Just read this and throwing a PSA out there... paying off that bill was def -EV.

One options is to set up interest-free monthly payments, prob even like $50-100 / month.. maybe less..?

Or - best option: Since hospitals typically end up writing off / getting stiffed for self-pay bills, you are actually in a good position to negotiate in a way that is actually win-win.

If you call up the billing office of a hospital or medical office, and indicate you would be willing to pay off some portion of the bill (often as low as 50%) right now, they may respond with, 'sweet! let's gooo!'.

The bottom line is they a) get stiffed a sh-- ton of the time, and b) the amount you see on the bill is waaay overinflated compared to what they get from insurance companies.

Do many poker players NOT have health insurance?

I dunno but even people *with* insurance get into these binds, especially re ER bills when traveling. If it's 'out of network' you could owe a big bill. Also, many folks have such high deductibles that they'll be on the hook for large amounts.

Just want people to know that many (most?) doc offices and hospitals will negotiate with you if there is a big bill that you're responsible for.

I can vouch for that. Here's what happened to me...

Before Obamacare, there was something called Catastrophe Insurance (I think it's still available but only in certain circumstances). Back in the day, you didn't need full health insurance.

I was young, healthy, never went to doctors. So the catastrophe insurance covered me in case I get cancer, hit by a bus, etc.

So, one day I did go to doctor. He recommends I take a handful of tests, etc. Bill comes out to something like $1400.

I was bummed, but figured with all the money I saved over the years from not paying insurance premiums, it's still +EV over the long haul.

About 45 minutes later I'm at a bar and get a call from the doctor's office. Tell me when they charged me they didn't realize I didn't have health insurance. So if I want, I can come back and they can void the original bill and charge me only $400.

In this case, I didn't even need to negotiate. Guilt seemed to get the best of them. Even though I was pumped at the savings... just made me pissed off at the entire medical system seeing how arbitrary pricing is.

So the moral of the story...

Always try to negotiate with doctors and hospitals.

Hospital bills come in the mail, and it typically takes 120-180 days of non payment to go-to collection.

But ok.

im going full time pro, specialty is 5/5 plo, nlhe cash. is vegas still a recommended spot to grind in the US. Ive read that the depth of talent in Vegas makes it not a great place to be a full time pro. Im also into the vlogging game.
