Got home from Vegas and back at local tables

I had to collect a purchase from the shops at the Venetian and as I am leaving town in a couple of hours, I have ended up just jumping into a game in the whilst here (Apologies to all you Adelson haters).

As you would expect, the game is filled by those that are many years beyond retirement. However, the age barrier didn’t stop two of them getting it in with the worst of it against my set of 4s.

And also as you might expect, stealing blinds is a little easier here than at most tables.

Ran pretty well in my last session of the trip,
Summed up by my one button straddle resulting in being dealt aces. Time to rack out, collect my case and head to the airport. Summary to follow from McCarron.

So, that gets us to trip summary time.....

5 days is a short trip for me and it is always painful to leave. That said, I am clearly very lucky to be able to make the trip at all and thanks, as always, to Mrs DD for indulging me once again. Thanks also to the good man that is Watbri - for changing his plans and jumping on a plane and heading down to LV to keep me company. And thanks to Mrs Watbri for being so accommodating again; we’ll have to meet one of these days.

I’ve stayed in Planet Hollywood before but not for a few years. My room was excellent and far better than I remembered it. The resort fee is painful at $41 a day (I used to stay at PH when they were one of the last few properties on the strip not charging resort fees) but other than that, I can’t complain. And their Starbucks is open 24 hours which is handy when you are waking up at 1am and looking for coffee.

Vegas in December feels very different to Vegas in June. There are a lot less people on the Strip in the early hours of the morning and sitting in a poker room feels very warm when coming in from the outside wearing layers of clothing. The rodeo was obviously in town too - lots of Stetsons wondering around and all being super friendly. Much better than non-communicating poker players with hoodies and headphones.

The highlight of this trip was undoubtedly the hockey game with Watbri. It was such a great game, viewed from awesome seats, and all free of charge. The lowlight of the trip was busting the 8 Game tournament 3 short of the money in a massive pot when I was a big favourite. Salt in the wounds was then seeing Watbri bubble.

From a cash game perspective, I was surprised how sparse the games were in the early mornings. Playing heads up in the only $1/$3 game running in the Bellagio when there were no low stakes games running at Wynn or PH or MGM does not suggest the poker economy is thriving. But then again, maybe that was an oddity caused by time of day, day of week and time of year.

From a personal point of view, I had planned to explain how poorly I felt I had run. Not just on taking beats or being on the wrong side of set over set, or missing all my draws, but just general card deadness. But then the last session of the trip happened this afternoon at the Venetian and the ledger has well and truly been squared.

I played 13 sessions over 49 hours (excluding the tournament) and logged 10 W’s and 3 L’s. Overall, I made a $2415 profit to average just north of $49 an hour. It could have been much more if I had been able to fold mid pocket pairs to a squeeze play. For anyone that is interested, the finer details are below.....

+$196. 4 hours Wynn $1/$3. Mon. W
-$300. 4 hours Bellagio $1/$3. Tue. L
+$661. 8 hours. Aria $1/$3. Tue. W
+$267. 2 hours PH $1/$2. Wed. W
-$400. 5 hours. Wynn $1/$3. Wed. L
+$352. 4 hours. Bellagio $1/$3. Thu. W
+$179. 1.5 hours. Wynn $1/$3. Thu. W
+$211. 4 hours. Aria $1/$3. Thu. W
+$91. 0.5 hours. PH $1/$2. Fri. W
+$473. 2.5 hours. Bellagio $2/$5. Fri. W
-$600. 8 hours. Aria $1/$3. Fri. L
+$446. 3 hours. PH. $1/$2. Sat. W
+$839. 2.5 hours. Venetian $1/$2. Sat. W

Mon. +$196. 4 hours. $49.00 p/h
Tue. +$361. 12 hours. $30.08 p/h
Wed. -$133. 7 hours. -$19.00 p/h
Thu. +$742. 9.5 hours. $78.11 p/h
Fri. -$36. 11 hours. -$3.27 p/h
Sat. $1285. 5.5 hours. +$233.63 p/h

$1/$2. +$1643. 8 hours. $205.37 p/h
$1/$3. +$299. 38.5 hours $7.77 p/h
$2/$5. +$473. 2.5 hours. $189.20 p/h

That looks good but there are still the expenses of food, taxis, flights, hotel, pit games, sports bets, massages and all other incidentals to take into account. (I’ll leave shopping out of the equation as I would have been shopping for Christmas presents back in Melbourne anyway). The final score is that I am a smidge over $300 worse off than I was before I considered making this trip. But at least I am going home with more money than I came with. (Flights from Australia ain’t cheap).

That’s about it guys. I love Vegas and love poker so clearly love making these trips to this mad, ****ed up but wonderful place. Hopefully I’ll be able to make it back next June for yet another WSOP trip and if I do, I’l be sure to write another trip report.

Thanks for reading and to those that have added comments, thank you thank you. I enjoy sharing the stories and it is really encouraging when I see the notification on my Tapatalk icon tell me that someone has contributed.

Very lastly, I hope you guys run like I did in the Venetian today. That was fun!

Ok all good. I was only there 1.5 hours and left same time you did so was not sure how it was before i got there. I could see how it appears as softplay at times, but at 1-2 I personally do not like to get mixed up in hands with friends that are tricky players so just wont call their opens with bottom of my range or with small piece of flop heads up. Can't speak for the others like i said but that particular table had a lineup that wasn't great.

I didn't recognize you from the thread or would have said hi. I like the material

Thanks. I didn’t realise either that you had been part of the game. Which seat were you in?

The game at PH was reg infested and actually was pretty bad. We had 4-5 regs throughout and they are not great with the tourists. Whilst they are friendly enough, they are too obviously all playing together, soft playing one another when heads up, and calling one another over to each other’s tables when a slightly drunk tourist sits down. They have clearly given up on any subtlety.

Whilst I don’t mind because I don’t think any of them are particularly good, they are possibly slowly killing their own game. Tourists will recognise them and maybe go and play elsewhere.

For information, this is the younger reg crew that if you have played at all frequently, you’d recognise predominantly from PH, MGM, Bally’s and Bellagio. One of them has a vlog.
Which one?

Saying hi to someone you know or talking about work/poker/ life at the table between "regs" might make it obvious that you are a local or play alot, but it is better than the hoodie/headphones/sunglasses type of players that dont talk to anyone.

At least the Hoodie Brigade doesn't cheat (collusion is cheating). I'd rather have non-cheaters at my table than cheaters.

Correct. And I’m not saying he was unfriendly or anything. But he and other regs did dry obviously soft play one another. For example, said Man of the Cloth opens for $15 and gets 3 bet but Reg2 to $45. MOTC calls out of position. Flop 245hhx check check. Turn off suit 9. Check check. River off suit 10. Check check. Reg2 shows AhAx and wins.

Another great report, Dunc and watbri; thank you for keeping me there while I'm here. I've got to renew my passport and try to get there next year.
