You're right they are not mutually exclusive but describing this story as amazing is disingenuous . It reminds me of a local news story that occurred last year where a mother of three would drive to the local Indian casino nightly and leave her young children locked in the car whilst she played slots . Eventually she was busted for it and lost custody of her kids as well as being permanently barred from the casino. The TV news station which covered the story reported it tastefully with appropriate gravitas and not 'oh wow you gotta hear this amazing story So amazing that we are repeating it from three years ago cos we know you wouldn't want to miss this' !!!

It is a sad truth that many people have serious gambling problems and lose control of their own lives as well as hurting the people closest to them. I was disappointed that the Pokercast presented this story so glibly especially now when those with an anti poker agenda are using problem gambling more and more as a reason not allowing online poker.

Ah, so you were reacting not so much to the story itself but to the "check this out" way it was pitched. Fair point.

Loved the live tournament segment. Especially how - from the sound of it - Ryan started out recording in the middle of a McCarran runway

Very intriguing segment though. As others have said, most of us won't find ourselves in a $10K, sitting across from with the Unabomber. I didn't know the results of the event beforehand, so I kept hoping he would final table it. It was like a little poker version of the "Serial" podcast.

Also, as a recovering degen, I LOVED the blackjack story. I think most of us can relate to these types of stories, even if its not on the same monetary level.

It's a funny story to me because I know Mohammed pretty well and was around the casinos for a lot of his adventures.

Mo would have had zero no matter what happened, much like Archie Karas. It's never enough. So if you realize that's the case, that every wild ride ends at zero then looking at the ride is amusing. How high did he take it this time?

Mo's a nice guy too. No ego really that I remember, just absolutely loved the gamble. Could play poker with the best of them.

The pre tourney stuff was really bad and redundant, but once he got into the tourney and had actual hand histories and opponents to discuss, it was much better and enjoyable.

Adam, not sure if this is some inside joke between you and your friends, but if not, it is Oriented, not Orientated.

Results Oriented. Repeat after me. Results Oriented. NEVER AGAIN SAY ORIENTATED.

Thank you.

By any chance, do you work with someone that calls OOP/D "Object Orientated Programming/Development"
01-15-2015 , 12:27 PM
No I do not. At least not that I've heard of.

I'm an OOProgrammer and never heard orientated.
01-15-2015 , 06:17 PM
orientated appears to be my machete
01-15-2015 , 06:20 PM
I'm going to say it's very Canadian, but very wrong.

Adam is hardly the first person I've heard saying "orientated" but it's always a poker person. I first noticed the term at PokerRoad, where it was probably a 60/40 split between oriented vs. orientated.

I'll further admit thinking that it was something that had become part of the online poker lexicon, not unlike the phrase "running good," the spelling "moran" or the insistence of putting an apostrophe in the plural word "pro's."

(However, I still don't know if poker people intentionally misspell the word by writing "rediculous" instead of "ridiculous," or if it's simply a very common mistake.)

I think I've heard it most often in this sense, "Once you get yourself orientated." In fact, I don't think I would ever use oriented in that phrase. Which appears to be accepted. "Cheifly Brit."

But never after results.

It's kind of a good interview screener.

Ah!
01-17-2015 , 06:03 AM
I don't use oriented nor orientated. I use Asian.

Thot episode was very good and interesting. Also shorter...maybe why I liked it and hand discussion was interesting. I know it'd be tuff to get in the studio twice a week. Maybe break show into 2-90 minute segments. Not fun waiting a whole week for next episode.
