Weird - have always done hotpot kind of like soup, where you ladle broth/meat/noodles/veggies into the bowl. Now you're making me question everything haha

When you have Italian pasta, do you drink the water the pasta was cooked in?

Lol. I cook an egg in my soondubu but I eat the soondubu...

If I cooked my pasta in seafood broth, I would probably drink it.

I'm open to learning that it's a cultural no-no, but I've just never heard that. polling all my Asian friends now haha

Wyman,

It depends on the type of hot pot and broth. Shabu shabu when you're basically just cooking meat in hot water and skimming off fat, that's not a broth you generally drink. Many hot pots with seasoned broths you totally drink the broth and noodles, and in certain situations would be insulting not to and waste that deliciousness.

That may be part of the confusion - these are Chinese hotpot places I'm referring to. So yeah, the broths were pretty darn good -- had a seafood one and mushroom one this time. Have had various spicy variants in the past.

Have never done shabu shabu.

Man I was starting to get scared that my few hotpot trips they were all like "look at these rubes that actually eat this broth lolololol"

Its fine to eat the broth though most just have a little bit at the end with their noodles and veggies. Usually the broth is not had during the cooking of the other ingredients.

This is assuming you are not doing sichuan style hotpot, in which case drinking the broth is just asking for death by diarrhea.

Went to Lucky Dragon on West Sahara just off the strip and learned, that when you sign up for a Lucky Dragon Card, you need a local ID to get the $18 food voucher . Spent the promotional $8 free-play on a 3-line quarter 5-7 BP VideoPoker console, and the Mouse hit quad fives for a net result of $44.75, so we decided to eat there anyway "on the house".

Ordered Baos at Bao Now. The place is quite pretty, with little tables in front of the glass encased kitchen. The menu is surprising extensive for a casual take-out type place, and not very detailed on what you actually get when you order. We decided on the eponymous Baos, and figured at the list price of $5.88 (minus five percent discount for Lucky Dracon card holders) we would need three baos each to make up for dinner. The overworked woman behind the counter didn't mention, that each order of bao is in fact served a three slider size baos, and that nine of them is in fact a lot of food.

Ticket time was abysmal for a place without table service and not that much traffic. The food came in large brown cardboard boxes, with no utensils and only a few cocktail size napkins available on the counter. We had asked for water, but the stressed out woman behind the counter was not able to hand it to us with the food. Instead, we waited close to five minutes to have her leave the counter to bring us two cups of water.

Sadly, the Braised Pork Belly baos were out, so we had to make do with Mixed Wild Mushrooms, Braised Poker Chop, and Grilled Chicken. The two former baos were very enjoyable, and quiet filling. Unfortunately, what little taste the Grilled Chicken baos had was overwhelmed by way to much mayo dressing splashed on the carrot/cerely salad component.

It was kind of fun, but not at a level where we would do it again.

Going to Vegas with the family and the gf. Mom and uncle are not very adventurous eaters (refuse to even get steaks medium rare...) while dad, aunt, and gf are a little more adventurous (eat sushi but not like uni, etc.).

I know I always go to Monta and Chada, but thinking of taking them there anyway on Friday.

Saturday is a little trickier. Gonna try out Flock and Fowl for lunch. Wanted to go to Raku for dinner but they're all booked up (both nights. and can't go super late because I'm with a bunch of senior citizens). Was looking at Hachi instead. Thoughts?

Could use a couple of recs for Christmas day. As I understand almost all off strip places should be closed and almost all on strip places should be open. Are there any places that do something special for Christmas day? Thinking going to a buffet is not a bad choice here and just let everyone fend for themselves at night if they get hungry lol. Country Club brunch looks good tho.

Edit: just read the last few posts with Christmas info lol. More advice is appreciated tho!

Pro Kabob n/w corner of Sahara and Valley View. Very awesome Afghani food. For some reason it has the word "Persian" on the sign out front.

Had the beef kabob and son had the chicken kabob. Each came with the expected side of rice and salad. Serving sizes weren't ridiculously large.

The ambiance definitely fits into the family-run business, with husband and wife there along with their little kids. Husband deals with the front of house and was very pleasant.
