Hi all

Finally heading to Vegas for the first time at the end of the month. I will play quite a few tourneys and cash and also try and get in the WSOP.

Just a question about the above, heard a few stories that it can be hard to get help in Vegas for an ITIN, so would like to get this sorted beforehand.

The UK has a tax treaty with the US. Brits need an ITIN otherwise 30% gets witheld.

Does anyone know if it is simply a case of getting an ITIN. Do I need to fill or have any other forms?

It might be just a case of getting an acceptance agent to proof my passport for an ITIN but was just checking if anyone is up to date with this.

Thanks

If you cash for $5000 over the buyin level and you don’t already have a TIN, the casino should apply for one for you.
This happened to me at Caesars. They did all the forms for me and paid me in full.
A few weeks later, once I got home, I received the official confiirmation of the number through the post. I now have that number written on a page of my passport so every time I have cashed since, I just show them that number.

There was an issue in the past where the WSOP cage weren’t doing the paperwork for players, but they are these days.

In short, you don’t need to do anything in advance, so long as you are using your UK passport as ID. To be safe though, make sure you have a UK bank statement with you that shows your UK address.

Most casino's dont do it anymore, this was the case in 2017.
They do at the Rio tho... works like a charm.

Ok. So I guess my choices are either to get this done prior to arriving in Vegas or just go straight to the Rio?

Pretty sure they don't just write you one up on request, but do so if you cash in a tournament there.

Just thought I would update this so people know.

I just spoke to somebody here in the UK who deals with these.

Regarding gambling, you can't simply apply for an ITIN and get one in advance. I would have to already have won money.

The exception would be if I had some sort of income already from within the US, e.g. a rental property.

I was told you could get issued with a 1042-S document after winning money and would then have to fill out a tax return and claim a refund for the 30% that gets witheld.

However, some casinos will help me out with an ITIN after winning, such as Rio.

Kind of sucks if I win in a casino who wouldn't want to help me get one and I didn't have one already.

Thanks for the replies all.

Pretty sure if you win at Wynn/PHo/Aria/Venetian, they will sort you out, as will the Rio.

Golden Nugget won't, as my friend found out a couple years ago.

People had trouble with that at the Rio in the past but I think they realized that international business is too important for the WSOP to not assist players with it.

I would strongly advocate doing the ITIN, otherwise it’s going to be a huge PITA to get your money back. If you cash at a place that isn’t willing to help you like GN, I’d delay going to the cashier until you have the matter resolved. Unless you need the money immediately.

I know from personal experience that both Caesars and the MGM sort it too

Was browing 2+2 for info regards ITIN for a Brit and stumbled across this. Hoping somebody can help. Hit a small progressive jackpot in the Linq today and was told as I was a UK resident it was subject to 30% tax.

I vaguely remember reading about this in the past and asked was there not a form that could be filled in to prevent this tax. They basically said they had never heard of this and essentially told me to GFY.

Anybody have any info on what I need to do to get this back? Here in Vegas for another week or so, is there anything I can do whilst out here or is it a case of waiting until I get back to the UK?

Any help would be appreciated, tried following info on other threads but was unsure.

Last year I got a jackpot at Harrahs for $4000, they did not have a tax agent working at the property so they could not do anything with the fact that I was Swedish and should pay $0 in tax. It was either lock the money and hope to hit a jackpot somewhere that gets me an ITIN or pay the tax.

I decided to pay the tax as I was a bit short on cash in general. Fast forward 2 days and I hit a $1300 hand pay at Venetian, ITIN was sorted within 15 minutes and I paid $0 tax!

I was part of a group of players that won a badbeat jackpot that was won at the Rio but also pays partnering casinos, I was in the Flamingo and all I had to do was fill in a form and show them my UK passport, and they paid me in full, no tax deductions.

Once you sorted the ITIN at the Venetian were you able to recover the tax paid at Harrahs?

It might be worth going to grease one of the poker room staff once everyone turns up for the tourney.

Or just punt their slots until you hit a handpay ($1,200)

No, that was a couple of days later and they sort the tax out online immediately unfortunately.

Top Tip:

When you get your official notification of your ITIN number through the post, write it in your passport
