Your antisnob crusade ITT is bizarre. This is a thread for reviewing restaurants. You don't have to be a snob to think some restaurants are bad.

I miss the Planet Hollywood poker room pre-CET days when a red-bird would get you a $20 comp.

Can anyone recommend a good Mexican place (not Texmex)...can be off of the strip. Something like the burritos you would find in San Diego.

My two favorite Mexican restaurants are Bonito Michoacan at Decatur & Twain: http://bonitomichoacanlasvegas.com/

and a little further west, Frank & Fina's Cocina on Grand Canyon just south of Flamingo: http://www.frankandfinascocina.com/

So I made it to Holstein's on my most recent trip, and have to say it's the best burger I've had in Vegas. It beats out BLT and the one at Bradley Ogden, which had been my favorites. Had the Gold Standard and it is a perfect burger.

I like Strings better than Sergio's. It's right down the street at Eastern and Tropicana. Decent prices and less snobby that Sergio's.

Goat cheddar cheese. Not for everyone. Makes the burger taste very 'gamey'

Some people love goat cheese, others hate it. Looks like there's nothing in between. I don't like goat cheese, so I just substituted it for regular cheddar.

My experience differed from you.

BLT was a major letdown, possibly because Chef Laurent Tourondel is no longer involved in maintaining the quality of the sourced products and finished presentation (HUGE lawsuit between him and the majority owner of the chain). And I do mean major.... I ate there three times, and all three were one of the worst high end burger experiences I've had.

The Holsteins Gold Standard is very good, but it did not beat Carnevino or Bradley Ogden's burgers which remain my top choices in Vegas. Both are a few bucks more expensive, but the meal is also more complete for the extra $4-$5... in fact you will find the meal to be cheaper if you include salad and desert at Bradley Ogden.

Spoiler:
A little Holsteins tip - they bring out really lame yellow standard mustard with the gold standard, ask the runner to get you some grain mustard instead. It is similar in taste to 'mustardo' topping option you get with the Carnevino burger.

IMO you should try to embrase this gamey experience, because your missing out on one of life's great pleasures if you don't. Good dishes that are gamey have more character and personality, its an acquired taste but once you get it, then there is no going back.

you've got to suck it up and walk into one of those Carniceria's you see all over town... there is one that is okay right on flamingo about a mile past the Orleans that I use every now and again.

The Don Tortaco chain is okay also, but it's not a carniceria.

Boy, that is a dam(*) shame about BLT. BLT was one of my fav "go to's" for reliably good food and great burgers. Thanks for the update, even if it is bad news.

+1 I live in the wholly grail of authentic Mexican food (the bay area, California) General rule of thumb is a carniceria, or a smaller looking "mom and pop" type place is going to blow the doors off any chain.
