Re: Daylight Savings Time (DST), I'm excited that I'm dorky enough to know the answer.
Euro/North American DST used to begin on a similar date; not identical, but only a difference of like a week.
A few years ago, the US changed its DST so that it started earlier in March and ended later in the year into November, in order to lower energy usage and bills; the expanded DST period made it so that natural sunlight would be used in buildings during the times when people are awake.
Once the US passed legislation to change DST, Canada followed.
