Phones and headphones aren't allowed where I play. Are they allowed in the Vegas and LA card room cash games?

I appreciate the nitty promo crumb suckers making themselves easy to spot before sitting down. I once saw five of them at a table with two open seats.

Why would you want to use headphones and an ipad at the poker table? Serious question. I mean i every now and again answer a text on my phone or reply to a discord at the poker table, but its very brief.

Ask the guy in the cavalry hat who opens up a laptop to watch movies every time I've seen him at the V ?

I love the iPad guys who fold for an hour slowing down the game because they don't know they have a hand and then raise pre flop one hand and it goes fold fold fold and they complain how no one gives them action.

Years ago there was a regular at a local card room who read library books at the table. Not personal books, because they cost money, but books checked out of the library. Needless to say, the one or two hands a hour he played got very little action.

Never said I wanted to. If I was poker president I'd ban them from use at the tables, except long tournaments.

I am not the most social person at the poker table, simply because I don’t like to talk. The fact that Vegas rooms allow phones is a huge plus imo and I never slow down the game and I am definitely not a tight player!

Sometimes when I happen to be sitting next to a person who thinks he/she is at the poker table to chit-chat non-stop, I will put on my headphones just to stop them talking and allow me to concentrate. So it is good to be able to have that option.

my room banned phones, headphones and tablets from seated players. Allowed them all 2 years ago after much pressure from the regs.

the games are infinitely worse as a result. I'll very often be playing at a table with 5 or 6 players with ear plugs and watching movies or tv shows or playing other poker games on their phones.

so bad for the game

I bring headphones so I can put them on when someone tries to tell me stories or won't stop talking. A lot of times I wear them without anything playing so I won't be bothered.

very smart, because having a conversational, social table where rec players can enjoy themselves is literally the worst thing for the game. far better to shut them out and ensure they can't talk to anyone.

we need a studious and passive aggressive table vibe to make poker great again

They can’t see that the ignoring of fellow players hurts their hourly. They just don’t get it.

That’s certainly true for some players but there are also a lot of guys who know that and are OK with it.

I once had a conversation about that with a live pro and he asked me how much I thought him watching Netflix on his iPad the whole time hurt his bottom line and I told him “I really have no idea, maybe 10%?” to which he responded something along the lines of “don’t you think a lot of people with a boring desk job would be super excited to give up 10% of their salary if that meant they could watch Netflix all day?”. Hard to argue with that.

If playing 1-2 NL had a base salary of $50k maybe. But most 1-2 full-timers are break even players or worse. Slim margins these days. Pointless and expensive to treat your customers poorly. Recs aren’t stupid. They just want to have a good time. Engage them and make more money.

Its easy to argue with that. He doesn't have a boring desk job with a set salary. And LOL @ him thinking he knows its 10%. There is no way to actually calculate it.

I'd guess it's more than 10% when players being on a tablet costs the table multiple rec players replaced by tighter players.

I totally agree on the parasite part, 100%. Not sure how much he really loses directly, in lots of games the tablet players get the same action as everyone else.

Long run that obviously hurts the bottom line of everybody, the question is just if he’s off worse than other players.

But you see, its not just about action. But having the game be fun and social. Lots of poker players know they aren't the best, but its fun for them. Headphones, netflix make the game boring and to a rec with a good job that just wants to have fun, it can get to the point he would rather play blackjack or something.

Apparently you've never been sitting next to someone that just won't shut up and leave you alone. Therefore, you never played live poker.

If you have to concentrate THAT hard to win at low stakes, you are the rec player. I can see someone doing that for a window of time trying to grind and move up but if you can't win if you chat and engage a little bit then you should seriously reconsider poker for any other reason than entertainment.
