Looking to get back into MTTSNGs for fun and side-income Looking to get back into MTTSNGs for fun and side-income

Hi 2+2,

I am looking for training material on MTTSNGs for micro/small stakes.

Both the RIO and UpSwing poker courses are WAY above my bankroll.
The best I've done in this format (years ago) was play turbo MTTSNGs and be slight winner by playing ABC (mega freaking tight) poker. Do have in mind that this was mid 2016.

Right now I am considering either going for BPC SharkAcademy for MTTs or starting the MTT University of Tournament Poker Edge as those are a lot more affordable for me.
What is your opinion on those, 2+2? Also, any other suggestions? Good books, articles, tools (I know of Piosolver and Equilab, but currently have no idea how to use them or what to actually use them for)?

The reason I am looking for MTTSNGs in particular is time constraints due to my full-time job, which I will happily quit if I can make $5000+/month playing poker alone, but that's not viable at least in the next year or 2 to be realistic...

Cheers,
Wisher

Wisher, did you graduate college? If not, do you have tangible employment skills such as welding or being a carpenter?

The reason why I'm asking is that if you can earn 5k a month without any benefits today, that number will likely be the same or more likely much lower in 5 years time.

5k a month plus health instance, paid leave and upward mobility is a pretty standard middle class job these days. Even if that's appealing now, it won't be as you get older. Especially the time off, matching 401ks and other benefits like healthcare. That 60k plus benefits in an office > 100k at the felt.

Unless your employment options are working at Walgreens or a toll booth operator then abandoning your career for 60k a year at the tables is a horrible idea.

Nearly every 2+2er who earns a living at the felt stopped doing it or manages to earn less now than they did 5 years ago. You'd be hard pressed to find any traditionally employed 2+2er that earns less than they did 5 years ago.

Then you gotta factor in nobody wants to employ a poker player. You'll have an unwanted gap in your resume that's a huge red flag. But just that, you'll find yourself too old to be considered for the junior positions and not experienced enough for the senior ones. This is a career killer.

Take it from someone who was a pro and now does everything in their power to hide that fact now that they are out in the real world. Don't for one second consider poker for a living unless it's significantly better than your non poker options. 5k a month isn't that.

Yeah, sorry, forgot to mention that I am not in the US and those $5k are after taxes, additional medical insurance (we have free health-care), etc.
Additional info: I have graduated university and work in IT. I said that I will happily quit if I make $5k+/month... emphasis was on the *plus* part. So, mostly I am looking to get back into poker for turning it into a side-hustle, rather than full-blown job.

Also, read this, a sobering outlook on the road to mtt/sng career. You can be one of the best mtt players in the world and still have a losing year despite massive volume a huge chunk of the time. Unless you're in a syndicate of other highly talented mtt players where you are all pooling your money to avoid those swings... it's a brutal existence.

Say what you want about Negreneau and his talent (or lack of talent), but he's going to have his 3rd consecutive losing year in the live mtt circuit and this is someone who used to steamroll the weak competition and one of the all time highest live cash totals.

The game gets harder each year and the variance is a horrible. There's nothing worse than winning 50k in 2 weeks and then slowly bleeding 30k over the next months. Without ramen noodle diets and very careful bankroll discipline, you can easily be a good player and go broke because you bought a motorcycle after that 50k upswing and couldn't survive the downswing until you binked another.

That's a very cool blog entry.

Did someone do the same thing for cash games?
