I just moved to Vegas. I just moved to Vegas.

I moved to Las Vegas at the beginning of July. Before I moved I went through most of the threads about wanting to move here and took the advice of the people. I had a job locked up and a place to live. I do not own a car or have a bankroll for poker....
Before I moved here everyone in my home town said I must be crazy to move with limited money and no car. I did lots of research of the cities bike paths and bus systems. After being here for two months I think that both a great and better than most big cities.

I have now been a resident of Henderson for two months, I ride my bike 10 miles to my cooking job on the strip each way. If I am too gassed to ride home I can get to the south strip transit terminal from my work in ten min and get dropped off less then a mile from home, so getting home takes a while but also saves my legs from too much work. I've played poker four times since I've been here. Two tournaments and two cash game sessions three of which came at GVR one at Man Bay. GVR has a pretty good morning tournament for someone with a limited roll like my self. $45 BI no rebuy or add on 5K stack and 20 min blinds. Went kind of deep in the tournament with out much resistance until I had to flip. 12/59 for no cash but the play was soft AF. Played a sit go at Man Bay $65 late reg for 10 blinds and I'll never do that again. The two cash sessions both came at GVR one 2-4 limit session bought in for $80 and left with $350 after tipping out. Second was 1-2 in for $240 out for $500 after tips.
Browsing the casual dinning thread I found some places I wanted to try out, being a cook I love how many options for food are in this town. I tried Rolling Smoke, shake Shack, and Brio at Town Square. On Friday I have the day off and want to take a coworker to get some lunch and a beer. Any recommendations ? Someone told me the place at the top of the strat has a good happy hour, anyone know if this is true? Anyways, for people who see this that are thinking about trying to come out to Vegas my best advice would be... Have a job locked up, a place to live, and take a chance. This is the best city I have ever lived in.
Cheers!

The bar is called 107 Sky Lounge and you obv. mostly pay for the view. If it's still the same happy hour as a couple of years ago, it's 2 for 1 cocktails and half prize apps.

Good luck in Vegas!

You ride your bike 10 miles to work in 100 degree weather? Seems unpossible, but even if so, don't you stink when you get there??

It can be lower than 100° if he start his shift early in the morning. And for your info, when you're a cooker it's impossible to smell nice and fresh so I'd say that the stink is not a big issue for him.

Enjoy your life in Vegas OP, would be cool if you upload some pics !

I don't think it makes a huge difference if you get to work sweaty or if you start to sweat after 5 minutes in the kitchen.

Besides that, airstream helps tremendously with not getting too sweaty and since he works in a kitchen, he has to change clothing anyway.

Sounds good so far.

That you ride from Henderson to the Strip and back daily sounds like an unnecessarily tough row to hoe. You may find that the fall/winter wind presents a bigger issue that the summer heat. If you can do so, and know something about car, get a "basic transportation" car for commuting on bad days. Alternatively, consider a motorcycle ? There are plenty of routes between where you live and your work that are pretty traffic free for much of the way.

Your quality of life will upgrade with better transportation. Look into it.

For a Friday lunch and a beer, try the Las Vegas casual dining thread. I've been here for many years and find new spots detailed there on a regular basis. Since you cook, I might suggest Carlitos, on Sunset near GVP..... generally very good New Mexican food

Good luck, stay away from gambling generally and you'll be fine.

Thanks. I'll report back if the happy hour deal is the same on Friday.

I don't want a car, haven't had one for almost ten years. I played in the 2-4 game because I was waiting for 1-2 to open and it was soft.

Yes sometimes I stink. I take a hobo shower in the bathroom when I get to work and change my clothes. I work at six am so I leave my house around 420 and it has never been 100 degrees when I leave, going home is another story but that cold shower when I get there is tits. Even if I drove 15 min into my shift I'm a hot mess for the most part thanks to our steamer and oven. On my break and lunch I change my under shirt and my chef coat. I moved from high elevation so riding ten miles only feels like 5-7 miles. Also I use DR Broners peppermint soap and I highly recommend it.

I hear really great things about Carlitos. I am New Mexican so I would make that kind of food at home. Sometimes I'll Uber to and from work if my legs don't feel good when I wake up but that's only happened when I had an 8 day stretch at work.

Well, it ain't Sadie's, but most times Carlito's stacked enchiladas are decent enough.

I will recommend highly that anyone best read the label and dilute that soap when using it.
