I totally understand. Poker can be a tough mental game as it’s not for everybody. You think you’re better than you are then reality sets in. He probably had a tilted session in St. Louis where he lost 5 buy ins then told himself it’s not worth it.

I remember the time that I was around 21 and working at this company to pay for college. I was nearing graduation and had a very successful(ie lucky) run
at sports betting and had a pretty nice roll for a kid still living at home.

I was sure that I had the knowledge to make a living gambling so
I quit my job and moved in with a friend.

Ha, within 60 days I was back at home and begging for my job back.
They took me back, both of them.

the other aspect of poker for a living is the 'working' conditions. The old, sick, lame and lazy are thick at the tables. They just tossed an elderly guy out the other day for putting his hands down his pants, handling his junk, then going back to playing cards.

Getting coughed on, sneezed at, berated, and generally listening to non-stop inanity is hard to take on a weekly basis let alone a daily one.

Went to the restroom to take a leak and a full adult diaper was laying on the floor. Made me retch and want to run out of there and never go back.

When I went to the restroom at belliago near the poker room, there was a guy sitting in a stall watching adult content on his phone beating off in the stall. I looked at the bathroom attendant and he just looked at me rolling his eyes and shaking his head knowing he will have to clean something up.

..

.
Possibly the stupidest lengthy discussion I ever heard at a poker table was in late 1999. Several players went on at length about the upcoming Y2K crisis. NONE of them knew anything, yet this went on for about two hours .... not a fu**ing clue about programing or code or anything, but opining with 100% certainty and posturing with knowing, self important glances/looks and oblique references eliciting nods of agreement.

Hey, if you want non-stop inanity, you always have NVG posts and you can play online to avoid the coughing, sneezing and other unpleasantries of live games.

WELL............
The Legend has returned my friends.
You want to know the story?
Sit down, buckle up and take off your pants.

Definitely made it to St. Louis. Really was not much there at all. We checked into the hotel. Put our bags for the night in the room and sat down for a few moments. Took some time and thought about the journey ahead and the life changes coming along.

once we left the room we explored the casino and with the downpour of snow we had, we decided to not drive to anything else. Poked my head into the poker room to look for anyone that I might recognized. Nothing there. Finally decided to buy into the evening tourney and had a great time.

Little did I know my buddy who was making the journey with me was at the table games blowing his money. I made it through to the final table of the tourney. Every break walking around and hunting for my friend to come cheer me on. Ended up busting out 5th place. A good cash to start the trip.

The night was winding down and I was not impressed with the St. Louis atmosphere. I decide to head to the room and limit any temptation out there.

Just a few hours later I receive a text from my friend and he is out of money. Of course I expected this. Just further down the line. I mean who brings $600 for a cross country poker trip? So he is panicking and crying his eyes out. Nothing we can do now. I am not paying for this dude the whole time. Luckily his father was with us.

He of course tells me, Don't tell my dad! lol dude you are 26 years old, scared of your dad? Of course his dad walks in a few moments later. I spill the beans and his dad is more sad for him then anything. He then ask me to take him back home!

I am already not feeling this drive and figure a long flight might be the better option, so I abide and get on frontier and book a flight out of cinci to vegas for the following morning. I spend the night canceling hotel reservations and booking new reservations in Vegas and email apartments for showings.

Later that night the father says **** it lets GOOOO!! Ends up paying for flights for him and his son and splitting the hotel with me.

Wake up at 6am. Run out the car in the snow and repack my bags. We jump in the car and drive 6 hours straight back to the cinci airport. Well it finally hurts them, the son has no money! They still plan on going, so it is what it is. We arrive at the airport. Decide to park the car in the extended parking since they were planning on coming back, I will get my car later.

We are getting ready to board the shuttle bus and his dad pulls out an envelope and hands him 2k in cash for the trip. He is pumped. New life for him. Just hours ago he was contemplating suicide he says.

Make our way through the airport, board the plane and we are off!

Excitement still running through me just a kid in the candy store. We finally touch down and shuttle to the Linq, still said they don't have a poker room anymore. Of course the first night there, we run to the stratosphere to eat at Roxy diner. They have a tourney getting ready to start. I remember how easy it was here in the past. I jump in and end up chopping with my buddy at the end. Nice result for the first night in vegas. The next couple days are uneventful. Poker poker poker.

I look at a few living options and still undecided. No biggie, I have free nights so I have time to spare. no flight booked back, so whats the rush. I am living my dream, right?

Well all is going well until.....................

We are in a tourney at the stratosphere again. I know I know, but it is just so easy there! These players were garbage. We venture out during the break and walk next door to the edibles. Oh right after we place a large bet on OSU buckeyes in the march madness bracket.

We end up purchasing some of our own edibles. Hey it is legal, so why not. Keep in mind, I am a rookie when it comes to all of this. I don't drink or do drugs. I just wanted to try it before Isettle in my life. We walk back to the casino, pop one of the gummies in. 45 minutes later and nothing. I am not sure if I am supposed to feel anything then or not. Was I supposed to suck on them or just eat them? I ate it. So I decide to eat another one. 2 hours since the first one. I am sitting in cash game and my buddy is high off his ass. He disappears to eat at the buffet. I am still not feeling anything. So hey why not, I take another one! lol 6 hours has gone by, my buddy comes down from the buffet.

Dad: "Where you been?"
Dylan: " I was at the buffet."
Dad: "You were there for 4 hours!!!!!!"
Dylan: "No wonder I feel so sick."

I remember that conversation, just like I remember the rest of the night. I start feeling like ****. Having trouble breathing. We decide to head to the linq. Call and uber and hang out side. I feel sick. My face starts swelling up. We hop in the uber and start our track back to the linq. Abotu half way there, I can't breathe. My throat and tongue are swollen. Uber driver rushes me to the hospital. My buddies head home.

My night was just beginning. I am rush back the room and immediately injecting with shots. Turns out, whatever was in there caused an allergic reaction to. My tongue was so swollen and I couldn't breathe. So there I am laying in the hospital room, high, seeing things and can't breath. Iv injected and couple breathing tubes shoved in me. I am panicking cause I see the grim reaper standing outside my door! Finally I fall asleep and wake up around 2 am. No tubes, just a bill laying on my bed for $4700 dollars.................................

There ya go, The dream was busted. I never read the back of the edibles. 17 servers in a bag, 10 pieces. I ate 3 pieces. so do the math. Half my roll gone, due to stupidty and an allergic reaction. Of course I could of waited and made payments but I am not about that. I dumped my money and paid it off.

Well my dreams ruined, my mind is shattered. What do I do?

We spend a few more days in vegas, contemplating staying longer for fun. I am unemployed now and have nothing. I decide to fly back. For some reason I don't see starting a life in Vegas with 5k is something that would last long.

Fast forward to today.

Here I am, still in Dayton, Ohio crushing local tourneys and saving money. I am in a hole with some credit card debt because of being unemployed for a few months when I got back. I have a good job right now and the rebuild has been in progress. The dream is far from dead, and will happen sometime. Will it be tomorrow? no

But it will happen. I have faith for me and confidence in my ability.

Any other questions, feel free to ask.

I was ashamed and scared to return to the darkness and hatred of two plus two, but maybe this will be a good lesson for someone in the future.

The dream is still there and burning in my soul. I hate Ohio and am ready to roll. Sometime soon, it will happen.

Thanks for the reaD!

+100,

Live and learn.

Watch Rounders, then come back out here on your own dime when you are ready.

Get a job here and grind a bit to get the feel for Las Vegas.

You're already a lot smarter than you were.

Thanks for the update OP. Ascholes version 2.0 will be better prepared whenever you decide to make it out to Vegas again.

And kudos for abhorring debt and making the responsible choice about paying off your hospital bill instead of doing the easy thing and prescribing to a payment plan.

Good job with the weight loss. If you hate Ohio, why not just get a job in Vegas and still grind?

I plan on being out there and doing just that. But I want to do the responsible thing and pay off the credit card first. So that’s my plan. Pay that off. Rebuild my savings to a respectable number and make the move.
I have been driving for Uber and Lyft to make spare money. And just grinding the gym, work, and poker.
