Do I need to offer more than $20? What upgrade should I ask for? Solo travel.
I don't really see a need at either of these hotels to use the $20 trick. I've never stayed at Rio, but they're all suites, so not sure that $20 would be enough to get their next level up. Vdara would probably just get you a better view- every room is more than sufficient, especially for solo travel.

If I have a basic room at Monte Carlo what would an upgrade get me? I heard the the $20 trick never works here though.

Rio or Ballys for WSOP late May/early June? Rate for Ballys approx $100 less over 5 nights. Not beholden to staying at Rio, especially since shuttle from Ballys. I like the idea of being on the strip. Last year I went baller and stayed at Bellagio with my wife. This year flying solo so property not as important. Want to save money for tourneys and SNGs. However, I don't know much about Ballys and don't want to stay there if it's a total ghetto. Advice?

Rio and ballys are about comparable... rios rooms are a little bigger, but ballys are more modern.

What's more valuable for you:

Bally's
-decent room ( even better in the south tower if you can get it )
-strip location
-need to take the shuttle/cab to Rio ( i heard the shuttle can get full quickly )
-other poker rooms within walking distance

Rio
-bigger ( but comparable? ) room
-convenience of walking to you room at any time
-$100 more

I enjoyed the Flamingo. Cheaper than Bally's when I was there last (2009, wife was comped a whole week via roulette play in AC). Hotel is not the best, but the pool was fantastic. Plus across street from Bally's shuttle and great strip location....God I miss Vegas.

Does the resort fee at MGM include internet access in the room? Does it also include gym access?
Trying to decide between Monte Carlo and MGM (using the poker rate).

I've not ever been into monte carlo, but the thought of locking myself in to playing x amount of hours in the mgm is scary... The last time I was there during the wsop the poker room was pretty dead, tourneys no runners and the games that were running we bad I was staying in the Tropicana and I still avoided playing there even tho it was next door

MGM for quality (restaurants, bars, club, gaming floor), Monte Carlo for location.

Both poker rooms are bad. Monte carlo you can take the monorail to the Aria real quick.

its a quick walk between the Monte Carlo and the Aria poker room which is right on the edge of the Aria next to the walkway from the Monte Carlo. The Aria poker room is closer to the Monte Carlo rooms than the Aria rooms.

If the monorail is taken(from Monte Carlo) you will end up at the Bellagio.

Probably easier to walk from Monte Carlo.

Agree that you don't stay at MC for MC. You stay at MC so you can play at Aria/Bellagio.

MGM has more to do on site, but poker room is in a bad temp location. Games are v. good though (also will have many games going ~12 to 15).

Cheers,

S

I'm staying there with a buddy. Last year we played mostly at MGM and we loved it. Very good games.
It's 4 hours of play per day between the two of us. Easy game i'd say.

The wifi, is that in room wifi? That could make of break it for me. MC has in-room internet, but no wifi in room (free)

So what properties give the best value for the resort fee? This of course depends on what you value. Personally I don't need or want access to the gym, or to the pool, or need a newspaper. I'm there to play poker. Wi Fi/internet is useful. What else do I get for my money? Or more precisely how to get the best deal for what I might actually use.

Oh

So MGM

Fee gives you free wifi internet in your room. You can also pay and upgrade to a faster one (not necessary)

There is wifi in the poker room

For gym, you have free access to the cardio room on the fourth floor. Treadmills and bikes, but no weights.

There is a full gym by the spa that's $10 to access. You get free fruit/bottled water/energy bar. Go find my old TR for pictures.

The MC is connected to Aria & Bellagio, so you can get to all 3 poker rooms without even having to go outside.

I just stayed at the MC and I had free wifi both in my room and on the floor. However, you have to pay and upgrade to get a really fast speed.
