I've been advocating this for years as a money saving device. I haven't had a "free" ($20 in the VP machine, lol) drink in Vegas in years, and I bet I've saved hundreds of dollars.

Blue Sky Mining is still one of the best albums of 1990, IMO. Think I'll slip it into the Spotify playlist this morning.

Absolutely. Who knows how many times I've spent $5-$10 more in a slot machine waiting on a "free" drink.lol Outside of LV, buying a drink at the casino/VP bar is often reasonable with prices of $5-$7.50/each. I know that's not cheap but it's reasonable, all things considered. But in LV, it's not uncommon to pay $10-$14 for a drink at a casino/VP bar. That seems crazy to me but it's still cheaper than sticking another $20 in the slot machine to get another "free" drink.

Except sticking $20 in the machine doesn't mean you're going to lose $20. I would think on a poker forum people would think about this in terms of expectation. Even if you're playing at a crappy 96% payoff VP machine, playing $1.25/spin (max credits at a quarter machine) will only cost you 5c/spin in expectation. If you can get a drink every 40 spins or so, that's only $2/drink, not $20.

I'll be the first to admit that VP is a different animal but that's why I said slots and not VP. The only thing I'd really argue with is the 40 hand part. If you have drink service fast enough to get a drink every 40 hands, then I'd sit there even if it's a slot machine.

The fastest of the fast VP players get in about 1,200 hands per hour but that's insane. According to the VP forums the normal "good" players can get 800+/hour. So let's say I'm really slow and I only get in 500/hour. That gives me 7.2 seconds per hand, which if you count that out, is a long time. More than enough time to pick your cards and draw. So 7.2 seconds X 40 hands is 4:48. It's a rarity that I order a drink on the floor and get it 5 mins. And if we are talking about getting multiple drinks in rowvery often the waitress doesn't want to take drink orders until she's done serving her tray and then she starts her round over.

So while I don't disagree about the VP being much better for the expected loss while waiting on drinks, I do disagree that you'd be getting a drink every 5 mins. Just my 2 cents

And lest we forget, a "Crown and Coke" ordered on the floor usually contains absolutely no real Crown.

This is true (now days) in LV and in all the Southern casinos I've been in. I do believe this is something that's gotten worse in the last 3-5 years.

Go to a VP bar and get a drink mixed in front of you and watch the liquor poured right out of the bottle. Now go 25 ft away at a slot machine and order the same drink. 9 out of 10 times the drink you get at the slot machine is terrible and extremely weak.

So with all that said, I don't mind the "pay to play" mentality of the free drinks but give me a real drink if I actually earned it. If I haven't earned it, be honest and say, "we are going to bring you a watered down drink mixed with a well, not really Crown."lol My wife and I have gotten so tired of crappy drinks on the floor that we often just go to the bar and pay for them. At least I get what I want.
No kidding. I like to play craps at the one lone table at Margaritaville attached to Flamingo. Margaritas on the rocks at the table suck, but 8 steps away at the bar they are the best.

Order a crown neat, hand the player next to you a dollar and ask him to order a coke. Mix whiskey and coke. Drink. Repeat.

500 hands an hour is kinda slow if your goal is play VP. But if your goal is to get free drinks while appearing to play VP, I think you could play a lot slower than that. Probably like 200 hands/hour, especially if you are holding a conversation while doing it.

I guess the real question is how many hands you have to play at $1.25 before you get a new ticket or your light turns green at those bars that are limiting this sort of thing.

Yeah, my friend is a knowledgeable VP player, so every 5-10 hands, I ask him a question about what I should do, watch him play a bit, etc. I highly doubt I get anywhere close to 200 hands per hour the way I play while playing to get free drinks.

I play around 800 hands/hour (or 500-600 on multiline), but I could easy milk the clock to only play 200-300, if I were just scamming drinks.

You could prob just order both for yourself, at most places. The other night I got a redbull/vodka and barely tasted it. The next round I just got a can of redbull and vodka rocks; I got MUCH more booze that way.
