Hey TwoPlusTwo,

So I woke early again this morning. Decided to take it easy for a few hours and write the previous TR which took a little time. On my last trip to Vegas we had gone to the Jazz Brunch Buffet at the Wynn which only runs on Sunday. The place is amazing and super popular so I was a little disappointed when a few weeks ago Martin informed me that according to their website the place was full for the Sunday we would be in Vegas. However, I couldn’t really believe they had been fully booked two weeks in advance so I decided to call them and managed to book a table for two with no worries. So I had booked the buffet for 12pm and at this point with it being around 10am I decided to go down to the Poker room to put an hour or two before to see if I could earn myself a free lunch

I sit down at the standard $1/$2 and fairly on I’m dealt TT in MP. An old guy had limped in EP so I make it $10 to go. The Asian guy with long hair to my direct left calls pretty quickly and the old limper guy also calls and we see a flop three ways. Flop comes 922 which is just about the best flop you can think of for TT which doesn’t a T. When it’s checked to me I cbet $22 and quite interestingly both players call which I wasn’t expecting on such a dry board. Turn wasn’t great I thought as it brought the A but it’s checked by everyone and the river brings a meaningless 3. Checked to me again and I’m debating if I should be going for thin value or not but after a while decide to check and the player to my left also quickly checks. Expecting to have the best hand here very often here I confidently turn over my hand. The old guy across the table flips over what I think is 89 so I'm very surprised when the dealer announces “9s full of deuces” I still didn’t quite believe it so had to stand up to get a proper look at this hand and he did infact have 9s full, I guess scared of Aces full . And the long haired Asian guy to my left mucks Queens face up I think I’m ahead and I’m crushed in both spots haha. Lucky the turn was an Ace I guess as this probably saved me a little.

11:30 rolled around and I decided it was time to start heading to the Wynn for lunch. Ended the session plus $48 for at least half of lunch paid for and started walking through the Palazzo towards the Wynn.

I think I’ve mentioned it before in a previous TR but I think the inside décor of the Wynn is my favorite of any Vegas casino. It’s just such a nicely designed place. Stevey has good taste.

I arrive at the Country Club bang on time and get a table right next to the Jazz band and buffet area overlooking the Golf course. The Jazz band consists of three old and very talented guys. The main singer was wearing a bright red suit, white hate, sunglasses and had a ZZ Top style beard, looked pretty badass when he was playing his sax. The way the Wynn Jazz buffet works is that you can order from a list of foods off the menu and also help yourself to all the amazing foods in the buffet area.

Round one:

Round two (repeat)

Round Three (Wagyu Hot Dog and Mini Cheese burdger from the menu)

Round Four (Hot dog number two and some added shrips)

Round Five and Six - Time for dessert

The food is just amazing, every single dish is great. The service is class, it almost feels like they’re watching you all the time and if you ever need a drink refill or a new knife and folk they’re there within seconds without you having to call them. And the atmosphere and band are also very enjoyable. You can definitely smell the money in a place like that, everyone just looks and acts very rich. Suddenly my $48 win the hour before seemed slightly less balla. Anyway, I took my time at the Country Club but after an hour and a half when I was so full I could barely move I decided leave.

Now the question was what to do as I wasn’t feeling in a great poker mood after all that food. Earlier in the week I’d been handed a ‘Real Bodies’ $5 off voucher for the exhibit at Bally’s. It looked abit freaky and fairly interesting so I decided to head that way to check it out. Jesus Christ! It was hot walking down the strip today, I really can’t imagine how hot it gets here during the summer. Taxis?

I’ve been to Vegas seven times and have maybe worked past Bally’s 100+ times but had never actually been inside. The inside was nothing special, just the same outdated style you’ll see in every ‘cheaper’ hotel on the strip. First thing I do is head over to the Poker room just to have a look. As I arrive I hear a younger guy covered in gold jewelry and tattoos shouting “World Star! Vegas Baby!”. As I edge closer I watch an old guy at the table beat the younger tattooed guy in a pot. Young guy shouts “Take it all baby, take everything I have baby! World star!” Gets up, takes off his gold jewelry, Headphones and sunglasses and hands them to the old guy “Take it baby, put it on”. Old guy actually does what is requested and puts everything on to the enjoyment of the table and the guy with tattoos who is still shouting “Yes baby!” Once the old guy is fully kitted out the younger guy takes out his phone and starts making a Snapchat video with the old guy “Dance baby, one million views!” as the old guy starts doing some odd dance I imagine he thinks young people do. Very next hand the old guy now in full jewelry calls a 4bet shove for $200 with K4 and cracks Jacks. No clue who the guy with tattoos was but he kept saying "follow me baby I'm famous!" Welcome to Bally’s Poker room I thought.

Selfie time

After this I find the Real Bodies exhibit and go inside. Wow, this place was super strange and not sure I’m a big fan. Every room had dissected and mummified bodies doing various things. The bodies weren’t in glass boxes and you could really lean in a get a close look at something which at one point was a living human. I know once you’re dead you no longer need your body but I don’t think I’d be happy knowing my body was on display in Bally’s in Vegas with guys shouting "World Star baby!" across the room.

I walk around for about 45 minutes before I decide it’s time to head back to the Venetian. On the way out of Bally’s I walk past the Craps and it seemed like the atmosphere was great with the tables cheering and hi-fiving each other.

I have a love / hate relationship with Craps. My first two visits to Vegas I just couldn’t lose at the table and just crushed every place I played. But the last four trips the player margin is well and truly being put back in the Casino’s favor and I’ve barley been able to string more than 5 rolls together before “seven and out”. I decide it’s time to give it another whirl this trip to see if the tides have changed back. I flick a crisp Benjamin to the dealer and away we go.

The table had a great vibe and had clearly been having a good winning streak, they didn’t have a clue the Craps jinx had just arrived though. First roll after getting a point was a 7. Next shooter lasted two rolls before getting a 7 and the next shooter was out pretty quickly as well. I had lasted around 7 rolls in total and had paid $200 for the privilege. Certainly a lifetime loser in Craps now but think I’ll have one more craps session before we leave , gotta start running better soon

After the craps I head back to my room for some post Wynn buffet hibernation and after I’m rested head back to the Venetian for a session.

I’d only put in one hour so far today so needed to do at least another 6.5 hours to still be on target for the Poker room rate. I set a countdown on my phone for 6.5 hours and squeezed out my first hand. I’ve decided that playing with a time limit and having a countdown timer is such a bad way to play. I really should just play when I’m feeling good and leave when I want and by having a countdown timer this isn’t possible. I just wasn’t feeling it today, not sure why but I wanted to get the 6.5 hours done ASAP and must of looked at the countdown timer on my phone at least 50 times during the session to see how much time I had left to go. Tbf I think I ran horrendous as well which certainly didn’t help. AA, KK, QQ, JJ and TT all cracked at some point during the night. I had managed to grind some back when I got flush over flushed. The game was actually really good as well, probably the most action table I’ve played so far this trip. I wasn’t enjoying it though and should have just left after second time my aces were cracked after a 12x raise PF and 5 callers. Just appears that it wasn’t meant to be tonight and as soon as the countdown for 6.5 hours went off I instantly left the table minus $457 and booking the first loss of the trip. Had to come eventually I guess. Still being full from the Wynn buffet I skip dinner and headed back to the room around 2am and was so tired fell asleep still fully dressed and with all the lights on haha.

Been an expensive day:
  • Wynn Buffet - ($110)
  • Real Bodies - ($30)
  • Craps - ($200)
  • Two Poker sessions- ($409)

But alot of fun had!

Anyway, till next time, thanks for reading!

Loving this TR. Thanks for taking the time. We'll be there Nov. 2 - 6 and cannot wait. It's interesting you recognize so many of the dealers. We (my husband and I) do too, but we recognize a lot of the players, too. Probably because we play mainly PLO.

Glad you are having fun!

FYI if you find yourself at the SF airport in a similar situation, I believe BART also runs to the Oakland airport, where weather is always much nicer. You would've had to pay extra for a short-notice ticket, but on Southwest you would've gotten credit for your unused ticket. Glad it worked out, at any rate.
If there's other empty rows I would of totally done that.

There is a heat wave moving through the Southwest. It is unusually warm and supposed to cool off soon.

In the past couple of years, they have nearly made it a crime to long haul people. Probably mostly due to the fierce competiton from Uber/Lyft. I don't think you have to worry about that anymore..

Thanks for the kind comment. Hmm, well I do recongise some players but would say 99% of $1/$2 players are new faces and people their on vacation.

Have a great trip when you're here next week

Some stray thoughts:

- I am fascinated by your fascination with Earl of Sandwich. Also they have one in Caesars Palace which is a shorter trip for you, don't know if you're going to that one.

- Oakland Airport is an easier airport than SFO in just about every way, and roughly same distance to downtown SF. Less weather delays there. SFO is notorious for weather delays since it gets fogged in so much.

- I have a PhD in Southwest Airlines seating strategy, so AMA. Basic strategy is this- you go to the back of the plane, but not the last row (leave two or three rows behind you). Take the window seat. When people are walking down the aisle looking for seats, leave your elbow on the armrest and make no eye contact with anyone. My goal is that if there is one seat left open on the plane, it will be the one next to me.

- As soon as you wrote that you might walk across the GG Bridge, I said "he won't" to myself.

Then I consider myself to have a SUPER PhD

Benn traveling for 20 years with the last 16 being on Southwest about 20x trips yer year. My strategy is to take the row right in front of the exit row. I never recline the seat so that doesn't bother me. If there is an empty seat on a plane the chance that it is next to me has been about 80% plus in my lifetime. I run really good when it runs to flights though too, so, basically the exact opposite as OP.

Good TR!

Hey TwoPlusTwo,

So today started out like most of the other days I’ve had this trip. Fully awake after a few hours’ sleep to watch the sunrise come up over the strip from my Venetian suite window. I guess I shouldn’t complain too much as it’s a beautiful site. I spend most of the morning chilling, writing trip reports and answering a few work emails and around midday I start getting my daily Earl cravings. I’d not had an Earl for a day or so now so it was about time to scratch the itch again, Earloholics anonymous might need a visit after this trip. So anyway, I make the 25 minute walk down the strip to Earl and have the never disappointing Holiday Turkey (If anyone has any other suggestions for good sandwiches here I’m up for trying them out btw).

I just can't get away!

I’ve been to Vegas seven times now and I’ve not once laid eyes on the Vegas Welcome sign which is probably the most iconic part of Vegas. This was something I had on my wish list before the trip, so I grab a taxi from Planet Hollywood. Taxi driver was a really cool and friendly guy and told me a bunch of stories in the 10 minute drive down the strip. Apparently he’d been driving a guy and a girl home that morning from a club and the guy was trying to impress the girl with some magic tricks and said that he was a magician. The taxi ride came to $23 and the magician asked the friendly cabby if he could give a $100 bill and get change for $30, cabby says sure, magician gives the cabby the $100 and cabby gives the $70 change. Apparently 5 minutes later he notices that the $100 bill is missing. The only thing he can think that happened is somehow the magician used sleight of hand or some sort of trick to take back the $100 bill and actually get paid $70 for the ride! Anyway, taxi driver was nice and I felt a little sorry for him after he told me this story so I made sure I gave him a v nice tip when he dropped me off at the Vegas sign. (This is where I find out it's a standard taxi scam story )

One thing I wasn’t really expecting at the Vegas sign was the memorial to the Vegas shootings which had happened a couple of weeks before. I thought the memorial would be closer to where the attacks actually took place. But the sign had tons of flowers, candles, toys and crosses under it in memory of the 58 who had been killed that terrible night.

I called up my Dad and told him that I was at the Vegas sign and if he went onto Earth Cam and found the Vegas sign live cam stream he would be able to see me.

Spot Tom on his phone:

After this I decided to have a walk around the memorial and pay my respects to the victims of the shooting. I feel like I am connected to Vegas in some way, I’ve had the best times of my life here and on the day of the attack I just felt terrible and was refreshing the news none stop watching the death increase and increase. Every victim had a white cross with their name written on it and the family and friends of the victims had decorated each cross with pictures, messages, candles, toys and flowers. It was an upsetting sight and walking round the crosses and reading some of the messages really brought home how at any point and without warning life can be taken away. Quite a few people crying and praying and I’m not ashamed to say I had a little water in my eyes behind my sunglasses.

After this I make the short walk back down the strip to Mandalay Bay to catch a taxi back down to the Venetian. I was quite surprised as I got closer to Mandalay Bay that the windows the shootings happened from were still different from the others, I would have assumed Mandalay Bay would want them to be like the others ASAP.

Anyway, I get the taxi back to the Venetian. Got another friendly taxi driver, she was telling me the history of the Vegas sign and that infact Vegas has seven Vegas signs. But just one that’s famous and the strip just used to the main freeway to California and that’s why the Vegas sign is there. I get back to the Venetian and head straight to the Poker room. My last session wasn’t great but I felt refreshed and ready to crush!

Alas, as if the Poker gods were out to get me again things quickly didn’t go to plan. Fairly early on I double a guy with AJ v AT on AT3 with turn and river bricks, so I’m stuck $200 pretty quickly. About an hour later I’m in the BB with 73 and it’s limped to me by about five players and I check. Flop comes 562. I decide to check into the field planning to check raise but unfortunately it’s checked through. We see the 8 on the turn, SB bets out $8 and we raise up to $30. One of the MP limpers calls (this was actually the same old guy in the previous TR post who had slowplayed 9s full when I had Tens) and the SB calls as well. Brick one time please! River 7, beautiful I thought, hopefully one of these guys hit a straight. So I bet $52. The old guy from the 9s full hand calls and the SB folds. I turn my hand over thinking I’ve won a nice pot, old guy looks at my hand, then the board, then back at his own hand, then my hand again. A good 20 seconds had passed and I still think I’m good before he finally turned over KQ “I thought you had a straight flush” he says. Mother of god! Not long after I get AQ in EP and raise to $10, guy in MP calls and we see a A26 board. I cbet $16 and he calls. Turn brings the 9. I bet $35 and he calls again, I’m pretty sure I have the best hand here almost always. River brings Q. Ok, now I 100% have the best hand, for sure a set doesn’t play it like this imo so my two pair has to be good I think as I get $55. The guy thinks for a little while before sliding $150 into the middle. I don’t think I can ever really fold here so I call it off and he turns over:

Spoiler:
QQ - One outer special!

Following my own advice from the previous post I decide to call it a night early and head back to my room. Right now it doesn’t look like I’ll be hitting the room rate targets but it doesn’t seem worth it to lose $300 at the tables to save $150 a night on the room

Updated poker sessions:

• 5hrs - $503
• 3hrs - $202
• 1hrs - $235
• 4hrs - $310
• 5hrs - $348
• 7.5hrs - $304
• 6.5hrs – ($457)
• 2.5hrs – ($372)

Total: $1,073

Which means after my spending money I’m just about slight break even for the trip so far. A little frustrating but not a huge amount I could have done I think. Before I was saying that I was running bad with flights but good with poker and now that I’m running seemingly bad at poker I’m hoping that this means I’ll have amazing flight run good for my four flights back to Georgia in a few days (free Virgin Atlantic upgrade one time! )

Tonight I’m flying in the helicopter over the strip. Pretty excited and nervous at the same time, I’d only ever been in a helicopter once before when me and Martin went to the Grand Canyon on a previous trip. When it was time I head down from my room to the place in the Venetian the bus was meant to pick me up for the helicopter. After a little wait the ‘Maverick Helicopter’ bus turns up and I get on board.

I’m the first person the driver has picked up so sat on the empty bus, he informs me that we have two further stops before heading to the airport where the helicopters are.The first stop we make is Caesars Palace where two Mexican girls and one guy got onto the bus. As I said the bus was totally empty but the girls head straight to the back row and sit next to me. Clearly my aftershave is working well after San Fran flight and now this. Fairly unluckily they spoke little to no English and even though I lived in Spain for three years and dated a Colombian girl for 6 months my Spanish, which mainly comprises of ordering food and beer, couldn’t hold a conversation with the Mexicans for very long.

We pick up the other group from the Luxor and head further down the strip. As I said before, I’ve been to Vegas seven times and never seen the Vegas sign until today well we drove straight past again it on the way to the airport lol. Just past where the Vegas sign is we drive into the ‘Las Vegas Executive Terminal’ which is pretty much on the strip and where all the private planes land. We go into the helicopter waiting area and I’m checked into the flight. As part of the check in they have to weigh you and I was half expecting the check in girl to say “Sorry sir, you’re clearly too fat to fly today” haha but we dodged that sweat. Small wait and my number is called and I meet Trent the helicopter pilot.

We’re taken out to the helicopter area, I was actually really surprised but there must have been 20+ helicopters out there. We’re given a short safety briefing and then given our seats. I had asked when I checked in if I could pay extra for a front seat but unfortunately the woman at the desk said it was based on weight and the captain has to be decide. Trent calls my name and I’m given a backrow window seat on the right hand side of the helicopter. Slightly tilted I got backrow but was happy that I got a window seat. The three Mexicans got into the front row seats and an older couple got into the seats to my left. Fairly annoyingly when you spoke into the helicopter headset the whole aircraft can hear what you’re saying. The older couple next to me spoke Spanish to each other, I’m guessing they were from Mexico as well and the Mexicans infront of me spoke Spanish as well so it looked like a whole flight I'd be listening to Spanish talking through my headset.

Anyway, the helicopter propellers started building up speed and after a little while we were taking off and started heading towards the strip. There is no feeling in the world like flying in a helicopter, I totally love it. To me it feels like a very safe rollercoaster ride. I found out pretty quickly though that my ‘aircraft runbad’ was still continuing as I had been given the right hand side window we flew down the Vegas strip on the left hand side of the helicopter so I had to take pictures with people’s heads in the way. The views were still totally spectacular though, you really can’t beat Vegas at night time.

We headed down the strip, past the Venetian and the Wynn and head towards the Stratosphere. We fly fairly close past the Stratosphere on about the same level as the platform on top.

We keep going a little further until we’re flying over old Vegas and the Golden Nugget and this is where we do a circle round. I was hoping that we would go back the way we had come so at least my window would be over the strip but just looped round and flew back down the other side of the strip meaning my window was mainly looking out across the city and not the strip. Again I can’t really complain andI still got amazing views but would have probably been 5x better in the front seat. So we fly down the other side, past the Bellagio (had hoped we’d be lucky and fly over during a fountain show but unfortunately not).

We keep going past Aria, Luxor and Mandalay Bay and before I knew it we were back on the ground. In total we were up in the air around ten minutes and it seemed to go quickly, I would recommend doing it though and at a cost of $115 it seemed fairly good value for money I thought.

At this point I have a predicament I’ve not had before and most likely never will have again, do you tip your helicopter pilot? Haha. In the end I decided I tip a guy to open a taxi door open for me I think a guy who just had my life in his hands deserves a little thank you. I get back on the bus to take us back to the hotel and compare my pictures with one of the Mexican girls, “Bien Bien” just about all I can say.

My friend Joe, who is also a regular Vegas traveler and trip report poster, has been taking the mick a little due to the amount of times I have been to Earl during this trip. See, I’m the type of person who finds a restaurant I like and would prefer just to keep going back to the same place than risk going to somewhere new which could be rubbish. Joe is the total reverse and likes trying out new places all the time. So when the 10th “Going to Earl for a change today Tommy?” popped up on the Poker group WhatsApp I decided to throw Joe a ‘restaurant choice wild card’ to spice things up a little. I told him that he could pick any restaurant in Las Vegas, from KFC in the ghetto to Picasso in The Bellagio and on Monday night that’s where I would dine. Tbf Joe does have a great track record as he’s the person who recommended CUT and Wynn Jazz buffet which are two of my favorite places to eat in Vegas. So after a little think Joey comes back with Jaleo in Cosmopolitan.

I told me not to tell me anything about the place as I wanted to rock up and it to be a total surprise. He agreed and just told me to sit at the bar when I get there. So I get off the bus with the Mexicans at Caesars Palace and make the short walk past the fountains and into Cosmo.

I said in a previous post that the Wynn décor is my favorite in Vegas, well if that’s the case then Cosmo is a very close second, very very nice inside.

I head to the third floor where the Wild Card, Jaleo is and take a seat at the bar as Joey recommended. This place seemed pretty cool, there was a big fire pit / cooking are behind where I was sitting at the bar.

I’m passed the drinks and food menu by the bar tender and for the first time I see what type of restaurant it is… Spanish tapas! This was certainly a Spanish themed evening for sure. If you ask any of my friends what my alcoholic drink of choice is they’ll tell pretty quickly, Sex on the Beach (lol). I didn’t see this drink on the cocktail menu but normally if Sex on the Beach is missing you can ask the bartender and they’ll make it for you. “I can’t see it on the menu but would it be possible to have a Sex on the beach please?” The bar tender gives me a look like I’d just spat in his eye “Nope, sorry” Ooops, not a great start. He recommended the cocktail Floral Funk so I took this but it only took a tiny sip before I knew I hated it, I don’t think I’ve ever tasted something so sour before. Poker on TV though which was a plus.

For food I was unsure what to go for so I ordered the ‘Chefs Tasting’ which was basically the best bits of the menu.

They explained what each plate was but tbh I didn’t really understand all what they were saying so posting the pictures below for you to figure out.

When the below dish came out I heard the waiter say "Brains pork". I'm like "What?? What is it again, I think I misheard you", "it's brains pork sir in red wine sauce" just puking at the thought of eating pig brains I say "brains??" again just to be sure to which he responds "Nooo braised pork" hahaha

Dessert by far the best dish on the list. Drink still going down well

If I’m totally honest I wasn’t blown away by the food and thought it was even average to poor. Service was good and atmosphere was nice but overall I would have to rate the place a 5/10. Have to try harder next time Joey
After Jaleo I head back down the strip, past the fountains, debating if I should grind some more poker or just call it a night and in the end I elect for the latter and head back to my room.

Rough plans for tomorrow: Win $2k playing poker, watch Elton John play some piano and eat the tastiest steak I’ve ever tried at CUT. Until then, see ya.

I've really enjoyed this. I like your taste. I go once or twice a year and like you I know exactly who Jay, Art, and Shirley are. I like the late shift at the V too.

Good luck! Remember that your hours at V are time you are at the table and dealt in. Maybe you don't walk around as much as I do but your setting the time leaves me wondering if you find you are short hours when it's time to get your rate adjusted.

Thanks for the thoughts eco. Yep, was aware of the Caesars Earl but we have timed it in the past and it doesn't make a huge difference in time and for sure reason Caesars Earl is more expensive.

Had never heard of Oakland but next time I fly to San Fran I'll be checking it out after the problems I had this time.

I pretty much did what you said regarding the Soutwest seats apart from not giving eye contact which I fear might of been my fatal flaw haha

Yep, no way I was walking along that bridge

Thanks for following!

I never recline the seat so that doesn't bother me. If there is an empty seat on a plane the chance that it is next to me has been about 80% plus in my lifetime. I run really good when it runs to flights though too, so, basically the exact opposite as OP.

Good TR!
As someone with a Super PhD in Southwest flights I have a question for you. On both of my flights I was given a C boarding pass which meant I was the last group onto the plane. Without paying extra is it possible to control which boarding group you're given or just a random thing?

Thanks!

Nice! A man with good taste as well then Yep Jay, Art and Shirley were just three that came to mind but there are a bunch of other legend dealers I see everytime I come here.

Thanks for the good luck wishes and the advice about getting up. I'm the type of playing who just plays none stop once the session is started and if I ever do go to the toilet etc I would stop the countdown.

I think I got pretty unlucky with the tasting of choice. I'm not a huge fan of fish and I'm allergic to eggs and most of the dishes went down this road. The food would have received a slightly higher rating if I was able to eat more of them but my fault for not checking before ordering. Also the chairs at the bat were super uncomfortable so if I went again I'd get a table for sure. Finally, for some reason Cosmo is the only hotel which doesn't seem to have public wifi. You need a room number and guest name to log into any of the wifiis which is pretty annoying.

Angry Joey CHO also pointed out that this place is called Holsteins and not Buns and Shakes and as it's decent I'm correcting it here incase any of you guys fancy a visit.

To my credit the place is called Holsteins - Shakes & Buns so I'm going to take that as we're both half right

I'm not Scott, but I think you can 'check in' online 24 hours in advance, and the closer to 24 hours you are, without going over, the better your chances of getting in early. I believe the first 15 or 30 spots are for business select (costs more) but after that, first come first served, as far as online check-in goes. If you wait til you get to the airport, C section, for sure.

I believe SWA has an app for that, as well. Or you can use the website.
