Even though it wasn't a late night, 4:00 came early...and after a night of terrible sleep. When I have to get up way early in the morning, I tend to toss and turn all night while staring at the clock, worried I'm going to oversleep. I was actually out of bed and into the shower before the alarm had a chance to go off. By the time I made the walk through the Miracle Mile and got to the car it was about 4:45.
The drive up I-15 to Mesquite wasn't bad at that hour, and I even got to watch the sunrise!
Got to the course at 6:20, about 50 minutes before my 7:10 tee time. I took my time getting my mess together and heading inside to get checked in and pay. What's this I spy? Titleist hats in two colors I don't have yet? Can't let that happen
As I'm getting ready to head to the range to go through my usual 20-25 minute warm up session, they let me know they had a group cancel at 6:40 so they're trying to fill it with later time singles. I'm in!. But now it's already 6:35 and I haven't been to the range yet. Oh well. I head over there long enough to get 8-10 swings on their "irons only" range, and head to the first tee. This is what greets us...
The second tee shot wasn't any less intimidating...
And it continued on that way the whole round.
While the course was challenging, I think I got the better of it today
I played the Champions tees, but probably would've been ok from the tips as length was never really an issue. The biggest problem would've been the hikes needed to get back to them.
On all four par 5's I was right around the green in two, but only got up and down for birdie once, making a 15 footer on #12. That's after missing 4 & 6 footers on #1 & #5. I was 2 for 3 on sand saves, and only had one 3-putt. I did hit an approach wedge to inside 3 feet on #15 for a kick in birdie 2.
The course was pretty unreal. I've played a couple courses with a bigger elevation change on a hole, but never a course with so much elevation change on every hole. The hills are so steep, including the cart paths, you had to sign a waiver before teeing off. I didn't read it close, but I'm sure it was to cover them if you get hurt or tear their **** up. All day long you could hear screeching around the course as peoples brakes were locked up as they were sliding down these cart paths.
The round took 5 hours, which sucked, but their website warns you that'll be the case so I was prepared for it. Hot. Yeah, it was hot. But actually not awful. They were very generous handing out bottles of water, of which I had at least a dozen, and I had cooling towels with me as well. All the waiting we had to do every hole made it a bit worse, but nothing I haven't dealt with before at home.
My biggest gripe about the course was the lack of info they give you. I should've bought a yardage book beforehand but didn't think about it. There were a lot of blind shots off the tee, and approach shots where you had no idea what was going on around the greens.
I'm glad I chose to make the drive up there this morning and I'm looking forward to Paiute Friday morning. Ok, enough golf for now.
