Don’t give up your European health insurance. I needed some expensive dental work last year and just flew to Europe to get it done without having to pay a couple grand out of pocket.

The difference is that as a European, you’re going to regret overstaying your visa because that means you’re unable to use the visa waiver program for the rest of your life. That doesn’t really apply to the illegals from Central America.

Did you bother to look at any other major metropolitan area? Las Vegas is one of the cheapest major cities to live in in the entire U.S.

Miami Beach, for example, has an index of 143.6 according to that same site:
https://www.bestplaces.net/cost_of_l...da/miami_beach

Miami is at 137.1 https://www.bestplaces.net/cost_of_l.../florida/miami

I originally moved to Las Vegas (Spanish Trail) from the Washington, D.C. metro area, which is significantly more expensive than either LV or Miami. It's index is listed as 173.9. https://www.bestplaces.net/cost_of_l...bia/washington

In fact, I specifically lived in Chevy Chase, MD, which has a cost-of-living index of 227.1, which is close to double that of Las Vegas. https://www.bestplaces.net/cost_of_l...vy_chase/20815

And we haven't even touched on other high COL areas such as Boston, NYC, LA, SF, etc.

Just because Las Vegas has an index higher than 100, that doesn't make it one of the most expensive places in the country to live; it just means it's more expensive to live there than to live in Podunk, Illinois or Kansas.
Yeesh, I used to live in San Jose, index 260. Sounds about right because my small 1 br was $2700 a month, and that was 3 years ago.

Dispensaries in Las Vegas do home delivery.

I was driving through some poor area, sketchy people loitering around a corner, when i spotted some nice middle class houses in what looked like a gated community. Then i saw a billboard and it said houses start from 600k. I was shocked to see that.

From other threads, people say the era of nice apartments for 500-600 is over.

So where is this cheap Vegas? Is it cheap because all the Cali folks are comparing back to home? It did not seem cheap to me.

The rent issue is a lot of the apartment complexes are now "luxury" or in high rise apartments with high HOA costs. They even have luxury apartments in the worst part of downtown.

I have a condo at the Meridian I rent out that I bought for 89k when the recession hit and I'm able to charge $1750/month. Never vacant since it's cheap compared to other places.

Even Desert Manor where TheTrooper famously lived costs 900-1k now. It got bought out about a year ago and they're moving all the people out so they can charge more rent.

Prices now are higher than pre-bubble. It's becoming unaffordable for most people and prices are stalling and stock is growing

If unemployment goes up the market could be in trouble, but if you want a job in Vegas now you can basically get one. Everywhere is hiring.

Wow. I came to make fun of the idiotic premise of this thread.

In the midst of doing that, I was fascinated by the self important “academic” douschebaggery

It's hard to think of another major city where that's true.
Then I stuck around for the casual racism and xenophobia

Joke is on the guy who confuses facts with racism. If you’d like to educate yourself https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Visa_Waiver_Program lists countries that participate in the visa waiver program. (Most) Europeans can do that and would be stupid to overstay because that blocks them from easily coming back. People from Central America do not have visa free access to the US anyway so they can’t lose that privilege by overstaying. Should have been relatively easy, even for the simple minded.

Score one for facts over yet another "wow" post .

Nice retort.

(Beginning a post with Wow, is a tell analogous to suddenly checking your hole cards when a 4th suited card hits the board.)

Fair enough, well stated. I was mostly being an *******, drunk posting anyways. So, apologies for that.

Seems like this thread should’ve been “tell me what you love most about Vegas?” and it would’ve been a fun thread...

You were right about one thing at least, the thread premise is idiotic.

All good. I tend to get unfriendly when someone calls me racist.

True, but you already knew you were in for a treat when you saw who started the thread.

As far as the weather is concerned, personally I would much rather have dry highs of 110 than highs of 95 with God awful humidity with a heat index of 110. Humidity, mosquitoes in the south suck

True, 105 and 110 isn't that big of a deal in Vegas, if you are on the strip then you are not far from the next Air conditioned casino. The worst part is going to your car in a covered parking garage in the summer and its like 150 degrees walking to your car.

I lived in Florida most of my life and 90 to 95 there is much worse. In 5 minutes you are covered in sweat.

It’s only slightly better in the Midwest. 110 in LV doesn’t feel worse than 95 and absurd humidity in KC. And don’t get me started on that -20 (or worse) wind chill in the winter.

LV certainly doesn’t have the best weather in the US but it’s far from the worst.

This winter never even got to 32 degrees where I live in Vegas. It did snow pretty decent for hours 1 night(snow covered cars) but it was only like 35 degrees. I thought it had to be sub 32 to snow but not the case.

It was probably pretty cold where the snow formed.

Vegas being hot is a good thing. It’s not a bad thing. It’s a lot better than living in a city where seeing the sun is a rare occurrence.

The lack of mosquitoes, houseflies, and other insects is an underrated feature of Las Vegas.

It's only when the dry heat breaks ~108 that it becomes oppressive.

Vegas certainly does have skeeters, not like in swampland, but they are vicious in their own right. I got bit about 5 or 6 times one night and my hand swelled up to where it looked grotesque compared to my other hand. On the 22nd floor too, he must have rode up in an elevator.

In the South or Midwest, you'd have needed a transfusion to survive an attack.
