wish i had read this thread before buying 5% of a 35 HSMTT package @ 25% markup on a -13% ROI player :-\

clearly i'm an idiot for not doing research beforehand or noticing the markup but there was so much demand i just assumed it was profitable.

oops

So staking... you're pretty much taking the player's word for it that they will pay up if they win?
02-12-2010 , 04:11 PM
yup
02-20-2010 , 04:12 PM
can anybody weigh in on the discussion of tax responsibility?

for example, i pursue staking in the sunday $4 mil, 50% of my action gets bought up and i bink it for $1mil. Obviously such a large score will be unavoidable from a personal tax standpoint. If i have to pay 25% on the winnings, this reduces my take to $750k, not including the staking arrangement.

Now considering the staker, who i owe half the 1 mil, or 500k. I've paid taxes on the full mil, distributed half the winnings pre uncle sam, and i'm left with 250k after my hooj donkament bink....what is my staker's tax obligation? is it standard for the staker to accept half the profits after taxes?..seems cloudy.

looking for someone to guide me thru the hypothetical scenario. Is the mark up understood as the player's juice for tax purposes or the mark up is for the increased likelihood of an itm finish from the better players?

you are staked for 50% of the mtt.

you "win" 1 million in the mtt, but you only had action on 50% of that. so you really only won 500k.

you are only taxed on 500k and your stakers gotta deal with being taxed on the other 500k.

YOU ARE ONLY TAXED ON WHAT YOU ACTUALLY PROFIT.

Probably the most standard of questions but in case I ever do this, I don't want to cause any problems:

Is it OK to sell action on tournaments that you have sattelited into? I don't see why it wouldn't be but I could see people arguing that it is unfair because you took less risk or something (like if you sell 50% of a $200 tournament that you got into for $8, you are basically guaranteed profit...this is what I mean). Thank you, so glad that I just found this forum!

100% standard to sell any action to any mtt.

just cause you got in for cheap, doesnt mean you should be penalized for it. the potential backer didnt risk any of that 8$ to get into the 200$ mtt in the first place.

there are a ton of people who satellite into the WSOP ME and than end up selling off a ton. Once you win the satellite its like you effectively won that cash, but its gotta be used for a mtt buy in. you are entitled to do anything you please with any satellite you win.

For the WSOP say you bink, don't they withold right there? Do you just tell them you only own part of what you won?

Say you bink 1M, 300K gets witheld, you have to pay out 600K, since you sold 60%, do you get to only keep 100K and just get a big refund next April, is this how it works?

Hey All,

I'm fairly new to the online poker world (tried it a few years ago without a great deal of success.) I went back to live games and have improved greatly. I don't really have any references or history for my online play, but this is why I'm starting out with low buy-in packages.

I will be offering a package of 10 SnG's on Poker Stars. Buy-ins are $3 to .4 with no mark up = $3.40 * 10 = $34 total for all buyins. I am looking to sell 50-70% and I will buy the rest.

Shares must be sold in a minimum of 10% for this event.

10% - 3.4
20% - 6.8
30% - 10.2

etc.

Games will start as soon as I have 50% investors.

send to Mauer88 location: minneapolis on Stars.

Thank you for considering my intro package as I look to build myself up in the online poker community.

PM me for any other details..

Email
phone number, other personal may be exchanged to investors.

Hi, I am new here and would like to get staked. I have good mtt results, and am wondering if I need more posts or time here before I can start a new thread.
Thanks!

Would to say, "Selling 50% of my action" Be the same as saying "You stake me and we'll split 50/50"?

Nope.

"Selling 50% of my action" means the player pays for 50% of the buy-ins themselves and sells off the other 50% to backers (with profits split 50/50). In deals like this, a mark-up can be charged on the shares that are being sold.

"You stake me and we'll split 50/50" means the backers pay for 100% of the buy-ins (and the profits are split 50/50).

might be good to post in this thread...

not sure if the mods will be in favor of something like that, the big changes happened not too long ago. though it may indeed help the situation.

Suggestions on how to sell pieces of me late in tournament with big chip lead going into day 2? I have 617K which ends up being twice what 4th currently has with 43 players remaining. Blinds are 2500/5K w/400 ante. Top 15 get paid and 1st takes down $8500. I'am only doing this deal with friends I now personally, but want some suggestions on how to go about doing this. I want to be clear I have never done something like this and would appreciate some knowledge on the matter.

Before you consider anything else this must be your primary concern. You don’t want someone running with your money and not playing! The player should be able to provide one or two solid references. Normally post count or date of joining 2+2 will give you a good indication BUT don’t use these facts alone!
how should i get anybody to give me references? i dont know nobody here and my friends dont use this forum. how can i prove that im trustworthy in the first place?

i would say with smaller packages and no mark up.

You will find probably buyers then and start to biuld up a reputation

Definitely this is the way to go. You will find that if you treat people fairly and give good updates and results you will find the same people continually back you for larger and larger buy ins. GL to you.

agreed, I think markup should be more of a privelage people earn through reputation as well as results and not something people expect to get right away; I think it should be somewhat standard for first time posters to have no markup.
