A 130-acre extreme sports park called The Edge, by Australian developer Josh Kearney, secured unanimous approval from commissioners in Clark County. The $800 million Las Vegas project will feature a 15-story hotel-casino, manmade whitewater rapids, cable wake-boarding lakes, an indoor mountain-biking track, a skydiving attraction and more.

Location will be the corner of Sunset and Las Vegas Blvd.

No completion date set as of today..

That's pretty awesome news, sounds like lots of fun! I remember somebody talking about a development plan for an action sports crowd centered resort one or two years ago, I guess that's it?

I guess it's going to be on the North West corner of Sunset and LV Blvd.? The other 3 corners are occupied by the airport, that golfing facility and sports center, and Town Square?

they will probably just demolish the par 3 course

Hopefully the sportsbook will be worth the resort fee!

Hopefully the airport will sign off on this idea, it is at the end of the runway ... either corner, there is a reason historically why that par 3 was allowed on one and the Bali Hai course on the other runway.

(I used to represent a casino resort where Town Square is now located on the SW corner.

.... )

It's approved for the southeast corner of Sunset/LV Blvd. That golf place is there now. I believe it's part of the parcel.

there's also that sports complex on the East. To build a 130 acres resort, they would either have to replace that one or go down South almost to 215?

The parcel is more than double the size of the stadium lot so I suspect there is some assemblage. It could be all of the above.

My understanding is pretty dated, but the land right by the corner is at the end of the runway used about 15% of the time. Perhaps that's where the manmade whitewater rapids, cable wake-boarding lakes and maybe parking will be?

Otherwise, there used to be height and use restrictions in place there although Calloway put the par 3 course there because golf was allowed.

If they can get it zoned/built this is a good location.

Seems like a dumb idea to me. Who likes to run and jump around and show off, but generally has little money? Young people. Who likes to show off by throwing money around needlessly? Old people.

Sounds like the best idea to hit Vegas in a long time, IMO.

Old people gamble and eventually die, that's not what Vegas resorts want to focus on going forward. Young people pay $15 (=AUS$19) for avocado toast instead of buying houses. Most old people don't even want to spend $6 on a coffee at Starbucks and don't have to go to Vegas anymore because they can gamble way closer to home these days.

IIRC, gambling accounted for only roughly 1/3 of the revenue at Strip casinos last year, compared to something close to 2/3 over 30 years ago. Downtown casinos made 3/4 of their revenue from gambling in the early 80s. I think that number dropped below 50% for the first time last year.

The average nightclub guest is obv. younger than the average slot machine gambler, but even at fine dining restaurants the average customer looks significantly younger than the average person on the casino floor.

Still can't believe they remade that movie. Great movie with not so subtle capitalism criticism gets a ****ty remake strictly for financial reasons.

They could make some extra dough by building a resort hospital for all the drunk guys who thought riding a mountainbike sounded like a really good idea.

I think anything new and novel is good for Vegas.

Each casino has become a carbon copy of the one next door save for a different facade. What is really different from Paris to Excalibur? In large part the casinos are identical in what they offer for entertainment and just have a different theme.

The town needs to mix it up. What about some backgammon? **** I dunno I am just spitballing. The pool and club scene was a great addition to keep Vegas vibrant over the past 10 or so years.

Any new event or new activity is a plus for LV.

Adding the Raiders and that NHL team with the less-catchy name will help the Las Vegas brand for entertainment.

Recreational marijuana is a new added amenity, one which the State is considering allowing for casino properties.

I agree that the casino floors are largely stagnant, switching from one themed slot machine to adding another themed slot machine is something driven by machine manufacturers who are looking to stay relevant but have little to offer as entertainment moves to a mobile, community environment and away from centralized locations, like a casino floor for example.

The MGM campaign to sell entertainment as the brand is a step forward.

(Some past classic missteps included the WWE-themed casino, the monorail which does not reach the airport, and I expect the idea that people really want to ride a ferris wheel for >30 minutes because they can get alcohol and not much else...

The implosion and massive two year construction project of an Arab-themed hotel that opened a year before 9/11 occurred.

The Alladin ? .... which did reopen in 2000 and has since been replaced by Planet Hollywood,? That venture has doomed by a lot of longstanding factors, but I don't think the Alladin theme suddenly was a significant factor because of 9/11.

If you want to look beyond Las Vegas on that poor choice of branding theme, there was an online gaming venture launched a few years ago with much fanfare, unfortunately branded internationally as ISIS Gaming (about 2013)

There was press at the time that suggested it. It wasn't necessarily a bad choice, just bad timing. They didn't know what was going to happen a year later.

Oh, I thought the Aladdin was older than that. It seemed kind of run down the first time I went to Vegas in 2005 or so.

The old Aladdin was imploded in 98ish. It was around for a long time. I remember a Gambling Times article from the 70's or 80's describing the battle Wayne Newton had with Johnny Carson to acquire it. The new one (current PHo) was built on the same site.
