Re: cushlash in Vegas; TLDR

Hey Tyler,

I am interested in getting some coaching.

I used to play 5/10 online but have dropped back to 1/2 due to working a full time job so don't have the time to devote to it anymore. Win rate of 5bb/100.

Mainly interested in advice for live games as I would be total spew in your typical 2/5 & 5/10 games.

PM me if you are interested

Kyle

Have you considered picking up a job out there day/prop trading? While it is a more "conventional" pursuit than poker, many of the skills you're clearly mastering (quick decision making, discipline, table/stock selection, leveraging risk when you perceive an edge, etc) are highly transferable to day trading.

I say this from experience as I was a day trader for a proprietary trading company out of NYC from 2005-2007. To this day, it's the most fun job I ever had; but I eventually came to the realization that I wasn't good enough to make it a career.

There are definitely a few such firms in Vegas, so maybe that's something you could consider. It's also the type of job where you can make your own schedule, which is something else that may appeal to you.
Thanks man, this is definitely something I will look into. Despite getting a finance degree I'm not super confident trading actively on my own which is why I haven't started yet.

I've continued to bounce around the last couple weeks, mostly between Wynn and V. A lot of my days have consisted of 2-3 very short sessions while I'm finding better games or waiting at 2/5 for a 5/10 game.

Right after my last update I actually played what I'm pretty sure is my biggest pot ever. 300bb deep at 5/10 a guy took a wicked strange line with AKs against my KK. He did flop a diamond flush draw so when the money went in on the turn he had 12 outs, which was somewhat disappointing to see since I thought I had him running to 2 outs with a smaller over pair. I didn't have much time to think about it though, because the dealer instantly ripped and flipped a safe river for me and shipped me my biggest pot ever.

The last few days have been very strange schedule wise. I decided to try out a graveyard type schedule where I wake up early and sleep from about 7-8pm till 1-2am. I really only played one full session on this schedule, which was a 5am-11am session on Thursday morning. Played in a good 5/10 game and won a decent amount but talking to another reg who had been in the game all night, it was not typical for the game to be going and full at those hours. Then this morning I was up even earlier but Bellagio was dead and Wynn wasn't much better. Without a great game going I was no longer excited to be playing at 2am and packed it up after about an hour. It was an interesting experiment to say the least but it would take me a while to adjust to a schedule like that and isn't something I could maintain long term so its not something I'll be doing much more of.

For ****s and giggles I played an online satellite to the WSOPc Main Event at Caesars and got 2nd. They only gave away one seat but I got $665 in remainder money as consolation prize which was nice.

So despite some decent results so far this year, volume still has been very low. I get short bursts of motivation but they seem to be fizzling much faster that usual lately. A couple times in the last week and a half I've left after a very short session because I just really wasn't in the mood to play good poker. Quite frankly I haven't been having nearly as much fun with poker as I used to even though I've been winning at a decent clip. As I've discussed previously itt, I always knew I wasn't gonna play full-time poker the rest of my life and was using it as a launching pad to finance other passive/semi-passive investments. Lately I've been trying to play full-time hours because I felt like I had to even though I had no good reason to feel that way and wasn't happy doing it. Basically what I've realized is that I've reached the point where I want to play less and do some other stuff. This realization was important to me because simply acknowledging that I want to play less and thats completely fine and in line with my goals is incredibly liberating. I'm still not interested in the 9-5 life and want to maintain the freedom that I have playing poker. I've been exploring other avenues for achieving the income I need while maintaining a free schedule. Some have to do with poker, just not playing full time, and some are unrelated. Right now I'm still mostly in the information gathering stage for this stuff but I'm excited to start diversifying my income.

I hope this post didn't come off as too much of a downer because its really not. I'm not quitting poker. I still enjoy poker, just not when I'm playing full-time. I'm ready to move on to the next phase where I play some poker and use what I've made so far to generate other income streams. This will take some time so its not like tomorrow I'm gonna instantly have a different routine. I'm just going to start working more actively on finding ways to use my capital to generate income.
I've also been playing live poker full-time (now for about 3/4 year) and am finding that I no longer enjoy it as much as I used to, rather surprisingly. Looking forward to figuring out what's next. Cheers!

Re: cushlash in Vegas; TLDR

The thing about cash games, any limit, it's tough to make a substantial amount of money playing full-time. It's tough to win consistantly week in and week out. I've been on bad runs for months and seem that every hand I'm dealt has a 2 in it. So definetly anyone that wants to play for living, how ironic may seem, should have other means of income, unless you have millions in financial assests.

multiple passive income streams FTW.

interesting coincidence i was watching a video from School of Cards on youtube and he said "No matter if you are playing 50c/$1 or $50/$100 poker is a grind. The roller coaster never goes away.....and I think thats true unless you bink a tourney for a mirrion and invest or something....at some point all successful cash game players want to get off the ride.

Cush, just wanted to congratulate you on the thread. I'm about 5 pages deep, but had to skip to the last page to check and make sure it had a happy ending (so to speak).

10 months of posts, leading up to a 300bb stack vs 300bb stack all in scoop at 5/10 is awesome. Congrats dude.

Does Vegas really work this way? Do people line up and watch/know when a whale is present? I mean at 5/10 or 2/5? Obv not 1/2...

No worries man, good to meet you too. That traffic is brutal. We didn't even get anything too bad but I'd hate to have to drive in that every day.

Yea above 5/10 and occasionally at deeper 5/10 games this is how it often works. Its awful for the long term sustainability of games but thats the state of poker right now.

Re: cushlash in Vegas; TLDR

Yo guys, so as has already been said, I was in LA for the weekend. RobFarha and I crashed at tmckendry and fogo's place (thanks again guys). Before that I had played a few PLO sessions in Vegas with pretty small wins/losses that pretty much cancelled.

In LA I didn't play that much poker. I didn't plan on grinding too hard, definitely played less than I was planning on but for me it was no big deal. We ended up drinking most nights which led to late sleeping and low motivation. I was also way out of my routine/comfort zone with figuring out a new place and spent a lot of time driving between casinos. It further proved to me that for me to get into a good grind mode I need to have a consistent routine which is pretty tough to establish in just one weekend in an unfamiliar place.

Basically played a total of 8 hours the whole time, one hour at Bike 5/5 and two short sessions at Commerce 5/10. I wasn't all that impressed with the 5/10 at Commerce but lol sample size. I did hear the 5/5 was much softer but the rake in those games are so brutal. I didn't really like the LA vibe to be honest. Casinos are much dirtier/dingier, traffic sucks, rake is absurd. Small sample obviously but I don't think the increased hourly is worth the other disadvantages for me personally.

Trip overall was fine though, got to hang with fogo, tyler and their other roommate a bunch and talk about poker and other stuff and get into some shenanigans in Long Beach.

Got back to Vegas this morning since we left at 5am and drove back. I went to bed at 11 this morning so that was interesting since now my sleep schedule is all out of wack.

Have a few other things on the docket for the next couple days and back to the grind Thursday.

Cush you have a thread?? I thought your were leveling the entire time, I actually didn't even know if you played poker more than a couple times. I thought you said something about being a cat enthusiast (and was confused how you made money off it, but to each his own).

Re: cushlash in Vegas; TLDR

Hey guys, volume still been absurdly low. Was back at the nl grind Thursday with short sessions at Wynn and V 5/10. Ran a pretty stupid bluff and ended up losing a bunch. The guy tanked river for several minutes so it can't be too horrible if he thinks that long but still not a great spot to go after.

Decided I needed to get confidence back/knock out some rust from not playing much and spent a day at 2/5 at V. Played my B game, booked a solid win.

Sunday I played the 15/30 O8 game at V. The game was pretty good and despite not having a ton of experience in that game, just by playing tight I was a decent favorite in the game. Was up a ton at first and ended up booking about a 10BB win.

Yesterday I was in one of the best 5/10 games I've ever been in and unfortunately got doomswitched. Got 800 in pre with AQ against 77 in a weird spot. Straddled pot, then UTG blind raises to 60. A player in the middle calls, I go 250 from the CO, guy who blind raised stuffs it for 800, middle player folds and I call. Flop comes JT8 giving me all the outs which all brick.

From there I basically lost small pots consistently just having to give up on bad turns with some value hands. Also incorrectly value owned myself in a limped pot when I flopped 2 pair and should have check/folded river instead of bet/folded. Last hand of the night I got set over set by one of the main spots at the table and that pretty much sealed it. Losing big in great games is pretty annoying, but I won the equity battle.

I also had my first coaching session this past week which I think went well. Looking forward to doing more of that in the future.

Fogo and tmckendry in town for the week so will be chillin with them and watching lots of March Madness this weekend. We went out last night, met up with Katana as well and just hung out for a while. I crushed a pushup prop bet while fairly drunk. I have no idea how it got started but basically people were arguing over how many pushups I'd be able to do without stopping and I said if someone bets I'd do it. I went to the bathroom and came back to hear that a bet had been made but I wasn't told what the over/under was or who had bet. Got to 21, crushing the over/under of 9

So yea, crazy as it may seem, I don't think I'll be playing much this week as last year I missed out on watching the tournament in favor of playing more poker and remember feeling like it wasn't worth it despite games being very good. Basically the same argument I have for taking off Saturday's during football season with the added factor of me not being super motivated to grind lately.

I've been looking more into houses around here and plan to get some addresses today and go look around tomorrow just at the outsides of some places. Also getting some administrative stuff done with my investments, after which I'll start adding to them.

Still haven't really found anything specific I'd like to pursue in terms of income production outside of poker but I've been talking to people at the table about stuff they do and brainstorming/researching on my own. I'd like to find something that offers a similarly free lifestyle as poker because really I love the lifestyle it offers, I've just lost that passion/spark. Its also not a case of just not liking it because I'm losing. I remember feeling the same way earlier this year when I was having above average results and thinking "wow, if I'm not liking poker when I'm winning, whats gonna happen when I inevitably start losing again?". Here's a shocker: it sucks. The wins never feel as good as the losses feel bad, thats just a proven fact of human psychology, but lately that effect has been much more extreme with wins feeling even less good and losses feeling even worse.

I probably come off as lazy based on my volume but the truth is I'm no stranger to hard work. My whole life I've worked my ass off in school/sports/part-time jobs and until recently, poker. I'm just the type of person that has to enjoy what I'm doing, otherwise I just won't do it. I think the poker spark will re-ingnite at some point, especially as I learn other games, but I think it will be kind of like a re-chargeable battery that lasts just a bit shorter every time it gets recharged. For that reason I need to be looking into other things as well as playing poker.

Anyways this post was sorta all over the place and probably comes off way more negative than I actually feel but I just wanted to get some thoughts down.

I wouldn't say obese but I'm overweight (5'11'' 215lbs) and don't look to be in particularly good shape. Also I had been drinking so I'm sure that was factored in to the line.
