In N' Out burgers are great, just don't order them with that hideous radioactive spread.

The meat, cheese and vegetable toppings are so fresh and good, try one without any condiments..you will thank me later..

Day 6, the day Fedor shows off his cooking skills

After I listened to what happened yesterday at the Excalibur (“we both had big stacks, then we had 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, and a few more corona’s and then we ran out of chips”) I walk over to the Miracle Mile for some shopping. I can’t find anything decent, so the coming week I will try again at the Fashion Show Mall and the outlet center.

We are running low on groceries, but we still have the leftover pizza from Giordano’s. So, while I am away, Fedor is trying to heat up a slice. You must know, this guy has never cooked a day in his life, so he is stoked that he actually manages to get the microwave working. “It was like watching a monkey trying to operate a…. well… microwave”, according to Ropski.

In the afternoon I play the tournament in the Aria. After a bet and a raise, I go all-in with Q9 on a KT4 board. Neither the flush, nor the inside straight hits and the guy with KT wins.

I order a rum and coke at the cocktail bar in the Aria and after I have watched some Vegas Vlogs on my phone I head over to the craps table. I have only played craps a couple of times before and I never liked it, but after watching several videos on YouTube I am really looking forward to playing this. I will only play the “3-point molly with max odds” strategy to give the house as little edge as possible.

I win back my $140 poker tournament buy-in, cash out, head back to the cocktail bar to buy another cocktail (even though I could have ordered this drink for free at the table), have another go at the craps and donate back my hard-earned winnings from 15 minutes ago. Easy come, easy go.

Situation before the donation

Fedor and Ropski arrive at the Aria. We are in the mood for some steak, but it’s still early. Fedor wants to play here at the Aria and Ropski wants to buy some souvenirs and play in the MGM. I join Ropski and we agree to meet up at the outback steakhouse at 7.30.

Again, the game in the MGM is awful and we decide to cash out and head over to the Excalibur. While Ropski is playing 1-2, I decide to give this spread limit a go, pure for fun. Well, this is no fun at all, what a terrible game. I can’t believe I used to love the 5-10 Limit game back in the day in Holland.

Outback is good as always. Perfect value for money. Afterwards we head over to Bally’s to grind for another 3 hours. It’s Tuesday, the slowest night for poker and that is noticeable.

We really need alcohol. We can do a few things, but Fedor convinces us that our best option is to go to the Cromwell where they have a roulette table with only 1 zero and the minimum per spin is only $25. According to his calculations his strategy (bet a lot on 27 and also some on the adjacent numbers) only gives the house an edge of about 60 cts per spin. We agree to watch him and support him morally, while we keep ordering and drinking cocktails as quickly as possible.

Fedor and I keep ordering Vodka/Pineapples, Ropski is flirting with the good-looking waitress and she makes him a few surprise cocktails.

Now, in theory this strategy may only cost 60 cts per spin, but in reality, the 15 cocktails we ordered in total costed about $900…. Nuff said.
It’s late, we’re drunk, time for bed.

Day 7, the day a lyft driver explains there are casinos in Vegas.

It’s still early when Ropski and Fedor make their way to the supermarket.
The bread we bought the last time wasn’t that good, just an ordinary (stale) loaf of bread, so one of the items on the shopping list is decent bread. When they ask the personnel in the supermarket, they’re sent to the bakery just outside.

Ropski enters the bakery and asks for bread but the girl behind the counter looks at him as if he speaks Swahili. For some reason this bakery doesn’t sell bread. She advises him to try the supermarket instead.

They head back to the supermarket again, where a clerk tells them that a fresh batch of French bread has just been delivered.
Ropski walks up to the girl that is handling the crates and asks if he can have some bread. The girl, standing there with a crate of French bread in her hands, starts explaining that he should go to the bakery, just outside… sigh…
The clerk is probably used to her lack of intelligence and shouts to her that she should give Ropski the bread.

The lyft driver is very helpful and talkative. After some smalltalk about the differences between Holland and the US, the conversation comes to Vegas Knights and he asks if they did some sports betting.
Acting like the dumb tourists again they ask if you can bet on sports here. He starts to explain that every casino in Vegas has a sportsbook where you can place bets.
“Casinos?”
Without wondering if they are, a) aliens, b) completely stupid or c) fooling him, he now starts to explain that all those big buildings are casinos. In fact, the big green building close to the Wyndham is the MGM. A casino! Very interesting sir… thanks for the tip!

They bought salmon, lettuce, red onions and a lot more so we have a killer breakfast.

fully stocked fridge again

After our visit to the pool it’s time to take a shower. The splashing sound I make when I enter the bathroom is a bad sign. Our toilet is leaking and the entire floor is wet. I call the front desk and within a few minutes the plumber arrives. Props for the Wyndham for quickly taking care of this! It’s only the plunger and it’s an easy fix.

Ropski is not feeling 100% and is staying in while Fedor and I head to over Caesars. We play poker for a while but the main reason we went there is to watch game 3 of the Knights and Golden State vs Houston in the Sportsbook.

The lack of sleep is taking its toll and Fedor nods off. I think this is an excellent idea, so I completely miss the 2nd period as well.

After this power nap we’re hungry and decide to go to Holsteins in the Cosmopolitan for a burger and shake.

Still in the mood for poker we go next door to the Bellagio. When I sit down, someone who I played with in the Bally’s yesterday recognizes me. He jokes: “ah, the guy who constantly raises, time to get up”.
Funny how sometimes your own perspective of how you play is completely different from others. In my opinion I didn’t play aggressively at all, but in his book, I am a maniac.

Fedor is really tired and heads back home at 1am. I feel great and the table is also excellent.
When a seat opens, a drunk, but well-dressed guy sits next to me. Even his initials are embroidered on the sleeves of his shirt. He’s also quite talkative and I’m afraid he is going to be annoying but he turns out to be very funny. He doesn’t really care if he loses and whenever a big pot goes to his opponent he says things like, “my wife and my 4-year old thank you for stealing that pot from me”.
I stack him with 44 on a 34J9 board where he overbets the pot and goes AI for 250. I snap-call, river is a brick and I’m good (he had KJ).

After a nice session with a $550 profit I leave the Bellagio at 4am.

Day 8, the day we feel like we are in the Wild Wild West.

Fedor is determined to play in every poker room on The Strip this vacation so he is already off to The Mirage and the Wynn/Encore, driving the local OMC’s crazy.

Early birds

Ropski and I are working on our tan in the pool. Ropski is chatting up the blonde life guard (he obviously has a type) and asks her for any tips for a healthy lunch. Best that she can come up with are some joints at The Linq Promenade. We already checked those out a few days ago, so we text Fedor to meet us there.
At 2.30 we sit down at the Yard House. We want to order, but the waiter tells us it’s better to wait 30 minutes, since happy hour starts at 3.00. We only order some beers and when it’s finally 3.00 we also order several nice appetizers.

Fedor is going back to the Wyndham to chill and we decide to go to the Venetian. I am placed at a new table where a young drunk couple also sits down. She is obviously new to this game and he is telling her she should only play premium hands. He thinks he is whispering but the whole table can hear it. Also, they make the big mistake of buying in with 50-dollar bills. Don’t they know this brings bad luck?

The girl is not really listening to his advice and is playing a lot of hands. During most of these hands her boyfriend is talking to her. I really don’t mind, because I want happy drunk people at my table but of course there is always a sheriff in town. He starts arguing with them and telling them that this is against the rules, blah blah blah…. Next hand they cash out and leave.
I am not too happy with this guy, especially when he cracks my KK. Flop is Q high, he bets, I shove, he calls. He has AQ, A on the river.

After a few hours I am up about $200 and I try to find Ropski, but he has gone to the apartment too.
I decide to play in the Encore and walk via the Wynn to the poker room. It’s nice and spacious but for me it’s a bit too clinical. The game itself is ok, but I lose 1 buy-in after my flush is not high enough against the nut-flush. I put him on a straight but I was wrong.

former poker room turned into a shop

Just outside the poker room is a craps table, so I try my luck over there. The table is hot, so are the craps dealers and I win over $400.

The boys came over to the Encore as well and after some deliberation Fedor suggests going to Gilley’s. One of our plans this year is to hang out in more bars, so this night seems to be a good night to try some out. I only know it’s near TI so off we go.

After getting carded we enter a different dimension. We are now in ‘Murica! There is country-music, there is line-dancing, there even is a mechanical bull competition. Some girls are good looking and some girls are, what Ropski likes to call, 'wrecking balls'. I really don’t know what to think of this, but hey, they have beer, so we slam down a few cold ones.

getting ready for some serious line dancing

Not ready to call it a night yet, we head over to Caesars for another drink. It’s really crowded outside. Turns out the line to enter Omnia is so long, people actually have to wait outside the casino.

We sit down at a bar, order a few drinks, but before we know it, it’s last call already. I’m tired and I need some sleep so I take a cab to the Wyndham. Fedor and Ropski are not ready to call it a night though. More on that in the next installment.
