Hello there. I am starting this thread to gather ideas on how to move to Las Vegas cheaply and easily. This includes every aspect of moving to Las Vegas. From housing and jobs, to traveling and obtaining an address. I personally would like to make my way down there soon. I can't be the only person trying to move there! My personal situation is that I plan to leave my belongings in storage at a family member's house, which isn't much. I will bring what I need in a suitcase and backpack, then fly to Las Vegas, arriving without a vehicle. I don't plan on purchasing a vehicle right away when I get there, so it'll be walking, public trans, Uber, and maybe a bicycle. I plan on renting a room for a week at a time until I obtain employment. Then I'll look for a more permanent living situation. Any advice or suggestions would be appreciated.

It's not easy without a car to look around for rooms and housing. You can find an airbnb to start, but to be honest, it's going to be hard to look around for permanent housing and work without a mode of transportation. There are buses that go up and down the strip and to other major areas but you have to be lucky to find a job and also live on the same bus route. You're going to have to depend on Uber or Lyft to get around so that will ultimately depend on your budget to start out.

As Pure Aggression mentioned check out the LVL forum, there are some older threads about short term housing.

The Siegel Suites across from the Stratosphere is the best for access to bus lines, but you won't be walking distance from any good poker or much of anything else really if that is a concern. Harbor Island is walking distance from the airport if you're truly cheap and it's walking distance to the strip but inconvenient for taking the bus. Both can be reached by bus from the airport. Both are dumps in bad neighborhoods but you'll probably be fine for a week. I've stayed at HI many times without incident. Bring a queen size sheet and pillow with you if you can, most weekly rental places do not provide them.

Albertson's sells monthly bus passes. You can buy daily passes from the driver when you board.

I don’t know what your situation and education is, but the standard procedure for any kind of skilled labor is to apply for jobs before you move there.

If you are looking for anything that requires a college degree, there’s a decent chance potential employers pay for your travel to interview there and pay for relocation and provide temporary housing if you start working for them.

Fly in ... shuttle to Aria ... BI to JRB's game and start to network. JRB may even let you sleep on the couch if his wife is out of town!

What's your timetable? It may take a bit for this thread to get you more information.

Please don't trust Craigslist without first verifying as much as you can. There are scammers out there renting houses/apartments (and collecting Security Deposits) that they don't even have a key for! Some of the other sites are probably more reliable.

I agree with madlex ... try to scout the work situation a bit before you get there. It may help you determine where to look for a crib. Vegas is not an easy place to get around at times.

Bankroll/stakes played and 'minimum' time you going to give it a try? You can rent/lease a condo/room for anywhere from 1 week to 6 months if you give it a look.

We tend to worry about someone who is so focused on 'cheap' and 'easy' (and probably throw 'quick' in there as well) when it comes to chasing a poker dream. The last thing you want to be worried about at the table is making rent payment(s) the next day. GL

If you're looking for a cheap way to get to Vegas, a bus or train is going to be a lot cheaper than flying.

If you need a job immediately, you can go on different job search websites like indeed, craigslist, etc, select Las Vegas as the geographical location obviously and do searches with keywords like immediately, immediate, now, asap, right away.

Vegas on the cheap is not a pretty sight... secure a job before doing anything unless you like working service industry jobs.

Play semi professional for a few years... after that you'll have a better idea of what the life is like.

After a few years, if you actually last that long, I can almost guarantee you your outlook on poker will have changed.

It sounds like you don't have a plan or really anything going for you that would make this a good idea. I wanted to move to Vegas for years, but knew I wasn't ready. Find a job before you move here, get a car. As MSchu said, the lower budget side of Vegas is not pretty.

Find the cheapest place from which you can to rent the most basic car you can for two weeks or so..... midweek car rentals in the off season are cheap.

Las Vegas, for the neophyte, requires a car .... uber is ok for occasional very short hauls, but you will be both house hunting and job hunting..... you simply cannot cover enough ground with a bicycle, and if your feet are your only carriage, you will waste a lot of time.

My guess is that you don't want to hear something like this, but I really think that this is excellent advice.

More importantly, you have some sheetmetal around you. Both to partly cushion the impact of the inevitable moron running into you, and to scare off said morons enough not to run into you.

Ok dude here's my input... I moved here with minimal stuff 5 years ago. I grey hounded it from the east coast and I Fed Exed my **** via ground 3 big boxes and I timed it right I beat my **** here by 2 days total move cost plus me 320 dollars that's the bus ticket and Fed Ex ground. When I got here I already been google mapping the city so I already new my way around> No matter where you are in the city always Look for a reference point I always used the Statosphere and the strip if I ever got lost to find my way back but I never got lost. So the **** I had with me I pushed over to the plaza and took an airport shuttle to the airport to rent a car and I got one for 2 days and I slept in the car for two days and in those 2 days I searched craigslist for a roommate situation and I found one quickly on the third day Now I moved here already having money so it's easier for me then it might be for you unless you are bringing a life roll. Whatever you do don't listen to other posters telling you to get a Weekly I am telling you that you won't be happy I never lived in one nor would I. Get yourself a roommate situation and It will be safe and cheaper then a weekly situation at least until you found a job I been here 5 years and never need a car Public transporation worked great for me but I am ready to finally get a car now that my credit score is working in my favor. Also if and when you're ready get a job based on tips if you're a customer service type and are talkative you'll make money don't settle for a 10.00 an hour job!!


P.S. for free internet if you bring a laptop download Klink and you'll get free internet anywhere!!

I like the roommate option ... Just keep your mouth shut on 'most' of your situation to the roomie. You are 'always' broke and you 'always' break even at poker. If you bring home a new toy you got it from a guy who boosted it off some other guy. GL

Super cheap apartment rentals that are right across the street from the monorail and main bus routes. Just show up at their rental office with a cash deposit and they will set you up.

Well I'm kind of old and was at a low point in my life so I wasn't afraid for my personal safety. I was actually kind of hoping someone would **** with me so I'd have an excuse to unload my bad mojo on them.

But most people in that area are at a low point and they're just trying to get by.

- coming back from poker sessions in the wee hours, having to work my way through clusters of strangers hanging around, or of cops, to get to my door

- shopping at the Walmart there, to save money obv, being constantly accosted by extremely belligerent and desperate panhandlers. These aren't Strip types, hanging out flying a sign. These folks can't get to the Strip.

- continually seeing blood on the ground around my place

- worry about property crime both on my place and car

- hearing domestic fights among the neighbors all the time

- White Castle girl asking if I wanted a locals discount. I said sure, but I don't have proof where I live. She asked where. I told her, she said "eeew!" I said "right?" (that one was funny not negative)

- shortly after I bailed out of town, the first Vegas murder of 2016 happened at the place I was living

I am now back in California near my kids. I have a good job and live with my most excellent girlfriend who I met this year. My child support is crushing and I drive Uber to make bankroll money. GF encourages me to build the roll to the point poker becomes a legit side income. Life has improved considerably.

I kind of roll my eyes at my 'living in Vegas' time but, there is a YOLO element there too. Glad I survived, I mean, did it.

Edit: this was indeed a weekly and yeah. That's no way for a human being to live. I heard a joke about weeklies with pools. You want dead body floating, or cigarette butts? Butts pool costs extra.

I moved here in early 2017 after planning for almost a year. I have a professional background and education. I came here with a job which I know a lot of people don't have the privilege of. The housing market is booming here and we mistakenly used that as a way to gauge how the local economy is. It took my wife 4 months to find employment, she was applying to at least 20 jobs a week.

What I am getting at, unless you are a professional, ie doctor nurse attorney etc. jobs here can be very difficult to come by. Not trying to scare you away, just saying be prepared for a worst case scenario. I would highly recommend a local 702 number when you start applying as some employers are reluctant to higher new transplants.

couple things I ran into when moving out here not sure if were said earlier or not but anyway....

Many places to live apartments/houses will not accept you without proof of income/job. and if you are a "poker player" be prepared to put up many months of rent in full before hand.

Also like said before, jobs are extremely hard to come by that pay somewhat decent out here. if you have a professional trade even the employers looking for help pay ****. make sure you have a solid financial plan if things don't go the way they are planned. good luck

Just so you are aware, this is not the best part of town. It's not the worst, but it is definitely not what I would call nice. The problem with not having a car, a reliable source of income, and needing to play poker, is that you pretty much restrict yourself to places like this around the strip and in the downtown area. If you had a car, I'd suggest you should try to avoid the whole downtown/Strip area altogether. I work downtown and I have seen some ****, literally and figuratively. Unless you were in the condo that Andrew Neeme lives in (or something similar to higher in price), I can't think of any other place you'd want to live in that area.

If you wanted to do the weekly/monthly route instead of finding roommates, I think you'd be better off at Budget Suites by the Orleans. The people I got weed from who lived there were nice people. It's definitely still sketchy but seems less so than other options. And it's a short bus ride to the strip on Tropicana.
