Day 3 – A little VP, Milos and we finally play some poker
Wifey has to fly out today, so we start off by heading to the pool to get some morning sun.
After about 20 minutes we are both already turning into lobsters, so we head inside to grab the delicious Milos lunch deal. This is still the best value lunch deal on the strip IMO, and considering the prices of dinner at Milos, it’s a steal. We always get the octopus supplement, it is for sure the best octopus I’ve ever had. Having recently been in Greece eating octopus daily for 2 weeks straight at very good restaurants, Milos is still way more tender than anywhere. The fava bean puree is awesome too, but all I can ever think is some G6PD deficient person will come in and start hemolyzing.
Octopus and fava bean puree. Amazing!
Wifey's souvlaki was solid
Lavraki - Very good, but a bit on the dry side these days. Had it again the next day and same problem.
After lunch, we have about an hour before Mrs. Ferguson has to head to the airport, so we head to play a little Top Dollar and VP before she leaves.
She starts off by getting a little bink on the $1 Top Dollar, the heads to the Powerhouse Poker. We were playing the powerhouse poker on VP.com at home and any time you get a dealt pat hand, you get additional hands, as well as multipliers on some of those hands. Eg. Dealt trips you get 9 extra hands with multipliers. The better the dealt pat hand, the more extra hands and multipliers (see below). Last trip we tried the triple play version and there were no multipliers like at home. The key is that you have to be playing 5 or 10 play to get the multipliers, not triple. This resulted in us playing a lot more Powerhouse this trip.
After some powerhouse we play a little bonus poker and I get this dealt.
I was playing 5 cent bonus poker, so this was a 1K hit, but I can only imagine if I was playing DDB (5K) or TDB (10K) as I was dealt the kicker. I can see Leon puking when if reads this.
Two hands later I hold Q10 suited and get…
For about 30 minutes of total play between these machines, we managed to win on every single one, and are up about $1700 for the morning. I was on the fence about playing the WSOP Monster Stack, but now might as well since it’s a freeroll.
I say goodbye to wifey and she heads back to the airport, while I head over to the Rio to hop into the Monster. My short history with this event is that 2 years ago I played because my buddy Scott Davies told me it’s the softest tournament of the year. I hate NL tourneys and was playing only mix events that summer (which I bricked all of). I figured what the hell, hopped in and ended up being the day 2 chip leader at dinner break. I was also dressed up as Catbug from bravest warriors and punished the whole bubble period. It was hilarious. Ended up busting in 200th on day 3, but it was a lot of fun.
I late reg’d halfway through level 5 and played a total of 0 hands in two orbits at the first table before it broke.
I move to a new table (seat 10) where I recognize Upeshka da Silva (seat 4) and Frankie Flowers (seat 1). I didn’t know who Flowers was at the time, but he had a massive stack for only being 5 levels in, maybe 80+k from 15k starting stack.
The 2nd hand at the table, Pesh opens to 650 (150/300/50), folds to me and I flat Ah9s in BB. Flop 975r, Pesh c-bets 1200, call. Turn Qs he bets 2925 with only 4500 behind, I fold. Clearly way too tight, but just getting my feet wet. I also then see Pesh open every unopened pot for the next hour and really regret the fold lol.
Next relevant hand, playing 12k eff, Pesh opens utg1 to 600, I go 1900 with TT on btn. SB (Flowers) flats and Pesh folds. Flop 832r, he open jams, I call and he has Ks8s. WTF. I hold and double up to about 25k.
Seeing this play style, I know that this Flowers guy is a supreme punter now. He later had the chip lead in both the Monster stack and the Main Event this year, but there was no way he wouldn’t be able to punt off in both events (he did). His Main Event punt was epic this year.
Next hand
200/400/50, 25k eff.
Open HJ 800 with KhJh, Btn (euro pro) 2500, call. Flop Ah2h2c
x/2500/call
Turn Ks
x/4200/call
River 6c
x/x, MHIG.
All good, played a couple of hands before dinner and go from 15k to about 34k. We head over to Sapporo revolving sushi for a quick snack and then I get moved to a new table when I get back. Compared to the previous table with Pesh and Frankie, this is a table with a bunch of nits who obviously registered on time and no one has busted in 6 hours. Now they’re all pretty short and will proceed to mostly bustout over the next hour.
The good news is the only big stack is a rec on my immediate right (I’m in seat 3) and I will try to collect all of his 70k stack over the next 4 hours. The bad news is I get an awful table once players start busting. They are replaced by Steve Billirakis (seat 5) who has about 100k, Sam Stein (seat 1) and another guy who is wearing his bracelet (lol) in seat 6. Pretty crappy table draw for day 1 of the Monster stack.
Prior to all of this turnover, I am playing against a table full of nits though so I loosen up my CO opening range a bit in this hand.
Next hand 250/500/75
I open CO 1100 with 87o. Btn calls.
Flop 7cTsJs, I check-call 1200
Turn 9h, bink. Check/check
River Ad, I bet 3700, mhig vs J10cc
Doing work
The next playable hand comes when I open 99 to 1100, get 4 callers, including a super nit lady. Flop comes 753cc, I c-bet 3k, there is a call and then nit lady shoves for about 30k and I can easily fold to her probable set.
I then bust a couple of shorties with KK>AKcc for 13k and QQ>88 for 15k.
At this point our table is actually super fun and everyone is chatting and making fun of each other and having a good time. As a result I forget to write down any more hands. I do remember winning one big hand vs. the big stack rec on my right for about 50k+ with AQ>A10 where I 3-bet pre and got three streets of value on an A23QT runout. He busted shortly thereafter.
At the end of the night I bagged about 130k in 5.5 hours and had a great time.
Headed back to Cosmo for a little VP with the rest of the group and got one good hit plus one of the only 4 to a Royal draws of the trip.
No Royal!
Now that I’ve bagged and tagged, have to control myself, get a good night’s sleep and head back to crush day 2. Unfortunately there's nothing really to eat right now and I don't want to wait in line at Secret Pizza for 45 mins. Head back to the room hungry but find this little present for my bedtime snack.
