This should put the end to hopes of just arriving in town with no skills and finding work:

There are a ton of people here who were making incredibly good bank -- and living as such -- while working on the Strip before the economy tanked. Now that they are out of their jobs they have no chance of recouping their previous standard of living because they really have no job skills.

It's sad and reminds me a lot of the autoworkers in Michigan who get paid $30/hr to do something like bolt in door handles, but wouldn't be worth more than $10/hr if they had to find new non-union jobs.

Lets see what the most common jobs are for nevada high school graduates (dropouts)

1. coctail waitress
2. bartenders
3. valet
4. club promoter/doorman/ect
5. dealer (both kinds)

try doing one of those jobs for 8 years right out of high school, making 75k/year, then trying to live a normal life

hopefully those people applying can read, 'cause there's another article in the same paper:

CityCenter seeking more than 12,000 workers
MGM Mirage expects more than 100,000 applicants in down economy
By Liz Benston

Thu, Dec 18, 2008 (7:37 p.m.)

As employers nationwide shed workers amid the deepening recession, MGM Mirage will kick off the country's largest hiring spree Jan. 5 as it seeks more than 12,000 workers for its $9.2 billion CityCenter resort and other company-owned properties......
....About half of CityCenter's 12,000-plus employees will transfer from other MGM Mirage properties, with internal candidates getting a three-month head start over applicants from the general public. Managers expect to place qualified applicants into roughly 6,000 jobs vacated by incoming CityCenter workers throughout the company, McBeath said.

well citycenter isn't going to attract any new customers to las vegas beyond the initial month when it is introduced, it is just going to thin out the existing MGM brand, as the crowd that normally visits and does not leave the bellagio will simply move next door.

Encore, Citycenter, Cosmopolitan, Fontebleau (which is now stranded in the middle of nowhere), and a bunch of fancy condo towers are opening in the next 12 months, but all they are going to do is move a bunch of existing people around and improve the standard of living for residents and bang for the buck for tourists.

There will be a marginal increase in the number of employee hours worked on the strip but the total stagnation of the construction industry after the current projects are done will more than offset those.

15% unemployment in nevada by end of 2010 imo.

There may be 15% unemployment hit sometime between now and the end of 2010, but I'd wager (and will wager--gotta love the stock market) that the recovery will be long under way by the end of 2010. Probably started by the end of 2009.

You are certainly an optimistic fellow. It's possible things will have bottomed by the end of 2009, but a "recovery" in any meaningful way is a long way off, imo.

The primary reason being, the powers that be will not let things develop naturally. They are bailout junkies, which often just delays the inevitable.

Other than the casino/gambling business are there any other major industries in Las Vegas that provide the possibility of employment?

I mean all major metro areas need the standard:
Police
Firefighters
Nurses
Teachers
Doctors
Lawyers
ETC...

But is there any other job area that is prominent and growing in the Las Vegas area?

PS - Exremely cold days here in MN always get me thinking of moving to Vegas to teach as I used to do here.

A week or so ago, I think it was in the Sun, Nevada Jobs Connect on Maryland Pkwy had 900 job listings, and 76,000 unemployed in LV. It's pretty tough right now. As was said in yesterday's paper, when the time shares put on a hiring freeze, the economy totally sucks.

All your standards, minus lawyers, are pretty much what's needed out here.

You'll never go wrong with pretty much anything in the medical field, teachers are badly needed, and LVPD as well as Henderson are pretty much always hiring.

And to add to augie's response, fresh meat is always welcome.
