Hi All,

Stayed in Vegas for 2 weeks of De'genning in June. A week in the signature and a week in Venetian.

Gambled hard for 2 weeks losing about $10k on slots/pits etc!

I believe about half of that was in the Venetian/Palazzo. Anyway, on the last day I noticed that the slots said I had $91 of free play so I went to the host desk in Palazzo to ask how I claim that seeing as it was our last day!

He scanned the card and then offered to send me and my g/f to any restauarent we wanted to the value of $250. He also waived the resort fee which was about $150ish.

Whilst I did enjoy this, as did my g/f as it was nice to eat for free (Yes I know, losing 10k doesnt make it free but still) it did make me wonder what I missed out on last year on the same trip and also what I could have gotten from MGM for all my losses there in the first week.

So my question. How do these comps work? or is it just down to the managers discretion. I am wondering, if because we are relatively young to be dropping 5 figures comfortably (24 when we were there) if that the guy realised it would be good long term to give us a good time now or if that is standard?

Will be heading back in the summer so want to know exactly how this works and the best way to maximise value on the freebies

Cheers

If you were using a players card and being rated then you should have some comps built up already and may have some sort of status. MGM has the MLife card and you can look at your status and express comps on mlife.com. It will also show you any discounted room rates/comps you may have.

Even if you do that though, I would try calling MGM or whatever MGM property it was that you played at the most and ask to talk to a host. They will be able to look at your information and may be able to give you some better comps (room, food, etc..) than what is on their website. Those are a few things you can do prior to going to Vegas to try and get reduced rooms rates/comped rooms.

Once in Vegas any time you are playing at a table for a while you can ask the pit boss for a comp or you can go talk to your host or the host on duty at that time and try to get something comped. Also, before you checkout make sure to visit your host to see if they can get any resort fees, room rates, or room charges taken care of. If you are gambling enough and have a host it may be wise to charge everything to your room during your stay and then before you leave go to see your host and see what can get taken off of your bill.

I am sure there are people more qualified than me to help you out, but I would start with calling and trying to talk to a host or checking on the website.

Comps are based on theoretical loss not actuals although they still track. Make sure the pit boss tracks all your buy ins and you get rated correctly. I one loss 5k at bellagio in 10 minutes and they had no record whatsoever.

from what I've read, it weighs the time played pretty heavily. So if you hit n run, even for big amounts you are prolly not getting the type of credit you would if you were to lose that same big amount over several hours.

Someone else can prolly clear this up and steer you in the right direction so you can maximize your degen-efits that casinos offer to you for gambling at their properties!

Its all about the time. They want you at the pits or the machines for as much time as possible. Average bet comes into play as well but it is really how many hours you log. The casinos' viewpoint is that their edge will come into play with the more hours that you put in.

Comps are kind of a racket...if you play to try to get comped you will lose more money in the end than if you just paid for whatever comps you are trying to get.

This is true on all accounts in my experience. I used to go to Vegas and just play low limits ($10-$15) a hand of blackjack and one trip I mostly sat around playing low limit slots several hours each day and lost a few hundred over the time of my trip. Now I play poker more or bet sports, but will sit down and play $25+ per hand of blackjack, but not put in as much volume. I can lose in 30 minutes more than I used to lose in 3 days, but I feel like I used to get better room rates and comps.

That's exactly right. And this is why MSchu continues to be a prolific poster . . .

I used to work for Ticketmaster, tons of tickets get stolen by little girls posting their Justin Beiber tickets to facebook

Make sure all your play is tracked by the pit boss everytime you sit down in the pits. Make sure your card is in the machine when you play slots. When you play poker make sure that play is tracked.

Develop a relationship with your casino host. Then ask for the moon. Keep asking for more and more. Ask for a suite. Ask for a cabana. Ask for tickets to a show. A helicopter trip to grand canyon with a picnic meal for you an gf. Ask for a shopping trip for your girl. Put everything on your hotel room bill, meals, massages, etc. Pay all tokes in cash directly...those do not get comped. Then at the end of your stay, your host will review your play and your bill and if you are deserving of being comped, they will take care of you because they want you to come back.

LOL. That's naive - just plain, no. They'll resell them multiple times to multiple suckers and not be anywhere near the event. All you end up with is 10 couples with the same tickets all describing different guys they bought them from on craigslist. Hi-res pictures and cheap, quality printers and some crude photoshop make for an effective scam.
