Checking out the bravo poker app and it looks like red rock has a bunch of 1/2 running and a 20 hr play promo for $100

I always wanted to check out the golden nugget but obviously don't want to play with a bunch of old nits (I've never played there but it looks cool old vegas n all)

Checked out the wynn last weekend and got clobbered mostly due to bad play on my part so now looking for a "soft" place to lick my wounds

Where do ya'all recommend for some 1/2 action?

Green Valley Ranch or MGM. The former has the same promo, so geography may be a deciding factor .... good luck.

If you want someone to lick your wounds however, try the Mirage sportsbook bar or the casino floor bar at the V.

$1/$2 at the Red Rock can be decent on weekends at night

avoid during the day, it's all OMCs

Golden Nugget is not a nitty game. It's often the best $1/2 in Vegas.

As the only real game downtown, it gets a lot of tourists, and they tend to be, shall we say, less sophisticated than the average strip tourists. Also, the buy-in is uncapped.

correct me if im wrong but it seems like a small room only couple tables of 1/2 going during peak hours

I also typically buy in for 100 bigs so definitely don't want to get smacked around by the big stacks

on the other hand something really infatuates me about playing there and for sure on my bucket list

Golden Nugget is great if you want an alternative to play poker during the day. Most OMCs rarely raise and they play fit-or-fold which is easy. At all tables I've played I've had a mix of OMCs, locals, tourists acting like thinking players, and a gambler. Disclaimer: I've only played there during WSOP so your play may vary now. Also, get the tacos al pastor and the Connie Island dogs in the nearby places while downtown.

You know that only effective stack matter in cash right? You're playing for 100BBs if that's all you have, even if the other guy has a million.

I haven't played there since 2016, but it was much busier than that during peak hours when I was last downtown. 4-5-ish tables of 1/2NL, 3-4-ish of some limit game (4/8?) and intermittently one of 2/5NL is what I recall as pretty normal during peak times.

Golden Nugget on weekends seems to always have a mix of regulars, pro's, off duty dealers and drunken tourists. I don't like to be crammed into such a small room but the games have been above average when I play there.

I only played once at the Golden Nugget (last summer), but it was by far the best game of that trip. I sat in the seat The Duke just vacated, so I didn't get to play with him. There were lots of terrible players along with a few sharks.

I found this thread while searching for The Duke's character name:

lol, no

lots of retirees in the area with nothing else to do during the day.

and some of these are refugees from the nearby suncoast poker room which closed not too long ago (in old people years) which only adds to the player list

A decade ago I got to play with The Duke many times in GN, Plaza, Binion’s, back when poker rooms were all over downtown. I remember one time he sat down wearing T-shirt and shorts and I was like WTF. 1/2 this weekend in Vegas

“Bigger room = better games” is one of the biggest misconceptions about live poker.

Played at GN 2 weeks ago on a Friday night for the first time. 1/3 game and the old drunk dude next to me was sitting with $2800. One of the sickest games I have played in a long time, although unfortunately did not book any proift. But yeah, well worth a visit. Only downside is that I went home with a horrible headache due to all the smoke in the room/casino.

Haha, I feel like the smoke headache is a staple of downtown in general! IIRC, I always remembered GN as a 1/2 game? Did they have 1/2 and 1/3 both running?

The games when I play anywhere are always above average because I play below average.

Costa Rica's 2,000 CRC note is literally fish money.

Staying at Four Queens for 4 nights in early May, for about 40% of the rate for a somewhat comparable room at the Nugget. Room includes in room coffee and refrigerator which is the final convincer. Plan on putting in significant play at the Nugget, but will be renting a vehicle to tour and visit other rooms. Appears that the Venetian has the best action for 1/3 NL. Want to avoid the rooms that reward the locals for showing up.
I appreciate the comments on poker at the Nugget and would be interested in any recommendations for good 1/2 or 1/3 NL games in any other casinos.

Thanks all,
-jjb

As for Venetian, both yes and no. They might have the most number of 1/3 tables, but the players are horrible (unless it has drastically changed which I doubt). They have the same ongoing promo every quarter where they will either give $500-$1000 for a high hand or a bomb pot, and 80% of the field are just short stacking old nits. It is extremely hard to get a good table.
