Best place for a family to live in Vegas? Best place for a family to live in Vegas?

I will be making the move to Las Vegas this summer. I have a temporary house set up as I’ll be dealing at the WSOP, but will be looking for a home to move into.

I have mediocre credit, a wife, and 2 young kids.

I’ve been looking in Henderson and Boulder City area, but am open to other areas as well.

The most important things to me are:

- A decent school system
- Affordability
- Safe neighborhoods.

I’m a traveling dealer for now and will continue to do so until I can find a house gig or two that will pay the bills in Vegas.

I don’t mind driving a good distance for work so being close to the strip/Vegas casinos is not necessarily important.

Preferably I’d like a house, and no more than $1.2 - $1.3k/mo in rent.

Any help and suggestions are appreciated.

You'll need to settle for less, or find a way to pay more - it's that simple

My suggestion is to land the permanent job before bringing your family to Las Vegas. Understand that virtually everyone who is being hired on for the WSOP is looking to do the same thing. You'll need to stand out, either with making good connections or outstanding dealing ability.

Good luck.

I’m not just randomly moving the family to Vegas to pursue dealing.

My wife loves Vegas (she’s not a gambler) and already has a job lined up there making decent money. If I don’t find a full-time job or even a couple part time gigs in Vegas, I can fall back on traveling to 1 event per month and we’ll be fine.

I’ve done a little bit of research, and my wife has done even more, but I figured I’d give this a shot seeing I can’t be the only married guy with young kids that will be living in Vegas.

I couldn't imagine moving my fam to LV; the city is just too infested with lowlifes, and not just on the strip. Good luck.

Fair enough.

There used to be a sign in locals joints here that read:

We don't care how they do it back "wherever the fu*k you came from".

OTOH, there are "something for nothing" lowlife, tweakers, and transients in many cities in this country. Don't think it's more prevalent off the Strip in good areas than elsewhere in the US.

Honesty, references and longevity are prime currency if you want to do well in this town.

Assuming mediocre only applies as a description of your credit and not the rest of the list...

there are a lot of great things about this town....the people is not one of them

if you have options don't raise kids here and stay away....

i'm trapped with my work (good income, not a lot of energy to get it) but think about getting out all the time.....but probably never will

I guess we’ll test the waters this summer as we’ll be out there without the kids for 7 weeks (they’re going to their grandparents for the summer). My wife is pretty dead set on moving their. I personally think Florida is the better option.

Maybe I’ll see some of you guys this summer.

Take a look at this

The first thing people do when they grow up in NV is leave this state.

You ever study statistics ? The article you linked does not say what you think it says at all.

Consider how many people move TO Nevada from out of State. Let's pretend that the population of the State doubles in a ten year period, but no one who was born there 10+ years ago leaves during that period.

Zero emigration, yet the % of native born residents drops by up to 50% perhaps.

The article explains the converse example of Louisiana:

"Part of the reason why Louisiana has such a high percentage of native-born Louisianians living in the state may be due to the fact that the state has poor retention rates when it comes to its out-of-state college graduates."

If distance from the strip is not an issue, then i would strongly suggest looking to rent a house on the SW part of town. Look into houses in the Mountains Edge community.
I have lived there for 6+ years and the neighborhoods and schools are great.

You can also easily find a 2 story, 2 car garage, 1700-2k Sqft house for rent in your mentioned budget range.

Hope that helps.

Thank you. Will definitely look into it. Distance to the strip is not an issue at all.

+1 to this. My neighbors house is for rent and exactly what you're looking for.

Yeah, you should add SW to your list for house-hunting.

Mountain's Edge is a relatively new development. I'll plead ignorance, but you should take SportBets at his word and give it a look.
