Yes, but the game doesn't run bigger overall. Maybe more short stacks go in every once in a while, but the betting in general (and therefore pot) is usually smaller with shorter stacks. At least that's my experience everywhere I've played. Bigger buy-in, bigger game.

There is no way a 1/2 game capped at $100 plays bigger than a 1/2 game capped at $500.

There is not a significant difference between the two. Any difference is usually more because of the room than the actual limits. Some places there are action 1/2 NL games, some places 1/2 NL is a peasants game (2 limpers for $2, button raises to $6 and everyone folds).

Sure, but all things being equal, if a room runs 1/3 it is generally a deeper game with bigger opening raises than the average 1/2 game.

I've almost never seen a 1/3 game where half the table has $100 stacks or less, whereas it's not that uncommon at a 1/2 game, especially during the morning or afternoon.

My stack at a particularly good session of 1/3 at Wynn last August.

You will pretty much never ever see a stack like that at 1/2.

They're completely different games. 1/2 is a kids game, the stakes don't matter and you will see amateur play all the time. 1/3 is another beast entirely. Almost all of the 1/3 regs are tough, they'll chew you up, take your whole bankroll.

Ok then. This thread has taken an absurdist tone, hasn't it? Lock it up, mods.

Or just ignore the troll?

One thing I noticed about 1/3...easier to punish the limpers and make them fold. In non-straddled pots there seems to be a magic threshold that's around $15 - $20 depending on the mood of the table for both 1/2 and 1/3 where above that the folding frequency of limpers goes way up regardless of number of limpers. It's way easier to go above that threshold at 1/3. At 1/2 you can make it $20 with two limpers which would be ridiculous but at 1/3 it's very reasonable.

Compounded with the fact that there are more < $100 stacks at 1/2, a lot of pots at 1/2 have stupidly low SPRs.

One thing not mentioned is promos. A 1/2 game with high hand/aces cracked/weekly freeroll/pay for hours spent on the table will be full of local nits especially during the day. They won't be good players, but you'll rarely get their whole stack. Orleans will have some of them due to their promos and cheap food but the 1/3 cuts the numbers slightly.

I have found it easier to build pots in 1/3 and supernit tables are less common.

I played in a bunch of those games for many hours on some early trips to Vegas. That game played completely bonkers. No relation at all to current 1/2 games. That Bellagio game played fast and furious and it was not uncommon to find people stuck or up 5+ buy ins in a very short period of time.

The 10-15 year gap is the difference between these 2 mostly in my opinion

i've played mostly 1/2 and a few hours of 1/3 and both games played very similar save for the small difference in open raises in the 1/3 game.

I am currently in a 1-2 game at Bally’s and have noticed that at 1/2 you see a lot more players check then call bets rather then bet their own hand.

Can we assume, where I play we only have
1/2, that at 1/3, people would be inclined to defend there blinds more than at 1/2?

No. At 1-2 they can call with anything PF and players that loose are defending their blinds more often.

I don't think players at either stake think about defending their blinds in terms of defending their blinds as opposed to "hey let's try to flop a flush with Q5s".
