Zion is worth a day trip. There are several hikes that are amazing. If you are in decent shape and looking for one of the most interesting hikes I have ever done try the Narrows. Google it and you wont be disappointed. One of my favorite national parks. My wife and I left about 6 am got there about 10 am. You go from PDT to MDT so you lose an hour. We hiked until about 6 and got back to Vegas around 9pm.

Red Rock Canyon is just minutes west of Vegas and is surprisingly beautiful with some spectacular views. Lots of hiking trails too.

Lol, that's some range.

If Hertz rents me a a Mercedes-Benz by accident (this has happened) I'm willing to play the part of a high roller. My own car is badly in need of a paint job -- I'm mostly ashamed to valet it -- but there are exceptions. I have had angry looks from valets when I didn't tip up front (Westgate, I'm looking at you). Or maybe they were pissed off that I valeted the beater.

The Walgreens between the Venetian and Palazzo has just about anything anyone would need and it isn't far from the Wynn and or Trump. There is a CVS on the southwest corner of Las Vegas Blvd and Sands which would be closer to Trump, but I haven't shopped there.

I would not rent from Budget at the airport. They jack up the prices way over what it shows on the website hoping the tired travellers don't notice or don't care. Maybe you can somehow prepay and lock in a cheap deal that kinda screws them, but then you still be get an obnoxious guilt trip about not buying the insurance and upsells. Check out the horrible reviews on Yelp.

I had rentals set up with Payless and EZ. Both were ~$100 total for 5 days with a full size. Ended up with Payless and got an Altima with 400 miles on it. I told them my wife was an insurance agent to save time on the insurance hard sell.

Driving around the strip sucked. Cabbies think they’re Indy drivers, tourist are clueless (me included). Everyone seems to think parking structures are race tracks.

Google maps takes you to the casino, not the casino parking. This means it always wants to take you down the strip instead of the more convenient side routes. Parking signage is almost non-existent. First time in forever that I would have preferred a map.

Wynn parking was good. Trump valet was good. Caesar’s and Planet Hollywood parking are a walk away from the strip.

MGM parking charges really defeats having a car as it costs as much as a cab. Thought I might get around it by doing valet. I was charged $13 for about an 1.5 hours of parking at the Mirage.

On the good side, took a drive out to Valley of Fire State Park which was a nice little adventure. 45 minutes one way, then about 2 hours of mostly driving through it. Also went out to Red Rock and downtown which were nice excursions.

Overall, I don’t think I’ll rent a car again in Vegas.

This is a good point. Their prices are OK.

We did stop at a Smith's grocery store south of the strip for our initial buy. It's only a couple minutes from the airport.

Can't say you were not warned

"Vegas is not an easy city to drive in- the strip is full of taxis that cannot drive, tourists that do not know where they are going and drunks that do not obey crosswalks. Get to know roads like Industrial, Dean Martin, Frank Sinatra and Koval."

Glad you has a safe trip, I am just waiting for the day something stupid happens when I rent a car in Vegas.

Go to trader Joes or walmart. Order a fridge into your room and use that to store meat while you make sandwiches.

Don't forget to ask the maids if they have their green cards!

Renting at the airport, you get gigged by the airport concession fees. It may not be the rental company that's at fault. I rented a car once where the charges were about $50 and the airport fees and taxes were $60.

As for MGM parking fees, the best way to avoid them is not not patronize MGM properties! In the long run this may also help to convince them to drop the fees. If you're a first time tourist I can see where that can be hard to do.

As for back roads, they really aren't that hard to figure out. Get a good map or ask the locals. Ironically the Wynn is one of my least favorite garages because you have to go on the Strip to get there. Since they moved the poker room it's not nearly as convenient any more. All the CET properties, Mirage, TI, and Venetian can be driven to on back roads.

Since I drink a lot and am usually on a motorcycle, I've given up driving in Vegas.

With the advent of Uber, it is a wonderful thing not to worry about parking, traffic, crashes, valet or a DUI.

Okay, one east side of the Vegas: there is a arco gas station with cheap gas. And near by there is a Von's and a Walmart. Google it. I like spending an hour in the morning to fill up my supplies from there. And in NV there is less tax compare to California

I will add my update to this. I was just back in Vegas for a long weekend and used Lyft to get around. It really works well.

First there is a $50 off code which is $5 off per ride for 10 rides.
Wait times were 3 to 6 minutes.
Drivers are much nicer and drive normally as opposed to race car cab drivers.
The cost is about 1/2 of a taxi.

The only negative is that the large casino's only allow ride share pickup in their secondary areas, which can be difficult to find at times.
