That's why I asked. I always figured there was some master code to get in these safes. What that means is, your valuables are safe up to the point of the honesty of employees with that master code. One ticked off employee that gets fired and knows the code and the "secret" is no longer safe.
If a cleaning maid ever got that code think about how easy it would be to steal and not get caught. A dumb thief would open the safe and steal an iPad or jewelry. A smart thief would look for cash and take a small amount. Say you've got $1,000 in there and they take $50 or $100. You'd count it later and figure you must have miscounted it. You'd never think that someone opened the safe and only stole a small percentage of the money. Even if you were 100% sure how much money you had in there, how unconvincing is your story going to be when you tell the hotel manager that you had $1,000 and now you only have $900 or $950?
The good news is most thieves are greedy and dumb and they will steal it all which gives your story a little more believability. Not that the hotel will do much but a couple stories like that and they might at least investigate.
