Pokercast Episode 337 - Issac Haxton and Norman Chad

This week on the Pokercast, Adam and Terrence are joined by Pokerstars Team Online member Issac Haxton. Ike tells us what a typical poker playing day is, his view on some of the drugs that some poker players are taking to help with concentration and he answers some vague speculation that Daniel Cates made against him. Ike then breaks down all streets of a big hand he played online against Doug Polk and Wilhasha and lastly he plays stripper trivia with Adam and Terrence. ESPN's Norman Chad also drops by to talk about the WSOP coverage so far this year, as well as his thoughts on poker television in general. Norman has been telling the world on the coverage all the crazy things he's going to do if Mark Newhouse makes the November 9 again, but reveals to us the one he is actually prepared to do. He is also happy to play stripper trivia with the guys. In the first segment, Adam and Terrence discuss this week's WSOP coverage, including a couple of the hands and Dan Smith's calling of the clock. The guys also wrap up the recently completed WSOP APAC and comment on FTP dropping Gus Hansen and Viktor Blom. Last but not least, the password for the October 26th Pokerstars Invitational for Pokercast Listeners is given out.

It was a bit weird to hear Terrence rant about planes not getting any faster. I was thinking "has he never heard of the sound barrier, and Concorde"?
The sound barrier is really quite hard to break, and Concorde did make a lot of difference (2.5 hours vs 6 hours or so for London-NYC).

Also, planes last a lot longer than cars -- the Boeing 747 was introduced in the early 70s and it's still going strong. They have no doubt improved the motors a lot and the aerodynamics a bit in the meantime, but that's all low percentage points improvements.

Coolest version ever of the 747 was a version they were going to build instead of B1 bomber. Would have carried like 200 Tomahawks.

If you're going to record voices, please don't let the levels drop so listeners have to turn up the volume to hear it only to have a meaningless drop come in at a much louder volume level.

I haven't been crazy about the show since MJ left. I like some of the changes and others not so much, and that's going to happen with various listeners. I understand that you're adjusting but the sound engineering has really gone downhill. The drops and discussions of them and other "we're making this change and its good because..." discussions have to go in my opinion. The drops are hardly relevant and the sources are inaudible more often than not. As far as the 'adult' language discussion goes, my feeling is if people are listening because you use those words they aren't worth catering to. My vote is drop the language. Its a couple hours a week and if you can't manage without it just use it, drop the discussion of it, and lose the listeners who are offended by it.

Really great show this week. And as one who usually bitches about the sound quality, I have to respectfully disagree with cf410. The sound quality and levels were perfect this week, the interviews were clear. ( Ok, maybe remember to turn of the call waiting next time...) The drops still need a little work so that they feel organic, but its getting better. ( I loved the " ohhh **** ya bud" covering the phone number.)

Ike was great as always, and I have to say that I found Norman to be very witty and funny. I personally love him on the ESPN WSOP coverage, but I figured a lot of that could be attributed to writing and editing, but he was quick, witty and funny off the cuff.

You mentioned that an emailer asked for a segment about a day in the life of Adam, I would like to +1 that. I am curious about your poker career, both past and present. I have been listening for about a year and a half, and I realised that I really don't know much about your poker career. Stuff like, do you play full time? Do you make your living from poker? Live or online? So an about Adam segment would be cool. I would also love a Ross segment, all about him!! ( I only say that because I know he frequents these threads, didn't want to leave him out!)

Thanks for the great show guys!

Thank you Adam, Terrance and Ross. Another fun show.

Right now I'm 50/50 on the drops. I like them because it's a fun way for Ross to contribute to the show. But some of the drops themselves are a little iffy. They are either hard to make out or don't quite fit in.

But trial and error, I guess. ESPN's Fantasy Focus does a great job of using drops. Plus, they create drops for each segment. Maybe that's something Ross can create.

One thing I wouldn't do is add the drops when guests are on. The guests seem confused and throws off their rhythm.

Get new trivia questions each week. (BTW: Don't forget Albania)

Really appreciated when TChan added links to the show thread. IE Wired Magazine, Million dollar pot interrupts dinner.

It's great when you bring Mike on show. It sort like when a former SNL member comes back on.

Keep on truckin

If there's content that Adam or I alluded to this week that require some linkage, please let us know. I try to take notes during the show, but sometimes talking and writing at the same time is not my strong suit. Hell, I already forgot about what the hell we talked about this week.

Drops were definitely a lot better this week, Ross is clearly developing better timing. I agree with not doing them when guests are talking, except for the "Correct" Antonius drop. Still, dosing is important for these -- they should be used fairly sparingly IMO.

He is a stand up comedian and MMA commentator. He also has one of the biggest podcasts out there. It's called the Joe Rogan Experience. (Was on Newsradio and host of Fear Factor back in the day) The show is about 3 hours long. If you like deep conversations, about things you won't see in mainstream media, Rogan is worth a listen.

His site is joerogan.net but you can find the podcasts on youtube, vimeo and live on ustream

You better bring it in Macau! lol

Did someone lose their job over the Jaffey incident? Norms anger over Jon "screwing around with the information process" seemed to be disproportional to the crime.

Were there a couple of legal edits in that interview around 2:01:05 to 2:01:20?

The beeping was someone trying to call the studio during the interview. Call waiting.
