range in Minn. and then Iowa before California and we enjoyed all forms of ocean food together including octopus. He drew the line at uni, sea urchin.

Sorry Gobbomom, but calamari will not be tough and stringy if it is either cooked a very short amount of time or a very long time. In between, it will double for vulcanized rubber.

the sliders, wow. my friend and i both took one bite and just left them on the plate. can't really remember what else we ordered but i remember the potatoes with a bunch of sour cream and sauce on them was our favorite item, which is pretty sad
i would be interested in a point/counterpoint post written by you and jimmy about a trip to firefly.

i don't get the hate for the sliders. they have too much bun and onion but are delicious if you remove half of each.

i thought the slider sauce was salty and horrible!

Sliders are good imo. I agree the buns are slightly too big, no complaint about anything else though. I don't think that's salt you're tasting fwiw.

augie 2 will confirm the sliders were saltier than the dead sea

come on you know if the dual augies leave sliders sitting on a plate they are not good. maybe they just screwed up the sauce that night and normally its good!

i mean.. i wasn't in love with the sauce but it didn't totally torpedo the sliders, haha.

it's probably way more likely that they screwed up our sliders that night than me not liking something that everyone else likes. i eat a lot of ****ty food. a lot

And just what would the role be for a burnt steak eating - won't try new foods foodbloger Augie? Catagory - humor or dead poker player. Certainly not food reviewer or critic.

I played poker with a guy from Ohio at Mirage a while back who had dinner at Outback the night before because his wife won't eat anything "new", and said he ate at Chili's every night in San Francisco because it was by his hotel.

Augie, are you from Ohio?

Not sure how this hasn't come up yet but Joyful House on Spring Mountain is the nuts for Chinese... it's served family style and every dish I've had there has been phenomenal.

+1 to Bachi Burger on Windmill/Bermuda... reasonably priced and incredible burgers. I heard the owner used to be a chef in a fine dining restaurant and branched off on his own to start up this little gem piece.

For tapas Jaleo at Cosmo > Firefly IMHO... although it can get a bit pricey depending on what you order. I work there so I've had all the dishes and can vouch for just about anything on the menu. The Rossejat is a pasta paella which is basically just fried pasta but is def my fav dish on the menu.

I'm still struggling to find any place with bar food that's blown me out of the water.... I frequent PT's for their boneless wings but that's more of a matter of convenience of location than anything else. I tried Gordon Biersch (sp?) the other night and the garlic fries were solid but that was about it. BJ's is decent as well

After doing a bunch of reading I have selected a few great places to eat at. I hate looking at menus because everything always looks good.

I will prolly only be visiting each place once, so can anyone make a onetime menu selection for me? What is your fave meal to order at each place?

Lotius of siam
grand lux cafe
Sushi Ra
Le Burger Brasserie
Hash House A Go Go

i'd remove either grand lux or hash house depending on which one for breakfast you are going to.

The crispy duck over noodles at Lotus of Siam was pretty good.

This answer might be more qualified for the fine-dining thread, but I really like Aureole for desserts (~$10 each). The house-made ice cream is the best I've ever had in the Vegas.

yeah, I wasn't sure where to post it. prices won't be too bad, barring 1k sundaes or something loll. Will give aureole a try. Might be a noobish question, but is serendipity any good? Thnx.

Yea, off the high roller list, but for dessert only it wiill score well with a significant other. The Eiffel Tower in the Paris Hotel - ask for a table with a view of the Bellagio fountain - go late and set up the timing so that you know for sure that the fountains will go off while you are having your dessert.

Sit at the "sushi bar" section in Le Atilier (sp?) in the MGM.
