You guys are just used to hockey interviews where you ask the answer, then the question, and then lead the subject a little more. Boston is just born to live free.

Just happened to be on the site today and decided to leave a fan-boy post. I regularly grind while I listen to the Pokercast, but the heater you guys have been on is amazing. Negreanu, Ivey, Greenstein, Boston, and upcoming Galfond. That is just amazing! Keep it coming gentlemen, you are the outstanding poker media available today.

Mason and Pokerstars should be proud.

I really get the feeling that Boston likes talking poker and doesn't like talking basketball as much, which is why he ignored the sleeper question and started talking about a poker hand. Especially this time of the year when he is on other shows it sounds like, talking 100% basketball.

That's not just hockey. Sports interviews (and others) in general have gone to that. I find myself doing it when I interview my coaches and athletes. This was more or less what I sounded like when I sat down with our water polo coach on Tuesday:

"Coach, you're coming off a very competitive game against Indiana. And although the outcome didn't go your way, your team showed a lot of positives – you converted power plays, you picked up numerous counterattack opportunities, your centers continue to pose a threat at two meters. The Hoosiers are similar in strength and style with the teams in your conference, and you scheduled this game with that in mind, so how much of an indicator did last weekend provide for your team as it heads into conference play?"

Pitcher-turned-broadcaster Don Drysdale was notorious for not asking an actual question when he interviewed a subject. He'd just talk for 30 seconds, pretty much answering the question he's supposed to ask. Then he'd stop talking long enough to allow his subject parrot what he just said.

It is the modern way, I guess. Here I love our hockey broadcasters, but your example would be a standard question in any post-game interview. Boston doesn't work like that. You say, "So, basketball" and then sit back and enjoy the ride. They should have him on like 4 times a year.

You have no idea what he'd even talk about. That's the wonderful part.

Exactly. You say "so, basketball" and he will talk about poker anyway!

Once a year when you actually try to get him to talk basketball (before March Madness ldo) and once when you just set him free.

get boston on again to talk about the good old days in the wsop and the problems with the wsop today.

He seems passionate about that topic, eager to be on again soon and I would love to hear from him about it even if I didn't agree with what he said.

Get him on at the start of May for this please.

Will cross post in suggest a guest thread

Yeah, second this. Sure, there are probably many who could sound off on this subject, but Boston would be the funniest and the most candid.

If anyone has seen the movie Wayne's World, you'll remember the scene when the guys do their first show under producer Benjamin (Rob Lowe). Their regular theme song is replaced by a slickly produced version with professional singers doing the "Wayne's World... Wayne's World... party time... excellent" lyrics. Their logo is now a glossy, neon-lit replica of itself.

When the old-guard players first walked into the Rio at the first WSOP after the Harrah's buyout (2007), I imagine it resembled that scene. For every guy like Hellmuth, who probably embraced the new era because of the added marketing possibilities, there were probably a dozen like Boston, who missed the character and quaintness of Binion's.

FYP. First WSOP at the Rio was 2005.

Bah, I was about to point that out. I was there playing sattys before the first event even started. One of the first to ever play in the Rio without ever playing at Binions.

Oh duh... yeah, I should have known that. They made a big deal about playing the ME final table at Binion's one last time in ’05, something Joe Hachem has spoken about on a few occasions.
