Elon Musk gets approval for LV underground tunnel

"The billionaire's Boring Company on Tuesday got the approval from the 14-member board of the Las Vegas Convention and Visitors Authority (LVCVA) to build and operate an underground loop that would carry people in autonomous electric vehicles at the city's convention center."

"The project will potentially connect downtown Las Vegas, the convention center, the Las Vegas Boulevard Resort Corridor, McCarran International Airport and more...."

"LVCVA estimates the loop system cost to be between $35 and $55 million, according to LVCVA's release."

Remember this is in a county where they couldn't even get the Strip monorail approved to connect to the airport.

All they really seem to talking about is transportation between the Convention center and the area at the former Riviera where they will expand.

Re: Elon Musk gets approval for LV underground tunnel

35-55 million seems crazy low for this. If that's all it takes to put in underground tunnels connecting everything, why didn't Steve Wynn or anybody shake out some loose pocket change and do this years ago?

The autonomous vehicles themselves seem mostly irrelevant. put any kind of vehicle or train or walkalators, whatever.

yea, they are building Elon's CES 2021 exhibit. they're talking 35 to 55 mil just for a tiny little loop that goes from convention center to the riv and back?

hope the city isn't paying for any of that. the article probably would have mentioned it, which i guess means all they are giving him is permission and not any money.

55 mil for a tiny useless loop - so how much to link up the strip, downtown, and the airport? a billion? will never ever happen!

Re: Elon Musk gets approval for LV underground tunnel

BS.

It will cost more than $55 million just to prepare construction plans, obtain the required easements, relocate all the underground utilities, reroute the sewers, and pay off the politicians - and that's before construction even starts.

they won't have to re-route anything, the tunnel goes below everything

My hometown just spent significantly over a billion for 2 miles of underground public transportation.

35-55mil seems ridiculously low, even for a very short loop.

It probably doesn't include the boring costs, which Musk will eat. It is likely self-serving for Musk, plus is an experiment/demonstration of Musk's autonomous technology. At least he won't be crashing into cars in LV traffic.

Musk also might need to get his fix for playing fast and loose with numbers/facts from somewhere else than Tesla now. Here, the SEC can’t punish him for making up stuff.

Re: Elon Musk gets approval for LV underground tunnel

This is the prototype that they tested in LA a few months ago:

https://jalopnik.com/heres-what-driv...-tu-1831192500

The low cost won’t be a surprise once you see what they delivered here. It was just a bumpy tunnel where you drive your modified Tesla, even though earlier plans talked about a skate that carries a car at high speed, or a people mover sort of underground bus. Neither of those things happened. It was unclear from the Vegas article what this plan calls for, but let’s assume for now it won’t be revolutionary.

Re: Elon Musk gets approval for LV underground tunnel

Emergency exits.

Ventilation.

Electric service.

Lighting.

Emergency access to remove blockages, vehicular or otherwise.

Getting vehicles and/or people into and out of the tunnel - one at a time or more than one at a time.

One way travel back and forth or "two lanes".

One car at a time or multi.

Emergency generators.

Emergency generator fuel, siting, maintenance, permitting...

The list would be even longer with continued thought.

All doable.

Nothing that hasn't been done before.

But not for 50 mil.

The LVCVA probably already owns all the land involved, so easements would not be a problem.

"The politicians" are the LVCVA.

The reaction from Sheldon might be interesting however. He competes with the LVCVA in the convention business.

Forget the airport link-up, it did not happen for the monorail. (fwiw, the LVCVA should have taken care of that bck in the day.)

Forget downtown link up, that was puffery.

So, $55 million for a short trolley like system seems reasonable, but WHY put it underground if the LVCA already owns the land ? The boring seems like added cost, unless Elon is footing the bill somehow.

If it works it wins him a ton of positive interest at CES 2021. I just don't think they can do it well and in time for that conference.

Delivering on time and what had been promised? No worries, Elon Musk is world-famous for doing that..

I thought the same thing about the budget. If they can connect downtown, the airport, and the strip for 55M that is a no brainer. IMO the weak point of Vegas is transportation. There are many places tourists want to go and it isn't easy to get around. Well it isn't torture either but whenever I go to Vegas I am always reminded how spread out everything is and how much walking is involved. Travelling underground also helps protect against the heat which is a big deal in Vegas.

Downtown to airport via Strip is a 5 mile tunnel that’s certainly going to cost significantly over a billion.

Re: Elon Musk gets approval for LV underground tunnel

I don't understand his company... what is the point of building a roadway system if there is only 2-3 stops and they're monuments and primarily used by tourists??? Subways or underground trains are logically more efficient.

As an aside to the budget issue our city just finished a courthouse that final cost came in at 10 times original budget... can't remember a situation where a government estimate wasn't lower then actual cost.

I believe it originated in LA, where Musk lives. He was sick of the traffic so he thought it would be a good idea to go underneath the traffic.

it's different from a subway or a train - you drive your everyday car on to a sled inside of an elevator. the elevator takes your car underground and then the sled, carrying your car, fires through the tunnel at 200+ mph.

he could make money from it by charging a toll.

flying cars would be optimal but going under the traffic is a good second best option.
