I'm at the final table of a tournament, a guy is playing with a huge chip stack, just abusing the entire table, basically steam rolls the table ala Jamie Gold. He ends up winning the tournament easily. I search for him on Official Poker Rankings, and his recent results are amazing.

The guy is a losing player over the course of his play, but this past weekend he has finished: 1/1173, 2/1487, 47/1105, 8/158, 12/145, 6/367, 6/159 for scores of $2,269, $4,854, $27 (ok, maybe this one doesn't belong), $555, $278, $3,250, and $450. Last weekend, he finished 50/3057 for $1,388.

I've never been suspicious of online poker, and I'm not saying this guy is cheating, but is a hot streak like this actually possible? It seems like a person would have better odds at winning Powerball than making it that deep in so many fields in the span of a single weekend. Something about it seems off to me. In the two years listed on OPR prior to this hot streak, he only had 3 scores > $1,000 which were $1,275, $2,365, and $1,012.

Rather than publicly accusing someone of being a thief, it would seem like a good idea to report your concerns to the site involved.

Either:

1) The accused may be innocent. Slander is bad.

or

2) The accused may be guilty. Letting the guilty know they are under investigation is bad.

Back in January, I won 20 straight Sit n Gos. I don't know that I'll -ever- be able to repeat that performance again (especially considering I don't think I've won a single one since February)

Wow, OP, this is one of the most offensive posts I've ever seen. A guy goes on a heater over a few weeks, and you accuse him (even just hinting) that he's cheating?

Looking at the OPR listing you linked, he started playing in Oct 2006. So we're talking about a year and a half's worth of data, in which time he's got a bunch of decent scores, including a bunch of them recently. Looks like a heater to me, nothing suspicious.

I haven't had a 4 figure score since late 2006 - so if I get on a heater and FT two tourneys this weekend I'm cheating?

Weak argument - imo you owe somebody an apology.

Serious question, can you see how many other tourneys he played over this hot streak? If not, maybe he's just played a ton recently?

Statistical abnormalities happen. I once got 26 wagers in a row correct in 98. Maybe the NFL and I were colluding. The results are not even impressive. The guy finished in the top 10 in a 3 tournaments with 150 people in them came 12th in one with 350 and top 2 in two 1000+ player tournaments. The last stat is the only one I find slightly odd but the sample size is 2 which is hardly significant. When you look at the prizes it is pretty clear these were tournaments with very low entry fees. I don't play tournaments but people who play $1 to $5 tournaments tend to really suck so I'd expect someone who has been playing for 3 years to do well.

So in other words, you just described the exact kind of player that this kind of variance could happen to. An aggro player getting cards can win any tourney. This isn't even weird, he has just been running good.

EDIT: WTF, he played a ton of tourneys too. He cashed in less than 30% of his tourneys during that time. Ridiculous post.

"******edness"?... your failure to correctly turn ******ed into a noun casts a foul shadow of ******ation over an otherwise effective zing.

Looking at the link I see that there are a lot of other results that are less spectacular.
If I play a zillion tourneys then it's pretty likely I'm going to do well in some of them.
And the tourneys that I do happen to do well in aren't likely to be spaced out evenly. I'm going to run hot at some point and run super-cold at others.

Anyway, instead of just cherry-picking his very best results and almost implying that he didn't have any bad finishes in there too I think it's fair to post ALL of his tourney results on the weekend in question.
