Re: cushlash in Vegas; TLDR

Time for a pre-WSOP update. I've been really busy getting everything settled in my new place. There are some minor projects I still need to do but I've done everything that needed to be done immediately so I'm gonna hold off on the rest until after the WSOP so I can focus.

To that end, I've also decided that I'm going to play mostly nl for the series. The little poker I've played in the last 2 weeks has mostly been in that mix at Aria in an attempt to learn the other games, but playing some O8 at Venetian yesterday and seeing/hearing about the nl games that were going on makes me pretty certain that trying to learn mix all summer would not be the best use of my time. I have had fun learning other games and feel like I've made a lot of progress since I started, but in the end I still am significantly better at nl than any other game and with how low my volume has been this year, I really need to take advantage and play my best game.

This decision also harkens back to the focus thing. Last year I had a fairly successful WSOP despite pretty much never playing bigger than 2/5. I believe this is because I was focused the entire time, unlike my first summer here when I was bouncing around between games trying to find my niche. To be honest yesterday I felt pretty similarly to when I first moved out here. Sort of lost and unsure. I don't want to waste time in this mindset so I'm making the decision to stick to one game.

It would be awesome if I had the mindset to jump between game types seamlessly since thats probably the most +EV in a vacuum, but as I've talked about before, my mind doesn't operate that way. I will certainly keep learning other games since its been a lot of fun for me, but the opportunity cost of giving up the nl games this summer is too great.

I've also had a pretty nice break from nl so even though I'll be rusty for a while, I'm actually somewhat looking forward to getting back to my bread and butter.

Cush, to my experience you are making a really good decision. WSOP time is when you play the games you can make the most money in, for a pro like yourself anyways. Mixed game/non-NLHE specialists come out of the woodwork for the WSOP from like$15/$30 limit and up.

Conversely, there are recreational players who come to Vegas every year looking to gamble up with pros of all levels in NLHE and, more recently, PLO.

Don't get me wrong, it is fun playing O8B with bracelet winners and semi-famous grinders. It just isn't shooting fish in a barrel like $2-$5 can be during WSOP.

Just a small example of this was two years ago when I was in LV the last week of WSOP playing $8-$16 and $15/$30 OE with Cyndi Violette and five pro limit grinders. She was probably the third-best OE player at the table, a Foxwoods grinder named Sergio Vargas was just crushing the game and made us all look like rank amateurs. I know, LOL sample size but it isn't hard to spot a bad split-pot game player the same as it is easy for an experienced big bet game player to spot weak opponents there.

Cush, yet again we are very similarly situated. I had planned on coming into this wsop planning on playing half-nl/plo, half-mixed for both cash and tournaments, but for similar reasons have decided to focus on nl with some mixed thrown in when I crave some variety.

Re: cushlash in Vegas; TLDR

Hey guys, been grinding away for the last couple weeks. Not getting the volume I was planning on but its been way better than what I was getting the previous few months. I started off on a pretty good heater which has regressed back a bit in the last few days due to some run bad and subsequent play bad/autopiloting.

As advertised I've been sticking to nl except for a short PLO session and one disastrous day at 20/40 O8 at Rio. I think I played fine but certainly made mistakes since I'm pretty raw in the game. I was trying to play tight and about halfway through decided I wasn't sure if I was running bad or playing bad so I was gonna play only A2 hands unless I was OTB or defending my blinds. They tell beginners to do this because you're not giving up much and it helps to stay out of trouble. I proceeded to lose another rack and a half while watching people scoop with hands like 2246 and KJ98 so I left.

On the nl side I've been playing mostly 5/10 and played my first full 2/5 session yesterday. 5/10 has been marginal imo, but they are certainly better than the games that run during the rest of the year. Yesterday I decided to play 2/5 and get my mojo back after a few days of not playing my best. It went ok and the games were decent despite some friends saying that it was bad that day compared to the rest of the series. If thats true then I might be playing more 2/5 later on when 5/10 is marginal. There are almost always 10+ 2/5 games at V so if 5/10 is marginal its easy to find something better.

To start the series I had been hoping around between Rio and V but I really hate the Rio and everything about it so I think I'm gonna stick to V for the most part. Also played one day at Wynn because lists were 50+ deep everywhere else and that was fine too. By the time I go in, Aria and B are already slammed and since their rooms are small I avoid them. Today I'm taking off and am gonna start a morning schedule Wednesday so I might play at B some since I'll be able to get in then.

I think getting on that schedule will be better for volume because too often I don't go in until 4-5pm and by the time 10/11 rolls around I'm just done. So much easier for me to get volume in when I'm at the poker room by noon. Luckily I can still play 5/10 since games go 24/7 now. After the series thats not the case but I may keep that schedule anyways.

Thats all I got, gonna go enjoy a day off of ultimate frisbee and marathoning Game of Thrones (on season 2).

i'm going to be on an early schedule too. this is certainly the way to go with the series in town. there are a lot of games going before 4pm and there are not a lot of pros in them. it's also a lot easier to put in long sessions when you start early...you could always hit the rio in the afternoon and move to the V at night. i think the Rio is must play so i'm obviously biased haha

Its just a group of poker players that play. I played in college every once in a while with friends but never on any organized team.

Yea I hate the Rio but I agree on the morning schedule stuff. Have put in back to back long sessions without much issue and its because I'm getting in at 12:30ish instead of 5.

Re: cushlash in Vegas; TLDR

Hey guys, been back on a mostly consistent schedule the last couple weeks. Other than a short break-even o8 session at the Rio and a 5/10 session at B I've been hanging out at V 2/5 trying to get my mindset back on track. I'm finally starting to get back into a rhythm schedule-wise which is nice. Results have been pretty flat, nothing great, nothing horrible. Until yesterday I wasn't playing very good imo and was playing distracted/on autopilot. Yesterday I had a small losing session but it was one of my best in a while. I was paying attention, reads were good, and I was making decisions based on what made sense instead of whats "standard".

I'm glad to have had a day like that because I'm playing the 1500 Monster Stack on Thursday and I want to be sharp. I don't play tournaments much but I'm pretty excited for this one. The deep structure should work to my advantage being a cash game player.

Off today and gonna get a session in tomorrow and register for the Monster Stack. After that it will be back to cash. Now that I'm feeling sharp again I will be back to playing more 5/10.

I had been having trouble focusing recently. I have some other stuff I want to do and I've wasted a lot of energy thinking about them but not actually doing anything productive. I really feel like my head is back on track though, and for the next ~3 weeks it will be all poker.

I think trying to push aside what's "standard" is very important. It's something I've been struggling with myself. As live game players we have to combine what makes sense (betting patterns and history) with live reads and instinct. Sometimes we have to ignore an "I'm always doing x here".

Good luck to you at the monster stack. Agreed the deeper structure is to our advantage as cash game players!
