What do you think of this one? I get into a hand with Negreanu and he’s to act first. On first draw, he says “two” but throws in three cards. IMO, this was a bit of an angle and to see if I am actually watching. The number of cards you draw in 2-7 greatly influences play each round.
Sounds like he was hypocritically "all loosey goosey, eating a sandwich".
...and maybe Matt Glantz was right about him angling.

Third break of the day and I have 26.7k. 393 entries so far and we have 222 left but late reg is open for another two hours. Next target is to survive until the end of registration.

Don't fight it. When I'm in Vegas (flying in from Asia) I just sleep when I'm tired, eat when I'm hungry, and play when I'm able.

If you're going to be jetlagged and up at strange hours, there's no place better in the world for that than Vegas.

Go get it Dunc. Don't worry about Negreanu or any of those, just play your own game.

52.6k at last break of the day. In the last couple of levels, I was battling with Robbie Campbell, Adam Owen and Nick Guagenti. Tough table but I ran well and hit many of my draws and eventually put drew Adam Owen to but him. He has been replaced by “Angry” John Monette who hasn’t been angry but has made sure the dealer is doing everything as he or she should be. (A couple of the dealers have not been perfect).

Next target is to survive the next two levels and bag and tag, just as Guitarist68 has done in the seniors event just now. Well played guitarist68!!

Btw, being outside by All American Dave’s during a break in one of these type of events - small field and pro heavy - is a great place to be for the poker fanboy! Recognisable name pros everywhere.

Blind increases will start putting people under a little more pressure soon so I’m expecting some more serious fluctuations.

In other news, Negreanu was very active early, and very chatty early, and as we are next to the rail, plenty people stop by to watch our table with him on it, as well as asking for photos. He was great with everyone other than Matusow who got a bit of the cold shoulder. He then went quiet for an hour when the basketball started as he was watching it on his iPad. He also played a lot less hands when the basketball was on

What do you think of this one? I get into a hand with Negreanu and he’s to act first. On first draw, he says “two” but throws in three cards. IMO, this was a bit of an angle and to see if I am actually watching. The number of cards you draw in 2-7 greatly influences play each round, so I did gently call it out on the next draw by saying “just looking to see how many you are ACTUALLY drawing rather than just listening to what you say”.

He also was involved in another 3 way pot when tightest player at the table bet and he said “oh, HE raised” pointing at the player. There was another player behind still to act and this is verging on influencing play IMO. Negreanu folded.

Thoughts? Reading too much into it??
No, I think you're right.

What an amazing day. For a recreational player like me, today was the reason I branched out from no limit hold’em. I was fed up getting monster hands cracked in huge field NLHE events and not being near any of the pros. I wanted to play against the best and my chances of playing against Federer at tennis or Tiger at golf or Messi at football have long since passed. But I still had a shot of doing that in poker and playing against the poker equivalent of those people.

During the course of the 10 hours of play, I won and lost pots against Sean Deeb, Daniel Negreanu, Adam Owen, Kane Kalas, Jon Turner, Matt Glantz, John Monette, Robbie Campbell and Nick Guagenti. It has been a very long, stressful and tense day but ultimately, a truly amazing one.

I have bagged and tagged 68.4k. That looks to be be good for twice the average stack and 8th in chips. Shame the WSOP doesn’t know the difference between Australia and Austria when it comes to the flags on their website!! We have 467 entrants and it looks like 139 left.

With one hour levels, my stack went like this...

Start. 10k
End level 1. 17.8k
End level 2. 17.1k
End level 3. 18.1k
End level 4. 22.0k
End level 5. 14.5k
End level 6. 26.7k
End level 7. 42.5k
End level 8. 52.6k
End level 9. 56.0k
End level 10. 68.4k

I could talk for hours about pots I played well, pots I played terribly (and there were a few horrible ones) and pots I got lucky in. But for now, I’m just delighted to be where I am after the day I have just had.

Tomorrow, the fight resumes at 2pm. More people will bust than survive so I’m realistic about my prospects but nonetheless very hopeful.

Finally, my tagged bag.....

I hereby transfer my next month of run good to Dunc.

Go get ‘em and thanks for keeping us informed even as you play deep into a tournament (not no worries if you decide you need to focus and refrain!)

Awesome Day 1!

Keep grinding, keep making lows, and remember that even though you're not the pro who's been here before, if you have a big stack around the bubble you get to push your weight around just like everyone else.

GL man!

Nice run, good luck...

Good points re 'playing with the pros' is more common in these kinds of events. While the financial EV is lower vs pros, the life/experience EV is certainly much higher.

Nice read, and while it's cool to be 'big blind' v Negreanu in the reporting, maybe today you'll get poker-famous with your actual name in those reports!

Thanks for the support and encouragement everyone. Obviously there is a long long way to go before there is any genuine cause for celebration, but it is great knowing there are some supporters out there!

With 139 left and only 71 making the money, we have to lose almost half the field before there is any financial reward for yesterday’s good run. Statistically speaking, that means I am 52% to cash, skill wise speaking, it means I am about 20% to cash, but chip wise speaking, I’m probably 65% to cash. I prefer the chipstack odds!

I have done some background snooping on the players I have been drawn to start day 2 with. My table draw is not at all interesting compared with yesterday’s pro-tastic tables I played at.

Seat 1. Sonny Dominique (Canada) 16,500
$11k live earnings
Seat 2. Jason Lipiner (USA) 34,600
$19k live earnings
Seat 3. Me (Austria The boys are back in town. A live TR from Donk Dunc and Watbri; 9th - 22nd June) 68,400
$37k live earnings
Seat 4. Alexander Freund (Austria) 52,100
$472k live earnings
Seat 5. Joshua Tieman (USA) 8,800
$985k live earnings, one WSOP bracelet, 4 final tables
Seat 6. James Hoeppner (USA) 14,000
$1.15M live earnings

Blinds 1000/1500 with 1500/3000 limits to start day 2 and play gets underway in just under two hours.

I’ll provide updates as and when I can.

Thanks again guys,
DD

I think today when it really counts you will be happy to have fewer names at your table. And it looks like the names you do have are on short stacks, so looks like a great draw.
