Golden Nugget is right across the street, as is Binions.

They're the only two downtown, and the Nugget is much livelier.

Binions is a shell of what it was.

Based on what others in this forum consider to be walking distance, Bellagio.

Why did you think this was worthy of its own thread? There’s a general questions thread and a low content thread that would have been perfect for this question without clogging up the giurm

The sad thing is 7-8 years ago, there were 5..Golden Nugget, Binions, Fitzgeralds, The Plaza, and the El Cortez.

Now there are 1 1/2..Binions poker REALLY sucks now..

Don't go into Binions unless you just want to look at tables. There are NO games running. Occasionally they might have a nightly kick off, but those are not worth playing unless push/fold is your thing from the very first hand...

Golden Nugget at least generally has a few good games going on.

It's probably better that all the action is consolidated at Golden Nugget, bigger rooms are more efficient. Glad they finally got new chairs, air quality seems a little better since they swapped the carpets.

it will run deeper than any 1/2 in vegas. they usually have several games going so if you are bothered by deep stacks at your table, just move.

I remember that as well and you may have left of the Freemont. Including the time when Binon's didn't have poker (except for the WSOP) but GN did and then, later, vice-versa.

It can, because there's no cap on the buy-in there even for 1/2. Sometimes the stacks look normal, sometimes one player ran his stack up and the next bunch of people to join the table buy in for $500 or $1k+ to go with the big stack. It's hit or miss though, I've seen a table of <$100 stacks playing the 'shove or fold' game for hours too. Change tables if you dislike your table's chip situation.

I don't remember the Fremont having poker, but the Four Queens sure did, back in the day.

Not only a decent-sized poker room, but they also hosted some really big tournaments series', as well.

A $5,000 No Limit buy in was BIG news back in 1996!

Fitzgeralds tiny poker room upstairs (near where the Sigma Derby is now) was where I had my first ever Royal..QdTd, and turned the ultimate nuts..

I don't understand Golden Nugget's strategy in having an uncapped 1/2 game. As the only room downtown, GN has has enough of a natural market share that they should be easily able to spread a regular 2/5 or higher game. But because of this rule, they never spread anything higher than 1/2.

Most 1/2 players don't want to buy in for more than $300 anyway, and much of the crowd that downtown attracts only buy-in for like $100. But with the uncapped buy-in, recreational players who want to play deep have no incentive to seek out a bigger game. So you end up playing in games where half the players have tiny stacks and one player is really deep. Which doesn't seem very satisfying to anyone.

My experience has been completely different. While I have been in games at GN where someone had a thousand or so in paper in addition to a decent chip stack, there has often been balance around the table. And, in the past three trips across the past month or so, I don't remember anyone who only bought in for $100.00...maybe night games are different, since my experience was typically prior to 10AM.

I sat at the Golden Nugget no max 1/2 game about 4-5 years ago and the Duke of Fremont had $50,000 in his stack..

having played with him you know that money is not in play, right? (yes technically it is in play, but he is the tightest nit to ever play-have seen him fold KK face up to to an $80 three bet in that game)

That said, I agree with Michelle, I have seldom seen the game with multiple stacks < $100, but like everything it depends I suppose. Generally I think its the best 1/2 in town by a long measure.

Bigger stakes aren't better, from the room's perspective. I don't think they should try to cultivate something higher than 1/2 unless it creates an additional table. Having a regular 2/5 game is bad if it leads to one less 1/2 table. On the other hand, the PLO table they get during the WSOP probably brings in players who wouldn't play NLHE.
