When and where in vegas Total Rewards comps rooms is a function that seems to be based on a few things, Level of Play is the biggest factor, the rest who knows but in no particular order:
Time of year
How far in advance you want the room.
Room availability.
What is going on in vegas.
What is going on at a specific property.
Some examples, Casear's and the Cromwell are less likely to give out free rooms then say the flamingo or harrahs. Weeknights are more likely to be comped then weekends. Summer months are easier to get comped rooms. Big events are harder to get rooms, especially close, such as super bowl weekend or new years.
Also, if there is even the slightest chance you are going to vegas on certain dates and the rooms are listed as comped, just book them, you can always cancel up to 72 hours in advance. They announced WSOP dates the other day, comps were available so i booked a few sets of dates already, when i finalize plans in a few months i will just cancel the ones i don't need. I can't say for sure that this doesn't affect future comps, but i have been booking and cancelling rooms i don't need throughout the year for many years and it hasn't seemed to affected things. YMMV.
You can actually cancel comped rooms day of the reservation until 6pm for Vegas
I agree book comped rooms if there's any chance you will use them, especially weekends
As for it being better to book far in advance-thats not always the case
Lots of times rates drop/become comped as the date gets closer
You can always book then cancel and rebook at the cheaper rate/comped when this happens
