Happy Canada Day, and +1 to all of the praise for this TR. It took me a couple of days to get through, because I have to go research each restaurant or new term, so very enjoyable.

What are your favorite spots on the strip or close by for happy hour? Looking for small plates that could serve as an early dinner for smaller appetites, plus good cocktail specials. I've got a good list going, but interested in your take.

Time to highjack your TR since its also my TR.

TurdFerg got me addicted to highstakes VP, so naturally I in turn got my GF addicted to VP. Here she is with a $600 cookie, an old fashioned, and a VP cheatsheet. This would be the beginning of a long love-hate relationship.

While Turd was stuck on the tarmac, I sent him this lovely pic and asked him what I should keep. It's a tough call between keeping the deuce for the majestic made hand jingle or throwing it away for 12x vibrating monster sounds.

Joel Robuchon

I also wanted to add some of my dishes at JR.

This green pea veloute was close to The Egg™ as my favorite course. Sweet soup with a salty foamy; great textures and flavors.

More watermelon + crab! Very fun dish.

The Egg™. I cannot add any words to how Turd describes this dish. Part of the enjoyment of eating The Egg™ is listening to Turd repeated gush over it. Our set menu came with two appetizers, and Turd was tempted to order two orders of The Egg™, lawl.

Miso black cod course. I love (miso) black cod. I remember this dish being amazing. But not as good as Nobu miso black cod. (Note: everything else at Nobu isn't that great)

Wagyu beef cheek with two types of eggplant.

Beef ribeye with foie ravioli.

Sadly these last two dishes didn't wow me. That may be because I'm Albertan and have developed a taste of how I like my beef. Looking through Turd's pics, I'm kinda jealous I didn't order better mains. The free(?) gelato meringue cake was also freaking amazing and deserves more props.

Overall, the bread cart is whack. The mignardise cart is whack. There's also a cheese cart we never got around to. The best thing to do is to order two courses and load up on the cartfuls of goodies. WHY DIDN'T WE GO FOR 2 COURSES? Blargh!

Thanks for posting the extra pics of your dishes. I really wanted to try that green pea veloute too, I have a special love for that dish (not JR's, but good green pea veloute in general).

As per our suggestion to Phunk and our other dining mate, the best value at JR is without a doubt doing the two course meal (one app + one main) and then eating tons of delicious bread and mignardises. You can add the cheese course for $35 on top if you are still hungry. The cheese course is awesome, it also comes in cart form and you can have as much as you want.

I'll get to work on day 2 of the TR.

I'm probably not the best person to answer this. Usually my happy hour/pre-dinner drinking is at a poker table or VP machine and then I head out for a full meal.

Agree with Mandarin Bar, but I should ask what your list is so far.

Thanks for the kind words.

Day 2 – More Hood Rat Games and Kabuto

Wifey nicely goes to the pool for a few hours in the morning while I sleep an extra couple of hours. She went to bed about 3 hours before the rest of us.

Wifey also really wants Yardbird chicken and somehow I decide a super hungover walk down to the Venetian is a good idea. Nothing like walking on the surface of the sun while dehydrated, it’s a balmy 45 Celsius (read: hot AF) outside.

I must say that despite the hangover, I still really enjoyed this, and the chicken and waffle platter with watermelon is a perfect two person meal. You’ll both be stuffed. They make some good cocktails too, I probably should have had one, would have sobered up much faster. Instead we each had $5 diet cokes lol, that’s for a small bottle. Classic fish move.

Since we’ve already walked half the strip, we decide to meander over to the Wynn just to take a look and also say hi to Leon’s machines.

I can feel the Leon energy in the Wynn that day and see a slot tournament going on. I wonder if he and his dad are in it? We stop by the hi limit VP and I see two Asian gentlemen, one helping the other get around. Is it Leon? They aren’t playing anything so I can’t use TDB UX to identify them.

We put in a few hundred on Leon’s machines and manage to miss one premium draw. Always get big draws on Leon’s machines, but yet to hit one. Probably about break even lifetime on them.

It’s already about 4 pm so we don’t have much time until dinner at Kabuto at 6. We head back to the Cosmo and dabble a little at the Ultimate X, and get a few little hits. We’re not playing TDB, which would have made this huge. Maybe a lesson? We actually hit a lot of hands this trip that would have been monsters on DDB or TDB, maybe I need to change over.

Time for Kabuto. With parties of 7 or more they require that you do the $80 or $120 set menus, and can’t just do the $48 nigiri menu. We went with the $80 knowing that we’d be adding lots of fish on.

Housemade pineapple sake

Bonito

L->R Tuna, Fluke, Clam and Oyster. Always find the oyster incredible, and the clam was excellent today too.

Mailly Champagne mag - Because champagne is delicious

Cooked courses

L->R Uni, forget, red tuna, snapper
Awesome snapper, I found the red tuna and chutoro to be a bit metallic today. Been having that problem a lot lately with tuna, they taste a bit like iron. Wifey gets the same flavor as well.

L->R Egg, salmon roe, chu-toro and mackerel.
Great roe and mackerel, chu-toro metallic and egg is always their weakest link.

Add-on nigiri - 2 kamashi-ta (best tuna they serve IMO), harasu (trout belly), anago (eel), akamutsu (red seaperch) and some tai (snapper)
All were great, really loved the tuna and seaperch and think that trout belly is criminally underrated, maybe the best value fish there is.

The degenya-team

Kama****a cheers!

Aburi-toro - Seared tuna is good but I think it takes away from the fish quality and texture.

Miso, missed the handroll photo, but it was a bomb otoro handroll.

Japanese cheesecake - always excellent.

Another fantastic Kabuto dinner and the 3rd time I’ve eaten at Kabuto or Yui while Dan Smith is there lol. I think he’s there most days.

Back to the hood rat games. Really this is fueled by the wifey and our buddy Ray. They love shiny machines. I’m fine with it since they’re racking up tier points and having an awesome time. Plus they’re winning to boot.

They start off with a little Top Dollar. The history of Top Dollar is that Ray introduced us to it once at Bellagio, then we played all the machines at the B before going to Aria and we hit a bunch of top dollars en route. So now we just run around screaming “Top dolla makes you holla, Top dolla makes you holla” and smashing these things.

They get a nice little bink and then move on to pinball. I missed one good hit at $5, then they got a nice little one at $2.

After that Ray and wifey played a bunch more hood rat slots and actually ran pretty good, probably break even when all was said and done. The rest of us ate cookies, drank and got on a little VP grind.

After being slotted out, wifey is ready for Hot Roll poker, which is basically a Super Times Pay type game, where they roll dice to determine your multiplier either before or after the hold. But the most important thing is the music! On any multiplier of 10-12x, the machine says “Hot Roll” and puts on some salsa music. Multiplier 2-9x don’t do this. So when wifey rolls the 10x, everyone just bursts into dance in the hi limit room and it is hilarious. I have a video of it, but too ridiculous to post. It was incredible.

The funny part is the 10x hit didn’t even win much money, but it probably was at least 5-10 thousand in +dancing EV. Here's an immediate post hot roll dance pic where everyone is laughing their asses off.

We then go and get a few wheel spins at the monthly promo for Cosmo. Every 5k points gets you a wheel spin, with the max being $500 free play and most prizes being in the $10-50 range. Wifey spun for $10 and I managed to hit a $50. Meh.

The funniest part was one guy who came up and spun 5 times, hitting $500 on one of them. We’re all drunk and cheering for him, while he is just looking disgruntled like he’s probably down 50k for his trip and this is completely insignificant. I’ll take it if you don’t want it buddy.

In the next part we’ll have a bit more VP, but then actually get to playing some real poker again when I hop into the WSOP Monster Stack to go looking for a bracelet.

Cheers,

TF

More Kabuto goodness:

(FYI: snapper + miso; blue crab + mushroom; ocean trout + clam sauce)

(O-toro hand roll. The quality of the nori and rice really stands out)

(Anago, kamashi-ta, silky tuna, giant clam;
Heart-shell clam; botan-ebi; baby snapper)

Day 3 – A little VP, Milos and we finally play some poker

Wifey has to fly out today, so we start off by heading to the pool to get some morning sun.

After about 20 minutes we are both already turning into lobsters, so we head inside to grab the delicious Milos lunch deal. This is still the best value lunch deal on the strip IMO, and considering the prices of dinner at Milos, it’s a steal. We always get the octopus supplement, it is for sure the best octopus I’ve ever had. Having recently been in Greece eating octopus daily for 2 weeks straight at very good restaurants, Milos is still way more tender than anywhere. The fava bean puree is awesome too, but all I can ever think is some G6PD deficient person will come in and start hemolyzing.

Octopus and fava bean puree. Amazing!

Wifey's souvlaki was solid

Lavraki - Very good, but a bit on the dry side these days. Had it again the next day and same problem.

After lunch, we have about an hour before Mrs. Ferguson has to head to the airport, so we head to play a little Top Dollar and VP before she leaves.

She starts off by getting a little bink on the $1 Top Dollar, the heads to the Powerhouse Poker. We were playing the powerhouse poker on VP.com at home and any time you get a dealt pat hand, you get additional hands, as well as multipliers on some of those hands. Eg. Dealt trips you get 9 extra hands with multipliers. The better the dealt pat hand, the more extra hands and multipliers (see below). Last trip we tried the triple play version and there were no multipliers like at home. The key is that you have to be playing 5 or 10 play to get the multipliers, not triple. This resulted in us playing a lot more Powerhouse this trip.

After some powerhouse we play a little bonus poker and I get this dealt.

I was playing 5 cent bonus poker, so this was a 1K hit, but I can only imagine if I was playing DDB (5K) or TDB (10K) as I was dealt the kicker. I can see Leon puking when if reads this.
Two hands later I hold Q10 suited and get…

Spoiler:

For about 30 minutes of total play between these machines, we managed to win on every single one, and are up about $1700 for the morning. I was on the fence about playing the WSOP Monster Stack, but now might as well since it’s a freeroll.

I say goodbye to wifey and she heads back to the airport, while I head over to the Rio to hop into the Monster. My short history with this event is that 2 years ago I played because my buddy Scott Davies told me it’s the softest tournament of the year. I hate NL tourneys and was playing only mix events that summer (which I bricked all of). I figured what the hell, hopped in and ended up being the day 2 chip leader at dinner break. I was also dressed up as Catbug from bravest warriors and punished the whole bubble period. It was hilarious. Ended up busting in 200th on day 3, but it was a lot of fun.

I late reg’d halfway through level 5 and played a total of 0 hands in two orbits at the first table before it broke.

I move to a new table (seat 10) where I recognize Upeshka da Silva (seat 4) and Frankie Flowers (seat 1). I didn’t know who Flowers was at the time, but he had a massive stack for only being 5 levels in, maybe 80+k from 15k starting stack.

The 2nd hand at the table, Pesh opens to 650 (150/300/50), folds to me and I flat Ah9s in BB. Flop 975r, Pesh c-bets 1200, call. Turn Qs he bets 2925 with only 4500 behind, I fold. Clearly way too tight, but just getting my feet wet. I also then see Pesh open every unopened pot for the next hour and really regret the fold lol.

Next relevant hand, playing 12k eff, Pesh opens utg1 to 600, I go 1900 with TT on btn. SB (Flowers) flats and Pesh folds. Flop 832r, he open jams, I call and he has Ks8s. WTF. I hold and double up to about 25k.

Seeing this play style, I know that this Flowers guy is a supreme punter now. He later had the chip lead in both the Monster stack and the Main Event this year, but there was no way he wouldn’t be able to punt off in both events (he did). His Main Event punt was epic this year.

Next hand
200/400/50, 25k eff.
Open HJ 800 with KhJh, Btn (euro pro) 2500, call. Flop Ah2h2c
x/2500/call
Turn Ks
x/4200/call
River 6c
x/x, MHIG.

All good, played a couple of hands before dinner and go from 15k to about 34k. We head over to Sapporo revolving sushi for a quick snack and then I get moved to a new table when I get back. Compared to the previous table with Pesh and Frankie, this is a table with a bunch of nits who obviously registered on time and no one has busted in 6 hours. Now they’re all pretty short and will proceed to mostly bustout over the next hour.

The good news is the only big stack is a rec on my immediate right (I’m in seat 3) and I will try to collect all of his 70k stack over the next 4 hours. The bad news is I get an awful table once players start busting. They are replaced by Steve Billirakis (seat 5) who has about 100k, Sam Stein (seat 1) and another guy who is wearing his bracelet (lol) in seat 6. Pretty crappy table draw for day 1 of the Monster stack.

Prior to all of this turnover, I am playing against a table full of nits though so I loosen up my CO opening range a bit in this hand.
Next hand 250/500/75
I open CO 1100 with 87o. Btn calls.
Flop 7cTsJs, I check-call 1200
Turn 9h, bink. Check/check
River Ad, I bet 3700, mhig vs J10cc

Doing work

The next playable hand comes when I open 99 to 1100, get 4 callers, including a super nit lady. Flop comes 753cc, I c-bet 3k, there is a call and then nit lady shoves for about 30k and I can easily fold to her probable set.

I then bust a couple of shorties with KK>AKcc for 13k and QQ>88 for 15k.

At this point our table is actually super fun and everyone is chatting and making fun of each other and having a good time. As a result I forget to write down any more hands. I do remember winning one big hand vs. the big stack rec on my right for about 50k+ with AQ>A10 where I 3-bet pre and got three streets of value on an A23QT runout. He busted shortly thereafter.

At the end of the night I bagged about 130k in 5.5 hours and had a great time.

Headed back to Cosmo for a little VP with the rest of the group and got one good hit plus one of the only 4 to a Royal draws of the trip.

Spoiler:

No Royal!

Now that I’ve bagged and tagged, have to control myself, get a good night’s sleep and head back to crush day 2. Unfortunately there's nothing really to eat right now and I don't want to wait in line at Secret Pizza for 45 mins. Head back to the room hungry but find this little present for my bedtime snack.

Lemon raspberry. It was really excellent.

The long story is that last time we went to JR, we got this awesome pistachio/raspberry or cherry bread as our parting gift, and you're supposed to get 1 loaf per couple. I had a bite of the bread and it was amazing, but wifey then put it down in the airport on our way out of Vegas, and forgot to pick it up.

So for the last 5 years, any time we talk about JR, I always bring up my missing pistachio bread and how I long for it.

We recounted this story to our server this time and as a result every person at the table got a loaf of awesome bread. And we remembered to eat all of both loaves this time!
