It’s that time of year again when poker pros, weekend warriors, try hards and shot takers descend on Las Vegas with fingers crossed and rabbits feet in their pocket. Some get swallowed by the tunnels, some do a blasted, and some maintain a trip report, hoping to share success with those less fortunate and whom are having to do with vicariously living the dream. I don’t have the rabbit’s foot, and I’m there for about two weeks longer than a weekend, but I am by no means a pro. You can decide if I’m a try hard or a shot taker.

Having written such Pulitzer-worthy trip reports in the past, such as
https://forumserver.twoplustwo.com/1...29/?highlight=
and
https://forumserver.twoplustwo.com/1...21/?highlight=
as well as a few shared trip reports with my good friend Watbri, I will endeavour to keep another one going this year. It is trip report season after all.

I have made the WSOP pilgrimage each year for 7 years now, and this year’s trip is a two week event from 2nd to 16th June. The journey from Melbourne, Australia to Las Vegas is painfully long, but always worthwhile. And June is quite simply a fabulous time for a poker player to be in Sin City.

The plan this year is a little different however, as my brother is joining me for a few days, arriving Monday 4th. He lives in the UK (my home country) so I don’t get to see him often at all, and I cannot overstate how much I am looking forward to spending some time with him. As he is not an avid poker player, there will be a little less time spent at the felt in those days, but we do have a couple of treats lined up; not least a dinner reservation at the truly fabulous Joel Robuchon, and golf at Bali Hai. I’m sure there will be plenty of drinking and gambling but there won’t be any tales of debauchery from the nightclubs – I’m too old for that ****.

In the second week, the aforementioned Watbri is hitting town and that is the week that will include an unhealthy amount of poker. Watbri is great company, and always makes an effort to head down from NorCal to LV when I make the trip. And as has become customary, we will enjoy dinner at Craftsteak at least once.

When it comes to NLHE, I’m more of a cash game player than a tournament player, but will take a couple of tournament shots during the fortnight. The only WSOP event I will definitely play is the $1500 2-7 triple draw on 13th June. In other events, there are one or two tournaments in Planet Hollywood’s Goliath series and at the Golden Nugget’s Grand Series that are tentatively part of my plans. Historically, it has been the low stakes cash tables at Melbourne’s Crown Casino that has funded the Vegas trips, but this year, the bigger contributions have come from local tournaments; not least a fortuitous bink of the 8 Game event during the Melbourne Poker Championships (thinly veiled brag), and another luckbox run in a more recent no limit hold’em event. The obligatory money pic, courtesy of these payouts, and the necessary shoe pic, are below.

Also, a special call out to Mrs Donk Dunc and my brother’s good lady wife for happily allowing the two brothers to get together in Las Vegas. It really does mean the world to me. And a big thumbs up of appreciation to Mrs Watbri too, for giving her hubby the license to run with me in Las Vegas yet again. The three of us are very very fortunate to have such wonderful wives.

For now though, it’s time to put the hood up, headphones on, and get through the 14 hour flight from Melbourne to Los Angeles.

That was one long, boring flight. Between clearing customs in Melbourne and clearing customs in LA, that was 16 hours without a cigarette!

Next stop Las Vegas.

We both think so. At the top end of steakhouses, my view is that a great steak is a minimum expectation, but the sides can make the difference. At Craftsteak, I particularly love the Nantes carrots and the corn dishes and that swings it for me.

But, it is difficult to argue that it’s better than Delmonico, Cut, Carnevino or SW and the one at Circus Circus is arguably better value (but not good enough to justify going to that ****hole casino).

It took a while but finally made it to the promised land. Vdara - more room for less money than its neighbours.

Not the best start. Button limps, I limp SB with A9 and BB checks option. Flop A96ccx. I bet $10, BB folds and button min-raises. I make it $50 and he calls. Turn 7 and I jam $160. He calls and has A7. River is a 7. Wtf?

So yesterday finished rather anti-climatically. Cashed out of the Bellagio game -$276 and after a little bit of pottering around, I succumbed to jetlag. Instead of balling it up in Las Vegas on a Saturday night, I did the old man thing and was back in my room by 9.30pm.

What also accompanies the early retirements caused by jetlag is the early starts. It is now 6am on Sunday and once I have necked the coffee in front of me, it’ll be the Wynn low stakes warriors I’ll be doing battle with. I’ll be looking out for the massage girls this morning and maintaining my record of funding their kids education with my degenerate table massage habit.

Biggest pot so far and it still wasn’t that big.

Button straddle for $6 and I limp UTG +1 with 56hh, knowing that I’ll call a squeeze if one happens. Two other limpers and B.B. raises to $36. I’m the only caller.

Flop is 972hhx and BB continues for $50. I call. Turn is a 6 so I now have a pair, a gutshot and the flushdraw. BB bets $135 with his very probable overpair, and I jam, having his remaining $250 covered. He eventually lets it go though so hope he is reading this!

Think I just made a horrible fold letting go of pocket Kings on a 873...2 board. I cbet the flop and was check-raised. I flatted and he then bet !80% pot on the turn, which I let go.

That hand / fold was probably the reason I got involved in the next hand, calling $15 with J9 suited out of position in a multiway pot. One played led the 984 flop and I check-called. Turn was another 9 and he bet $50 this time. Again I just check-called before checking the off suit ace on the river. He took another stab, this time for $115, and now it is either 88, 44 or a whiffed draw I am up against. Turned out it was the latter and we’re now into the Black for the trip.

Big semi bluff gone wrong. An open for $15 and I am one of 4 callers. I have pocket 5s. Flop is 347 rainbow and pre-flop bettor continues for $45. One guy calls and I make it $125. She tank calls and other guys folds. Turn is a 2 and she checks. I jam for $348 effective and she thanks for ages before calling. I brick the river and her 99 holds.

Trying not to be results orientated...... Bad play on my part or do I normally get a fold from 9s in that spot? (For background, this was biggest pot at the table so far and she hadn’t called light in the couple of hours at the table, although she has been active pre-flop and folded to a few pre-flop 3bets).

Got some back. Opened AA and got 3 bet to $55 by an OMC on the button with $220 behind. Didn’t want to give him reason to fold so I flatted and then check-jammed the J high flop. He called and my aces were good. Never got to see his hand.
