The Cosmopolitan, a chic high-rise hotel on the Las Vegas Strip, is eliminating parking fees for hotel guests.

The new policy, which begins Jan. 1, follows a similar move in July by Wynn and Encore resorts.

Prediction: Resort fees also going up Jan 1.

Yep.

If they were dropping an unprofitable parking fee, they would have done it immediately, not announce a future date. They only announce futute dates when they expect to make even more money somehow.

Wait, so hotel guests at every other hotel on the strip still need to pay for parking? Wow, I thought it was just to stop tourists and randoms from getting free strip parking.

This is true, but as a local I never stay in the rooms.

Couldn’t the resort fee have gone up anyway? It will be $4 higher, but $4 more is still cheaper than what hotel guests with a car would pay for parking/valet fees. I’m actually surprised they are doing this as I don’t see how it will make them more money.

Yes. They have all been charging hotel guests since day one.

I don’t have numbers, but I highly doubt that a large percentage of hotel guests at the Cosmopolitan use a car? If they charge $10/day for parking now and raise resort fees by $4, they would make more money if less than 40% of guests use a car.

That number doesn’t account for valet or them having lower staff costs.

You do realize that hotels in major metropolitan areas around the country charge guests for parking, right? Hell, even restaurants in busy corridors of major cities charge their patrons to park.

Based on these stats (page 19-20), 54% of visitors drive here, and 14% who visited (presumably by air) rented a car.

How similar are Cosmo visitors to the average Vegas visitor, though?

This is accurate, but the majority of people are not going to think these are equal situations. Vegas is Vegas. Giving people worse and worse odds over the years and then charging them to park to do it is pure greed and not caring about your customers. Not to mention resort fees being implemented and continuing to rise, it's just stealing more money from customers. Granted, people continue to pay it, which is why they do it, but it is a different feeling now than in the past.

This has been the new model of capitalism for years. When organic growth stalls or is very limited, companies start squeezing every place they can to make up for it. Services and amenities to customers actually go down so the company can increase their earnings. Overall, customers don't have much recourse because all companies are doing it.

It's cruddy, but it's driven by greed which has always won in the long run.

You ever stayed in a hotel in Chicago? New York? San Fran? If you’re a paying guest you’re still not keeping a car on their property for less than $60/day downtown

The only difference is that people are not used to being charged for parking at a casino. Other than that, the Strip fits all characteristics of an area where paid parking is totally standard. Most obviously the total lack of public parking spots.

The majority of people who visit Vegas for the first time in 2019 will think these are equal situations because they don’t know it any other way. People who started to drive Vegas ‘in the good old times’ won’t see it that way. Casinos hope they will eventually get used to it, like they did with resort fees, bad blackjack odds and no free drinks for low rollers in sports books.

But what about the people that park at the property and don’t pay resort fees? They don’t get the parking fees or the extra money from the increased resort fee from those people.

The Strip has plenty of parking spots. I actually think it’s shocking anyone would say it’s obvious there aren’t enough spaces. Even when I was new to the Strip finding parking spaces was never an issue.

But they’re just hotels, not casinos.
