I agree. It's also not like you can watch the race from the grandstand the way you would watch a football game. You see what's happening in front of you and, depending on your location, what's up and down the road. For everything else you rely on a second screen anyway. Very different from an oval course like the Las Vegas Speedway.
I have a very distinct memory from being at a race (probably late 80s) where, after no car had passed for a couple minutes, people figured there must have been an accident somewhere.
